River Cottage is simply delightful; the rooms are well appointed, attention to detail spot on. Jilly and John are splendid hosts; the breakfasts are fantastic, with freshly made bread and homemade conserves.

This was my third time at River Cottage and it was as good as ever. Gilly and John are great hosts and happy to share all the local knowledge of what to do and where to go. Breakfast was the best I've had especailly the black pudding! I can't say I found the A6 to be an issue, the room was lovely and quiet at night. We will be back again.

We stayed for two nights. Met with a lovely welcome, with lots of information about local pubs and walks etc. Room was very nice, as was the en-suite, both clean and nicely decorated (my wife loved the wallpaper!). As with the previous review, I was a little concerned with potential road noise, but it wasn't an issue. Breakfast was delicious, perhaps one of the best I have had, served by the every friendly Gilly and John.

The location is perfect, there are a few walks right from the house (we took the circular route to Monsal Head) and a couple of pubs in the village. We ate at the Bulls Head both nights, food was good for pub food. We did try to get a table at the (I think) White Hart Inn, which is a short drive away, but on a Thurs night they didn't have any tables! So I suggest a reservation - it looked very nice and was highly recommended by our hosts.

The only slight negative for me personally was the length of the bed. I am fairly tall, and the bed had an 'end' to it, which meant I couldn't sleep stretched out, so not a great sleep.

Overall we loved the place and if we return to the area (maybe with our bikes next time, to ride the Monsal trail) we will certainly trying to stay here.

WOW ! Stay here if your looking for privacy but with that little extra - in the way of fantastic hosts - who give a warm welcome & a sincere interest in their guests & good conversation if wanted. Our room was lovely with a super spacious shower room. All extremely clean, with beautiful quality curtains & bedding. As i say - when staying away from home I would like the same quality or better, and this was certainly so.
We managed to sit next to the river each day on return from our walks in the garden with a nice glass of wine ( which we brought with us - can put it in the fridge till needed ), feeding the Trout & a couple of ducks. So relaxing!
Then there's the breakfast - all freshly cooked to order. Delicious. Lovely freshly sliced fruit and the homemade bread & jams / marmalade just made our stay more special.
We booked in advance at the Ashford Arms in the village for one evening meal which was really nice & also lovely that we were able to walk there & back. You will find a torch in the bedroom for on the way home as River Cottage is just on the edge of the village away from other houses. The 2nd evening we booked in at The White Lion at Great Longstone about 2 mile drive away. Yet again a wonderful meal, really well presented.
Thankyou John & Gilly.

River Cottage is a delightful place to stay. A genuinely warm welcome from Gilly and John - we felt very comfortable from the moment we arrived. Our room was lovely with a truly luxurious bathroom - there wasn't a thing they'd overlooked. We had a slight concern that there may be some road noise but this was unfounded - a very quiet spot and a great nights sleep (a far cry from the night before when we'd stayed in a 4* hotel in a room above the kitchens!)
Breakfast was quite a feast, with a huge choice made with locally sourced ingredients, although with the toasted home made bread and preserves (lime and ginger, yum), I could have filled up entirely on toast. Great location for walking and cycling, and two good pubs just a short walk away. Highly recommended.

What a super place -
I just can't fault it at all. Gilly and John were perfect hosts and cooked us amazing veggie option breakfasts every morning for the 3 days we were there. The room was immaculate, right down to a lovely selection of teas and fresh milk. The bathroom was spotless and again had everything we might ave needed for our stay. Bakewell is a 5mins drive away, quite walkable, but we chose not to, as we enjoyed wonderful walks that we could pick up right from our front door. Gilly even gave us a laminated walking map to use for the day. Dont worry about the fact it is on a main road, we didn't notice at all. If it had been a little warmer I am sure we would have made more use of the lovely little tables right on the river of an evening, just a few setps away from our room, or even enjoyed breakfast out there. We will hopefully be visiting this place again sooner rather than later. Massive thank you-s Gily and John - Kelly & Geoff x

Room Tip: Any room is fine, even with the bathroom across the hall - we didnt see another person during the cr...

We stayed for 2 nights and had a great stay. Very friendly welcome, comfortable room, spotlessly clean, excellent breakfast. Great situation for the Peak District with walks you can do right from the door and Bakewell/Buxton short drives away. Yes it's next to the road but it's also next to the River Wye and the garden is beautifully located next to it. The owners, John & Gilly, go out of their way to make you welcome and there are lots of little touches that show how much thought they have put into it.
As regards the village (5 to 10 mins walk) there is a pub that does decent food/beer and is friendly ( the Bull's Head) and we also had a lovely meal in the White Lion at nearby Great Longstone. We don't normally stay in B & B's (prefer hotels) but in this case we'll make an exception and will definitely return.
