We stayed in Byre Cottage (one of three cottages at Rowdale) for 4 nights in April. The cottages have a lot of charachter and ours was very well equipped with new kitchen and bathroom (we didnt see inside the others).
The booking process was easy and the owner was very helpful when we were there.
There were chickens and geese roaming the grounds which was great, we even had a cheeky chicken come in to our kitchen looking for crumbs!!
It would have been idyllic apart from one thing: the road...
The front of the cottages is approximately 20 metres from a road (which is shown on the map on the website but I wasn't expecting the road to be as busy as it was). In the morning and afternoon when you most want to sit outside there is regular traffic including HGVs to the point that it put us off from sitting in the garden. Very disappointing given that our garden in the middle of Brighton is a lot more peaceful!
By the time the sun sets th road is quiet, so it is not an issue at night.
Even more frustrating is that there is a lovey garden area to the rear of the cottages (from which you still hear heavy traffic but at least the cottges block most of the noise and visibility) which guests renting the cottages are not permitted to use. Given that this part of the garden doesnt overlook any other properties it seems a bit petty not to let guests use it.
So if you want an excellent, good value base from which to explore the peaks - I would recommend these cottages, but if you want to get away and enjoy your breakfast or sun downers to the sound of nature - look elsewhere.
