This is a very friendly and very cosy B&B. The staff were extremely helpful and pleasant. A warm family feel about the place. The breakfast was delivered in a friendly café-style environment and the host & hostess were very attentive and the fare was exceptional, the full English breakfast was exactly what it says, 'Full English'. The tea, coffee and toast was not only complimentary, but also on an endless supply. This is an atypical good old fashioned English N&B set in an idyllic location close to Mam Tor in the heart of the Peak District and I highly recommend it.

Room Tip: 2 Rooms do have balconys with good scenic outlooks

Superb accommodation with very welcoming staff make this a place of joy to stay in. Rooms although very compact and bijou were spotlessly clean and well furnished with copious amounts of tea and coffee on tap. What made this place so special were the staff. From Lynne the owner to all the ancillary staff it was a very special and welcoming place to stay. Breakfast was huge and nothing was too much trouble. Even had our own alarm clock namely the church bells which awoke us to a new day by chiming every quarter hour, which some people may find annoying but we found charming. In the centre of the village it was an ideal spot to explore the surrounding peaks and local attractions. Would heartily recommend it to anyone and we won the quiz on Sunday night!

Room Tip: Rooms on front have view of church but loud bells in the morning

We stayed for 1 night & had a lovely relaxing time & great sleep in a cosy bedroom at the pub. The pub is very much a local, & we were made welcome by the staff. Incredibly, our friends had rung the pub before we arrived & they'd kindly arranged for fizz to be placed in our room!
The shower room had, however seen better days. The tiled floor was badly cracked, the loo roll holder was rusty & the inside handles of the shower screen had orange mould on them. I decided not to shower again in the morning, though my husband didn't mind about the bathroom at all, I'm a little more fussy, and was disappointed it wasn't properly clean.

Thank you for your review of The Shoulder of Mutton. We have taken on board your comments about the tired bathroom and have taken steps to improve the flooring, replace the shower screen and change the toilet roll holder. We would like to emphasis that the bathroom was spotlessly clean and the "orange mould" you describe, was in fact the chrome finish coming away on the inside of the shower door. This prompted us to move forward the planned refurbishment of the bathroom, which was scheduled for spring, so as not to disappoint guests in the future.

Apart from this small issue, I hope you enjoyed your stay with us here at The Shoulder and would stay with us again when in the area.

On phoning to enquire about a room was informed that the only room left was compact and that some noise from the bar may be heard. Booked the room anyway as we did not intend to spend much time in the room (and the slight noise did not keep us awake). The room was compact but very clean, and contained everything needed, including plenty of tea and coffee, a hair dryer and an extremely comfortable bed. The en-suite was also very clean with complimentary toiletries. We arrived on a Sunday night, which was quiz night, and was very enjoyable, finishing off with a free supper! The breakfast is freshly cooked and certainly set us up for the days walking activities. What make this pub so special is the attitude of Lynne and her staff, who really do believe in going the extra mile, nothing was too much trouble for them. The pub is also well situated for visiting many of the Peak Districts landmarks. We would not hesitate to recommend The Shoulder of Mutton and look forward to returning.

Stayed here for a Saturday night, the hosts were very welcoming and allowed us to leave a bag there before our room was ready so we could head out on a ramble. The room itself was clean, spacious and well furnished, as was the en suite. Breakfast good and hearty too :)
