Stoney Ridge
Ranked #5 of 6 Bradwell B&B and Inns
Reviewed 28 January 2009

We stayed for 2 nights in Jan 2009. We enjoyed a special rate of £85 for the stay. Our room was pleasant with a view of the garden, and the bed was very comfortable. Corner bath was nice as so many B and B's now only have showers, there was complimentary bubble bath, shampoo and conditioner - but the hand soap did not smell nice at all! Although the pool was actually shut as it was not heated we were welcome to use it, so we did, thinking it would be no colder than the sea....... it was very cold so we only used it once, but it was nice to be offered the chance - the pool room was very nice and relaxing though. Lovely chickens roaming freely in the garden! The breakfast was nice, with a choice of fruit, yoghurts, cereals etc, and a cooked meal.
Altogether a very pleasant stay.

This B&B is a large bungalow property, with large and peaceful gardens to the front and rear, up a minor road in the pleasant village of Bradwell. So if you like a quiet and peaceful setting, this could be for you.

Positives :

1. Peaceful setting and good base for Castleton, Hope Valley etc
2. Friendly-enough proprieters ; not intrusive but happy to help
3. Although decor of property is dated, the property is clean and tidy
4. Comfortable shared living-room with balcony to hillside views
5. A swimming pool ! Not huge, but I enjoyed using it and had it to myself before breakfast (indoor and heated)
6. Breakfast was fine, and prompt service by owner

Negatives :

1. Large bed is very important to myself and my wife as we are both tall, and checked before-hand that our room was King Size bed. They assured me "yes" - but it was in fact a Queen Size bed.
2. Our room had a corner bath (small !) and no shower - although we could the shower-room by the swimming pool. Not ideal as you have to walk through whole property to get there ; but I did not have any problems
3. Woken up about 4am by the cockerel and hens they keep, in back garden just outside our window ! Countryside is not always "peaceful" you know !
4. Swimming pool has limited times when it is available to use, and you have to mention to owner you wish to use it.

Overall, this B&B was "good" (nothing more) but I was a bit disappointed that it did not quite live up to my expectations from their website. If I was the owner, I would re-decorate the whole property as furniture etc is dated, and our room was cluttered with ornaments. Also, our room was slightly "dark" - redecorated would lighten it up.

Overall, I would score this B&B as a 7 out of 10. But when I booked I really thought it would touch the 9 out 10 region.

As the owner of Stoney Ridge I would like to clarify some of the remarks made about this gentleman's stay with us, he seems to be inferring that we mislead him as to the size of the bed. The bed is a standard English kingsized bed i can only assume he was expecting an American kingsize which is considerably larger.
Most of our furniture was inherited from parents and grandparents, the decor may not be so some tastes but it suits the components that make up our home. It is annually decorated and updated.
The poultry are our pets and we have kept poultry for 25 years, most of our guest's like to see and hear them and of course enjoy the eggs for breakfast.
Had he come at other times of the year he would have heard ewes and lamb's or cattle in the neighbouring fields, we do live in the country.
The last point is the pool, this is a domestic situation not a hotel, there is no charge for use of the pool, there are 2 opportunites to swim every day, we need to know when the cover needs to be removed to make ready and also for health and safety measures we need to know exactly when people are using this facility.

We started Bed and Breakfast in 1990 as an experiment and loved it so much we are still doing it. Our first 'victims' still return so we must be doing something right. ... more   less
