We stayed here, just returned this past Wed; miss it already. The unit was overall surface clean; and the location was superb. We loved Maalaea Bay area; it is unspoiled, low key, and one can walk to dining, shopping, and attractions with ease. A lovely walk, at that. Loved the quietness of the area, and the condo was on a dead end street. Whale watching from our lanai was superb, and thrilling. The beach was nice (although the access was a bit treacherous), and the waves were nice and low; great for swimming and snorkeling. The view from the lanai was fantastic, and a source of continuous joy and interest.

That said, the condo was not exactly "home away from home", in some ways. The furniture was very shabby, cheap, outdated, and rudimentary, and the windows in the bedroom were so dirty you couldn't see out of them. The "decorator" touches of pseudo flower arrangements were awful. The oriental sliding screen divider was also not clean, and did not work real well.

The kitchen and bathroom were nicely updated, and the kitchen was very well stocked for all cooking, which was nice.

This unit screams for some comfort updates (not to mention above items in need of correction). A row of Shaker style hooks would be wonderful for such items as towels, hats, camera, purse, etc. Also, a front and back door mat would be advisable. We had to use face towels for that purpose. The lanai "furniture" was laughable; Wal Mart/Kmart plastic junk. Depressing... Our neighbors, btw, had the same comments. The bathroom could have used some more towel racks, and shelf space. We had to dry our towels over the shower rod, and/or on the very worn and cheap chairs in the dining area. Also, some beach items would have been nice; "noodles", coolers, other beach accoutrements. All of these suggestions would not be very expensive. A shower clothesline would have been wonderful. Furnishing updates would be great...

In contrast, our friends, who stayed up the street, and paid the same amount, had a unit (#203 @ The Banyons) which had everything anyone could want. Warmly decorated, nice touches, binoculars, ice maker in the frig, filtered water, toaster oven, nice furnishings, nice lanai furniture and table, hot tub on site. They also had state of the art entertainment (we at least had wi-fi, thank goodness). But, they didn't have the ready beach access we had (although a short walk away), and were on the second floor. We were on the first, which was nice. Our friends unit was obviously owned by a couple who take pride in their property, vs simply an investment.

FYI, if you want peace and quiet at home, keep in mind A-6 is quight literally by the pool; and with lots of activity. Which is true of all the 1st floor OF units here. Most of the time, we were fine with this; and part of the fun activity. We did not encounter any rude or rowdy people at all. We enjoyed meeting many neighbors, both residents and travelers like us. Just know it is not quiet there; and the walls/windows (which we usually had open anyway) are paper thin. So, if you want to sleep in past 6:30 am, forget it. But, people are enjoying, and the sound of the ocean is wonderful.

So, overall, wonderful time, great people there; fabulous setting in every way. Not the best "in house", but we did have a great time there. We didn't spend a lot of time in the condo, anyway. And the time we spent outside around the unit was very nice, and the every am beach walks were superb.

Just know some of the relatively minor issues for consideration. Loved the trip there, overall. Will review some of our other places we enjoyed there.

Also, BTW, Thomas, the grounds keeper, was so nice, hard working, and professional. We really enjoyed his presence.

Room Tip: Just read my review; know it is "quiet" at Maalaea, but not always at Hono Kai Ocean Front...

#A1 Our room was clean and nice. They could use a few more towels for people and be sure to bring everything you need the room had no extras. The beach in front is a beautiful beach for everyone and great for long walks.

Room Tip: Be sure to bring everything you need as there are no extras in this room. #A1

Our family stayed in unit B8, which is a two-story beachfront condo on the second floor. The location was great, central to the whole island. The condo itself was very nice, great decor and very comfortable. We did see a couple a lizards in the condo which made my wife uncomfortable, but it is a tropical location. The condo was well stocked with kitchen utensils, they only thing we had to purchase was some bath soap. There were not a lot of towels, just enough for the 4 of us. There were plenty of beach toys available, several sets of snorkeling gear and beach chairs. We did not see any problems with late night activities at the BBQ area. The only thing that we saw was 1 person wearing a bathing suit she should not have been wearing. This condo was as advertised on VRBO. Our view from the condo was fantastic, could lay in the masterbed and watch the sunrise over the mountains. The beach was only about 30 from the condo. The water was not real clear at the time of our visit, we did find a few areas down the beach that were clear enough to snorkel. Each morning we were able to see several sea turtles feeding on the kelp in the area. Parking spaces are narrow and crowded.

We dreamed of our 2 weeks vacation to be a wonderful vacation. Unfortunately it turned into a nightmare due to those inconsiderate budget renters. Our unit is on the 2nd floor located above designated BBQ, smoking and sun bathing areas where people will gather. The condo noise rule has been developed but NOT implemented as during our stay for a week and a half, we had to due with those budget travelers who hung out below our unit; smoked, drank, made very loud noise until late at night sometimes after 11pm. Although we had told them that they were making too much noise that was bothering us, they were not care. The group tend to know the condo management very well; therefore, the management did not do anything with it. The light at the BBQ area was left on after 11pm every night, which allows people to stay below our unit very late. During our stay we noticed that one of people from that group knows a house keeper that works for the condo. The house keeper mentioned that she opened the unit B7 for her friend to stay. When we went to check with a couple of websites that the condo officially listed that unit for public to book, those dates that he stayed were not officially reserved. Wondering what is happening??????? whether the owner of the unit B7 was aware of his a couple of nights stay from Oct 6-9, 2012.
If your bedtime is earlier than 10pm and you are looking for privacy and peaceful vacation at the Hono Kai Condo, please stay away from beach front units near by the gathering areas as you will never know when you are going to run into those inconsiderate people who may ruin your expensive vacation. Per our condo booklet, the condo manager is only responsible for keeping order, parking, pool, bbq, maintenance of ground and exterior building.

Room Tip: Unit C9: Quiet, on top floor but next to parking lots Unite B12, B17, A17: No privacy at the balcon...

We booked unit A11 through a management company. Although we arrived the day the tsunami hit we were still able to check in efficiently and there were no delays - the pool had even been cleaned out already by the time we got there! On-site manager was pleasant and helpful, especially when we had to try to deal with the management company (who messed up our car reservation, but that's another story).
The room was excellent, exactly as depicted in the online video tour. Free wi-fi, lots of kitchen accessories, cooler for the beach, etc. - the only things we could have used more of were towels (only had 4), and paper towels / toilet paper. On-site laundry room was clean and handy to the unit, but hours were a little restrictive. The place was spotless and perfect for our family of 3. My daughter loved the futon bed / couch, our bed was very comfortable, and the garden patio was nicely landscaped and we enjoyed watching the geckos that came to visit daily. Bathroom was a bit small but still functional.
Location is perfect - quiet, out-of-the-way from the tourist areas, but still only 20 minutes drive from pretty much anywhere on the island you need to go (Kihei, Lahaina, or Kahului) and walking distance to the aquarium and shops. Right on the beach, which was beautiful, although we didn't do much swimming here but spent the days out at other beaches and came back here for lunches / evenings. Beach was fantastic for walking - you can go for miles down sugar beach - but wouldn't recommend for swimming here with younger kids as it's a bit rough / rocky in spots. Pool was clean and quiet, if a little cold. Communal BBQs were handy and we did lots of cooking on them.
It's an older, walk-up complex so don't expect much in the way of decor, but each unit is different as they're privately owned, and the landscaping is nicely done. Overall it is clean, convenient and much cheaper than staying in a hotel and eating out every day - the kitchen was small but had everything we needed. We would stay again but would choose a room with an ocean view just for variety.

Room Tip: Buildings A and B are closest to the beach

We stayed at B4 which i think is the best unit. From the bedrOom you are literally 10 steps from the ocean.
Staff is not the most friendly. When we went there significant construction was goin on. Btw nobody gave a heads up. In the process when we returned our rental car there was a dent. I suspect it's due too all the construction parking next to the guest Parking.

My husband I stay here for our honeymoon and it was great! We stayed in Hono Kai unit A16 which has a garden view and on the ground level. Many of units have garden view and we ended up preferring the garden view since the gardens are really lush, you more privacy on your lanai (those on the beach view end up with a view of people as well) and it's only ~20 feet to the beach (close enough we could hear the waves at night). The condo was nicely remodeled (new bathroom) with everything we could want/need for taking day trips (beach chairs, cooler) and cooking (blender, dishwasher, etc). We really liked the central location of Maalaea since it's so close to Kahului and Kihei but not busy and since Hono Kai is at the end of the road there is very little traffic on the road. There is a small swimming pool but we never used it - the beach and ocean were right there! The beach is great for walking (most of the other condos in Maalaea have sea walls instead of beach). We went swimming and snorkeling right in front of the condo, it wasn't the best snorkeling (Olowalu was our favorite place) but so convenient. We saw whales every day in the bay. We will definitely be going back!
