“It has been through a typhoon alright”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 July 2014

We stayed at Leyte Park Hotel while helping out at the nearby center for typhoon-stricken victims. There were 5 - 8 of us in the group and throughout our stay, I saw several groups checking in and out -- the hotel must be making serious money from volunteers coming from all over the world.

What is sad though is that they have not taken any initiative to reinvest the money back into repair work for the hotel. The entire property looked tired and dated (think missing shingles from the roof, bed linens with cigarette-induced holes, and stucco walls dating back to the 70's). It even smelled damp as if the typhoon just happened yesterday when we visited a good 9 months after the typhoon. The only saving grace during our stay as volunteers (which might not even be the case if you came as a tourist), is that the bathroom showers only spewed cold water out. Pretty refreshing for a much awaited shower after a hard day's work out in the sun.

Lovely views. Be prepared for Mosquitos. No nets over beds. No protection available from the hotel. They would benefit from a small onsite shop as I had to take a taxi some distance to find one. Food is not bad. Entertainment not bad. Would benefit from wifi in rooms. All in all not bad, but I didn't feel that the concern for the customer was of a standard to be expected from a five star or tristar hotel. It's average. On my last day a man on reception rang me at 6am. I'd booked a taxi with him the night before so he had my mobile number. I was surprised to be woken up at that time. Even more surprised when he asked me if I wanted to extend my stay. It became clear very quickly that he hadn't given any bought to what he was asking me. It was simply what he was supposed to ask before the end of his shift. My flight hadn't been cancelled and my taxi wasn't due until 11.30. For me that summed up a thoughtless attitude to customers.

The staff of the hotel were extremely helpful. The rooms were nice and well kept. The restaurant was nice but a bit expensive ... we ate at the restaurant down the hill over the water. My wife loves squid and the offerings were excellent. The breakfasts were well done and always served hot. The hotel's proximity to government offices and attractions makes it the perfect location.

Room Tip: Overlooking the pool at either end of the main building are excellent if you want a beautiful view...

We went to Tacloban to do relief mission. One of the hotel i had stay was totally damage by typhoon Yolanda. Since most of the foreign relief agencies are base here. The group also book at this place. This hotel is really old. It needed general renovation. It's a waste because the location is really nice. Foods are ok, fresh. The rooms, they have so many beds (6). I think it's because so many volunteers from other country and locals coming to help out. Anyway if you take out some of the beds. The room will be a good size. The shower mixer is defective in room 103. You have to hold the hot water transfer while bathing. If you don't hold it, water will return to the spout, no shower. Hope they will renovate it. It's a waste for a location like these.

As at just before Xmas, LP had rooms available unlike most places around Tacloban which were booked well into January due to the influx of aid agencies. We had a cottage which had running water (cold only like the rest of Tacloban right now), and generator running all day allowing aircon, needed more to keep the mosquitoes at bay rather than the heat. Sheets were really old with hols in them... We understand what the hotel has been through (one of the storm chasers stayed here and captured the footage), but we were being charged over P3100 per night. We had to ask three times for the room to be cleaned - the only time during six night stay. No change of sheets, failed to provide more shampoo... This is a hotel that is going to struggle to regain its place in the market. We stayed at another hotel for a couple of nights - cheaper and better.

The middle of November it was the only hotel open after Typhoon Yolanda. They provided a clean, secure room and were able to serve a hot lunch and dinner. No electricity or running water, but the entire city was the same. Red Cross and other relief agencies also based themselves out of this property. Excellent location, scenic (given the disaster) and a nice breeze coming in from coast. Of all the hotels in Tacloban, it appears Leyte Park will probably recover quicker than others.

Room Tip: Until electricity is back on try to get a room facing east.

Nice views but the whole resort is need of a serious make over if they want to attract more guests in the future, beds where really bad and aircon did not cool the room at all. Surroundings are nice and a couple of good restaurants and bars where in close proximity.
