“Austrian Trip”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 May 2014

Had a marvellous trip to Austria with Shearings and were based at The Schlosshotel Rosenberg. We used this as a base. The accommodation was first class and the food was five star. Service was absolutely fantastic and meals were well organised and of the highest quality. The hotel is set in the beautiful village Fieberbrunn. We went in June. The air was clear and the the evenings were spent sat outside in the old castle courtyard. All facilities are of the highest standard.

Room Tip: We were at the back end of the hotel looking on to the hills. A bit of a walk through the hotel tunn...

This is a lovely quirky hotel. I stay in a lot of hotels with work so am always on the lookout for ones that are individual or have a bit of character as so many chains are the same wherever you go. I booked it for a week’s skiing holiday because it looked like an interesting place to stay and had a wellness centre.

It is a 12th century castle that has been renovated into a hotel. There is a suit of armour by the entrance, flags, halberds, thrones and notes on the famous people who have stayed there from Nostradamus to Napoleon Bonaparte. I loved it for being different.

The room was spacious with robes, slippers and towels for use in the wellness area. It's lovely to be able to relax in the pool, jacuzzi, sauna and / or steam room after skiing and before dinner. My only criticism is the jacuzzi was colder than the pool.

The food was excellent. We were allocated our dining table for the week on the first night. Our table was in a turret to the side of the main restaurant, which added to the atmosphere. There are four courses each night, soup, salad which you help yourself to and a choice of mains, meat, fish or vegetarian followed by dessert. The apple strudel and Sachertorte were particular highlights. Monday night is gala night where all four courses are served at the table along with a glass of prosecco.

The bus stops are right outside the hotel and there is a courtesy shuttle bus you can book to take you to and from the local slopes in Fieberbrunn. We had an area lift pass so took the local bus to St. Jakob and Waidring. The buses only run in the day and the area around the hotel is quiet. You can walk into town or get a taxi or just relax in the bar with a drink. Not a party resort more set up for families and people travelling by car.

All in all a very enjoyable base for a ski holiday. I would have given it 5 stars if the shuttle bus ran in the evening.

I believe the hotel is a converted castle and as such is a bit on the quirky side which we found appealing. Large, warm, comfy clean room. Bathroom could have done with modernising but it too was large and very clean. If I was being picky I could say the room would benefit from a kettle but it didn't really bother us. Only real issue was the view from window, we didn't notice on arriving as it was dark but in the morning on opening the curtains we looked out onto a large metal electrical unit. As we had already unpacked we didn't fancy packing up and asking for a move so just put up with it. Food for dinner was okay, you have to choose the night before. It was fine but really nothing special but breakfast had everything you could want. Staff throughout polite and friendly. We went to ski and ski bus to slopes right outside the hotel. Had a good time and hotel all in all was a great place to stay and would recommend.

Just spent a week on half board as a solo traveller skiing at the local ski resorts. The hotel is very comfortable with many lounge areas so you can relax and spread out after dinner. The menu offers a limited choice - basically salad and soup buffet followed by a choice of three mains (meat, fish and veggy) and then a no-choice desert. As a solo traveller I was made to feel very welcome. The sauna and pool areas are very good. I would definitely visit again.

The descriptions of the hotel already given are pretty accurate, and in the main we enjoyed our stay but had a few reservations about the hotel itself. Our bedroom, 109, is at the end of a winding corridor on the ground floor. The decor was a little tired, but the room was warm and clean and we had a bath (great for soaking away the aches and strains of a day's skiing). There was a balcony with two chairs but the view was not very inspiring, as it was mainly of an ugly green electricity sub-station. At least being on the end of the corridor meant we were spared the sound of other guests going by. The Austrian twin beds had comfortable mattresses and rock hard foam pillows. There was no kettle for tea/coffee making, but white robes and extra towels were supplied for the wellness area (which we didn't use this time so can't comment).

The breakfast was very good buffet style with hot scrambled egg, bacon, sausage, and cold options - cereal, yogurt, ham, cheese, breads, juice, fruit, etc etc. There was also a counter where you could order a fresh fried egg. Evening meals by comparison were a bit disappointing.... help yourself salad bar, soup, and then be served a main course (the choice of which was to be made the night before). The salad bar had a very poor choice, compared to other Austrian hotels we have stayed in at this level, and the main course tasted as if it had been on the hot plate for hours, including french fries one night which were uneatable, and no one thought to ask if there was a problem with the great pile of chips left on our plates. However, our main gripe was that we were expected to be sitting at the table between 6pm and 7.30pm which is very early for us, and didn't leave much time for having a sociable drink in the bar beforehand. One evening we were dragged out of the bar at 7.40 by the Italian head waiter, who wondered if we wanted dinner that night. Not very relaxing.

The skiing was great. You have to use the ski bus to get to the Fieberbrunn lifts. We also used the local ski bus to go to Waidring to ski the Steinplatte, and another day we went to St Johann (although there are not many direct buses returning from the main St Johann lifts, and you may want to ski down to the bottom at Eichenhof and catch the bus there). The ski bus stops are a few yards from the hotel. The hotel offers a taxi service to the Fieberbrunn slopes, and you need to book your time the night before, and agree with the driver when he will pick you up in the afternoon. We are slow, older intermediates, and there was plenty of variety for us, some quite steep reds, and comfortable cruising blues, with still enough snow for gliding along paths through the trees. Our favourite ski hutt was Stangalm near the top of the Penzing lift at St Johann - gorgeous mountain views from the covered balcony.

Schlosshotel Rosenegg is a couple of bus stops outside the village of Fieberbrunn, so it is not the place to go if you want lively apres ski. Buses don't run in the evening so you could walk to the village 15-20 mins, or get a taxi. And Fieberbrunn itself is small and quiet. We would not go back with younger members of our family who would want bars and music. However, we got a good last minute deal with Crystalski, and the quiet and slow pace suited us just fine.
