Owner description: Parks Canada protects and presents the cultural heritage and integrity of Fort Wellington on behalf of all Canadians. Open to the public, the fort tells unique and authentic stories, from the War of 1812 up until the First World War, by facilitating real and inspiring visitor experiences. Costumed historical interpreters engage visitors through interpretive talks, presentations and period demonstrations such as cooking over an open fire, rifle and cannon firings, period crafts and games. Special events take place throughout the year and education programs entertain school age children from the area and as far away as Toronto, Ottawa and Kingston. Currently, visitors begin their visit at the Visitor Centre, enjoying exhibits and an orientation video. Visitors then follow the path to the historic site where interpretive staff dressed as soldiers and wives of soldiers bring the site to life. The Barracks Store Gift Shop specializes in merchandise including local arts and crafts, souvenirs, historical publications, period games and clothing. The Prescott Heritage River Trail is a walking trail running along the St. Lawrence for the length of the Fort property. This scenic trail is enhanced with interpretive panels exploring the history of the property and the use of the river as a transhipment route.

“Interesting history”

A great place to walk around, get some exercise and learn some history. The employees in period costumes are knowledgeable about their costumes and characters they represent.

“Had A Great Time”
Reviewed 31 August 2013

We had not planned to stop here until a friend recommended it. We're so glad we did. We arrived around lunch time so we started with a picnic outside for lunch on the picnic tables provided - great view of the river and across to NY. Inside, we found some excellent displays and a very friendly staff. Take some time to really enjoy all this place has to offer in terms of history, recovered artifacts, video and the block house area. We didn't expect so much to see and do here and our kids (10 and 6) were engaged with seeing everything and filling in the booklet of challenges that the front desk had provided...and there was a prize when their booklet was completed. Put in a wonderful afternoon for $10 - you can't beat that.

“Fun, Interesting and Educational”
Reviewed 22 August 2013

We visited Fort Wellington in July and it was very good. The visitor centre has an old boat that was salvaged from the St. Lawrence River - this was quite interesting as the whole idea of sunken ships and treasures comes into play. The fort itself is interesting and they have people around in period costumes who will do a live firing of a rifle demonstration etc. I can see how history buffs can really become interested in the various uniforms of this time period as they all have their differences and historical meaning. The staff was knowledgeable and very helpful and the small towns around this area (Prescott) have lots to offer if one has the time.

“One more fort off my list!”
Reviewed 16 August 2013

I really like old forts, so much so that I have to limit one per trip. This is a small fort but it is part of our Canadian history and deserves to be preserved. There are local actors dressed in period costumes that do their best to bring back the past. I think that though it is small, the entry fee is small too, and as Canadians we should embrace our rich history by visiting sites like this one. If it were not for those who served and preserved what is now our country, we might have a different flag! As much as I honour and respect our southern neighbours. I am Canadian!

“scary loud cannons near the river”
Reviewed 11 July 2013

The Fort is interesting, the visitor center very informative, the historically dressed staff superb, but I felt they could do more to bring the fort to life. Shooting rifles and cannon is authentically loud, and crocheting while awaiting the visitors on the 2nd floor of the fort is certainly authentic, but the grounds seem well-mowed and plain. Where is the blacksmith, the cooking fire, the bootmaker, the servant cleaning the officer's uniform?
