“Derbyshire Break 2014”
Reviewed 15 June 2014

On our last full day in the Peaks we had booked a Dinner at the Riverside House Hotel, or so one had thought. Having what I may term as a senior moment I had book somewhere completely different, they did find us a table and allow us to have a two course meal rather than the set three course of the dinner menu. We had hors d’oeuvres of prawn filo and smoked chicken, with the main of duo of lamb spring veg and daff potatoes, followed by a pre dessert taster of apple raspberry jelly and poached pear raspberries and baked sponge dessert. The setting, service and cooking here is superb and the lunch menu is fantastic value we would most certainly come again on our next trip to the High Peaks. We took the time to have a look in the church and the old sheep pen by the river which held the sheep after washing in the river before shearing.

Stayed at Riverside House for one night in early May. First impressions are good, the hotel is in a beautiful setting by the river, it is a pretty building and the reception staff welcoming and professional. The room however (#3 or "Fern") was definitely on the small side, at this sort of price I expect to be able to watch the TV from somewhere other than the bed, and beginning to err towards the shabby side of chic. The bathroom was spacious enough, but only had a shower attachment on the bath and no shower curtain. Not my preference. We ate in the restaurant and had a reasonably nice meal, although the steak was slightly over cooked for our order. Again though, the price doesn't exactly make this a value proposition. Overall this was a pleasant enough experience, but for what it was, an expensive one.

Room Tip: I would ask if they have any larger rooms.

We go here occasionally for lunch. It never disappoints and is always special. Full of old world charm it is like stepping back to a quieter age. You are ushered into tastefully furnished sitting rooms before being summoned to table. The service is excellent, the food interesting and beautifully presented and the wine list very comprehensive (if expensive!). There is a tranquil river-side garden for a little après lunch promenade and the setting is idyllic For a special occasion or to impress visiting friends it cannot be equalled.

We stayed here for a long weekend. Its beautiful. Our room was nicely decorated (roll top bath) and some lovely touches, fruit, bottles of water, tray of nuts, filter coffee, biscuits, sherry and chocolates, replenished daily too. Service is fantastic. The bed in our room was too soft for us so Jo and her team arranged another room with a firmer bed and even moved all our things for us while we were out. Food is cracking too, six courses and a massive wine 'menu'. But if you fancy a change there are two good pubs in the village, within walking distance, both serving food. Good base for visiting Chatsworth House. You are really made to feel special at the Riverside. If you are looking for a treat, I would really recommend it.

Room Tip: We stayed in 'Fern' which is a beautiful room (roll top bath but no shower) but bed was too...

We stayed at the hotel for a weekend DB&B deal, it is set in a wonderful location. The hotel is old and full of charm, all the public rooms are beautifully decorated and furnished with antiques. We found the food excellent and there was plenty of it, nice touches were the canapés and pre-dessert. Presentation was good and the staff were polite and friendly during service, breakfast in the conservatory was a lovely touch.
There were a few small things which stop me from rating the hotel as excellent, we had a garden room which was clean and had a king size bed but the décor was dated and a bit tired, the bathroom was the same and the shower never really came warm but the bath water was lovely and hot. The fruit, sherry, biscuits and chocolates were a lovely touch. It was cool outside when we visited and the lounge fire was not lit which was a shame as the room was a bit cold to sit in for any length of time, the conservatory was also cool at breakfast
However we had a wonderful break, the staff could not have been more helpful and we hope to return in the future

I booked a table for two online from their website for Saturday 1st February. I received a helpful and polite response. We arrived for lunch at one, and were warmly greeted and place by a real fire in a cosy area. The luncheon was two courses for £12.00 which was excellent value. We chose from a good menu and ordered a bottle of wine, The atmosphere was very warm and relaxed. The food was well cooked and presented and we chose to share the cheese and biscuits for an additional course which was plenty for two. We would recommend to anyone to dine at the Riverside House Hotel
