We went to Catherine Palace as part of a tour organized by our cruise ship, and am so happy we did. So much to see and learn, it is gorgeous inside, and the Amber room is beautiful.
It is 45 minutes from the old town, but definitely worth going to if you have the means of transportation and time.

Loved it. Took a tour that was offered by our hotel. It is about a 40 minute ride from center of town. A must see if you visit St. Petersburg.

On our recent cruise of the Baltic, St. Petersburg was one of our ports of call. One tour offered was to Catherine's Palace, the former summer palace of the Russian czars. It was at one time occupied by the Nazis and subsequently nearly destroyed. Thankfully, major portions of this beautiful building have been restored and it is now available for tours. It is a VERY POPULAR tourist destination, so be prepared for lots of people and long lines. It seems like there are two different entrances and one never knows (nor can choose) which one will be assigned. Our tour guide told us that both were similar and allowed one to see the exact same number of restored rooms; just slightly different. The highlight of the tour (and why the lines are long and slow) is the Amber Room. During WWII, the room was "lost" (of course, the rumor was that the Nazis had something to do with this). In any case, after many years of reconstruction work funded by the German government, in 2003 the room was reopened. Absolutely no pictures are allowed in here, but people want to stand and gaze at it for hours. This is why the lines slow down. As one moves through the various rooms, one gets a real sense of what it was like to come to a palace...to be overwhelmed by opulence. Our guide told us that that was the main purpose of this palace; not necessarily to live there (the royal family actually preferred another palace for that) but to entertain and amaze people. The grounds also include extensive gardens, although we did not have time to go through them. We were also quite amused to be greeted not once but twice by mini brass bands. The second one (right outside the entrance) was a great amusement and made the waiting time go by quicker. This group is larger than the first and quite entertaining. They played the dance of the swans from "Swan Lake" and even moved the line of players left and right in the manner the dancers do in the ballet during this number. It was great!

One of the most beautiful palace you will ever see. Parquet floors, amber room. many beautifully decorated rooms. Another example of opulence fo the time.

lovely palace and nice garden. Though the palace was repainted in a too "new" color, it is still a marvelous place to visit.
