“Nice simple skiing hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 February 2014

Comfortable, warm hotel, perfect for a skiing holiday base. Good facilities for skiers, including ski cellar and drying facilities.

This is a quiet hotel and village - not one for travellers after nightlife. If you want noisy evenings - don't waste your time coming here - you'll spoil it for the rest of us.

Its a little odd that there's only a restaurant, and no separate bar, or lounge where one could relax after ones evening meal. Also note that the Wifi (ask at the bar for the code) only gives reception downstairs, and only for two hours on each code.

The food here is excellent. The chef is superb. A small oddity is that they only do a choice of two menus each evening meal and they expect you to choose at breakfast. A little odd, but the quality of the food is top notch. Although we booked half-board they also include afternoon snacks (very simple) which were appreciated when we returned from skiing each day.

Another oddity is that they expect you to settle your bar bill each day. To me it wouldn't be unreasonable to do it at the end of the stay. Maybe they've had bad experiences in the past with people running out of money or arguing what they'd had, but a swipe of a credit card at the start of the week would sort that.

Location and skiing - its about 5 min out of Kirchdorf village, and that's about 10 min from the Kirchdorf chairlift. The ski area at Kirchdorf is small and only really good for a warm up on the first day. After that you need to get the ski-bus (included in lift pass) to the bigger areas. The lift-pass includes: St Johann, Fieberbrunn, and Steinplatte (Waidring) which are all huge, as well as Kirchdorf, St Jakob, and some other misc small lifts. The ski-bus service between all these is pretty good, although the timetable is a little confusing. Top tip - there's an additional bus service running between Fieberbrunn and Waidring all day, which isn't shown on the timetable because its run by a different company (still included in the lift-pass though). Second top tip - the bus timetable uses 'Waidring' and 'Steinplatte' interchangeably (Waidring is the village, and Steinplatte the mountain - gondola base), it calls the Kirchdorf chairlift 'Sesselbahn' (not 'Kirchdorf sesselbahn' which would be more helpful!). Third top tip - before you go, look on Google maps and familiarise yourself with the St Johann - Fieberbrunn - Waidring/Steinplatte ring, so you know whereabouts the villages and towns are in relation to each other before you start looking at the bus timetable.

Skiing - the areas mentioned above are all really good, and have snowmakers so in season, you can be absolutely sure that there will be good skiing.

We had a really good trip here and could easily see ourselves going back year after year.

the good
very clean hotel, very friendly staff (excludes one night when we returned at 11.59pm to find it closed and therefore locked out, we left our keys with HUGE chain at reception when going out, for ease of not having to carry it on our person, less chance of losing it and for fire security, ie they know we are out- there was no infomation about us having to take it with us so we can open the front door, there was no information as to when they lock the hotel up, a key card or a number pad on the door would of saved us having to get Mrs Neuwirt up out of bed. i am sure this is a regular occurance for her and it could easily be solved with a bit of common sense) the showers and taps have plenty of hot water on tap. When we were they they were busy refurbishing the first floor rooms.
the rooms are incredibly hot, like most ski resort hotels, they seem to think after a days skiing, that we then need to be baked at 200 degrees (less 30 degrees for a fan assisted oven). i turned all the radiators off and the room was still warm enough.
i have only been to austria once before, the two things that stopped me going back were the food and the slopes were so busy, this time, the food was not too bad and the slopes were quiet.
we were half board, so a hearty breaky in the morning from a buffet bar, cereals, scrambled egg, bread, toast buns etc, then at breaky you have to choose your evening meal from two choices of main, there was always one of the choices that i liked. on top of that you get a starter, soup etc, a salad bar, and various desserts.
the hotel do have the menu in English too, which helps!!! we only found this out after a few days of head scratching at the choices. drinks you have to pay for, but thats a given.

the bad
i cant fault the hotel, other than, here we go, location, location, location.
we booked through Crystal ski and it said something like the slopes or main ski pick up point were five minutes walk away. its about a 15 minute brisk walk, with no ski attire. to do that walk with boots on and ski equipment on hand, is impossible. The walk back isnt so bad, due to their being two nice Beer establishments on route back to the hotel, which were never passed by without popping in.
The travel rep guy , brandon, casually said we can go and ask someone at the ski hire shop, if we can leave our kit in their ski hut, for a small FEE, which is located at the very bottom of the Kirchdorf slopes, the location that the skibus runs from. It was all a bit vague and they need sort that out, it turned out ok in the end when they said we could leave our kit their in an overnight secure hut that has a heated boot room.
if we they had said no to us leaving out ski equipment there and then normal walking shoes, it would of been a nightmare getting to the slopes.
if you hire your ski stuff, they would store it in this ski hut by default, so you are ok.

the ugly

skibus......working out skibus times and where they go was a nightmare, hence the trip to the beer establishment on the way home, it was a beer of success that you mananged to get home using the bus.
we never skied at the Kirchdorf slopes (too small), so we always needed the bus to get to the slopes.
there is supposed to be a bus that stops outside the Neuwirt hotel, but after the first day standing outside waiting for it, we gave up and got a taxi to st johann. we didnt try for the bus outside the hotel again, we just walked / hiked to the Kirchdorf skischool. To this day, i cant work out the buses, to be fair we never missed a bus, but we found ourselves coming off the mountian early, so that we didnt miss the bus.
The buses dont run all day, there are maybe two on the morning, and two on the afternoon, but who knows.
it was all very random. the schneewinkelexpress bus seemed to be the best choice, it runs backwards and forwards between all the slopes, excludes fieberbrunn. i would say get the phone number of a local taxi service, just in case, its easy to get caught out and stuck at the bottom of the slopes.
food and drinks on the mountain and in the resort were not too expensive at all, not cheap, but also you dont leave with the feeling of being ripped off.

kirchdorf was very quiet for night life, so if you havent left all your energy on the slopes and you feel a need to rip it up, you have to head over to st johann. 10€ taxi ride lots of bars, restaurants etc. but when we went there it was still like a ghost town when walking around on a night. most seem to finish the skiiing, hit the apres ski in the afternoon and then vanish on an evening.

skiing
the slopes were very quiet, hardly and lift queues, even at the bottom of the slopes. you turned up, got on the lift and off you go. this may be due to the time of year, pre school holidays. plenty of long and wide open pistes for beginners at st johanne and at steinplatte. plenty to keep intermediate happy too.
we had some blue sky days and some *can`t see a thing days* if the visibility is poor at the bottom of the slopes then dont go to steinplatte, its fairly treeless up there and its hard to ski when its bleak.
when skiing steinplatte, you must remember you cant ski back to the base, so you need to allow plenty of time to get the gondola back the the base, so you dont miss those pesky buses!
i found the piste markings to be strange, i was forever getting lost of going over an edge which i thought was a run, but turned out to be the edge of a run, just the way they are laid out and orientated, made for some interesting routes. the runs also leave little scope to deviate, once you are on one, you cant really cut back on to others, its easy to get split from your group. not a huge issue, just a quirk of the runs in this region.

the skiing was good for the most part, made better by it being quiet, as we came away it was in need of more snow, lots of underlying ice.
would i reccommend it? yes, but i would look for a hotel in st johann, having said that, even @ st johann you will be walking uphill to the main gondola, at least the skibus dropped us off at a good location.

you would think the hotels in Kirchdorf would group together to sort out a mini bus for the residents to get to and from the slopes, maybe a couple of runs on the morning and a couple on the afternoon and maybe a couple on an evening, it would open up the area of Kirchdorf alot more.

at the end of the day i had a good time and the above are purely my observations.
it was great value for money and for that price its worth a go.

as for other comments about the door not being big enough to get their cases in or the bright decor, in this catagory i could add that my toilet was really low and i need my skipoles to get off it! :-|
oh and i had a magic carpet in my room, that seemed to want to take off everytime i stood on it, even more so after a Beer. :-\

This has been my third visit to this hotel for skiing trips and I can say that I will be returning next season. It is one of the only local hotels that cater for single guests. Distance from local slopes 15/20 minutes walk and found the walk in the morning rather invigorating and a chance to see the village coming to life.(if you are fit enough to ski this walk would not be a problem).Checked in by friendly staff and whenever needed help just put my head around office or dining room door.Found single rooms previous years adequate but pleasantly surprised to be put in double this year, room warm enough and had window open most nights , shower nice and hot and plenty of water, spotlessly cleaned everyday. Food and service in restaurant great,4 courses, 2 choices of main course, and as much continental breakfast as you want.
What more could I want from this hotel? It would be nice to have Internet in rooms so I could have private FaceTime/Skype with family rather than downstairs in restaurant/bar.

Room Tip: Bear in mind this village is mainly a lot of retired people so the nightlife is not full on but if y...

The Neuwirt is on the edge of a very quite village. The facilities are very typical of a family run Austrian hotel, a warm welcome and good service. Our room is well laidout, with great heating and lots of hot water, brilliant after a hard day on the slopes. Breakfast is typically continental, buffet style, evening meal menus are on the table at breakfast when you need to chose what you want. There is always a choice of two mains, with one choice of starter and dessert. A well presented salad bar is part of the menu choice, so four courses really.
The walk to the ski bus is about 500 metres, all on the flat and once you figure it out the timetable and links to other resorts are easy to get to. Ski storage is in the basement, with a few steps up to outdoor, no real problems here either.
At the time of writing, the Wi-fi is free for 2 hours with a code from the bar, so this is bit of a bonus, although you can only get it in the downstairs rooms (not bedrooms).
This is our second stay in Kirchdorf and would recommend only if you are not looking for apres ski as this is limited in resort.

Room Tip: 212 very warm!

Sure the Neuwert is a little further out but very walkable to the ski school etc, about a 20 minute stroll with the ski hire shop half way all very flat. The ski bus is from the hotel well in time for ski buses and ski school.Leave your equipment at the ski school it makes life easier.
The Neuwert is a very good standard and the food is also to a very high standard but Austrian tastes seem to phase some people. If you like meat, soup, puddings...great..a salad bar is also available which makes the fourth course (have as much as you like). If you are fussy or do not like food stay at home.
Rooms very clean and comfortable with fruit bowl, sauna very nice after a hard day on the slopes but if you want to stay out apre skiing you will miss the bus and miss out on this pleasant hotels extras.
I have been here 3 times now, the Alphof twice and the Mountain High once. I enjoyed them all but this place stands out for quality with value for money
I am going back this year for the first ever Christmas away and cannot wait, see you then and best wishes to Geiorge and the family

A traditional Austrian hotel. A family run hotel with friendly and very helpful staff. Food was good quality Austrian food.

If you want a party hotel you need to book somewhere else but for us it was perfect, relaxed, friendly. We were a group from different parts of the UK so we had a chance to have a few drinks after dinner and just talk and then go to bed and have a good night sleep without being disturb by noisy party goers.

Room Tip: Try to get a room with a balcony

This is a small, family-run hotel / guesthouse on the outskirts of Kirchdorf.
The rooms are clean and tidy (if VERY orange!) and the view over the mountains from the balcony is lovely. The facilities are adequate and there is a room to store your ski equipment in the basement. There were no tea/coffee making facilties in the rooms, but perhaps this isn't surprising from a hotel that charges you for a glass of tap water with your meal!
The best thing about the hotel has to be the food - hot and cold buffet-style breakfast and 3 course dinner with a choice of 2 dishes (showcasing local Austrian specialties) every evening. There is even a "cake buffet" from 4-5pm for anyone returning peckish from the slopes! However, they struggled to cater specific dietary requirements (e.g. vegetarians / Coeliacs).
It was a shame that the hotel doesn't have a pool - its only leisure facility in winter is a sauna. There is a "Wellbeing Centre" in Kirchdorf with saunas / steam rooms / hot tub / (heated) outdoor pool - well-worth a (naked!) visit.
It is worth noting that the hotel is quite a distance from the slopes / lifts and the ski bus only runs a few times a day - can be an issue if you're feeling cold and tired and just want to back!
Would recommend hotel for families with young children or older couples. Anyone looking for apres-ski really needs to go to nearby St Johann.
