It will be hard to put down in words exactly how decadent and incredible this resort is but I'll try...

We stayed here for 5 nights and I can honestly say that this is one of the best resorts I've ever stayed at in the world and I've stayed at some magnificent properties... The architectural brilliance of this resort is clear from the moment you walk into that magical foyer - the amazing views past the beautiful ponds and that incredible infinity pool out to the magical blue Indian Ocean are maximised throughout the resort. Once you arrive, you know you're in for a heavenly stay. The food was delicious and perfect and I loved that every morning a new menu was created to ensure that breakfast didn't become a chore to attend. The coffee's were the best I had in Bali - lovely texture and taste - perfect! The villas were massive and offered every mod con one could think of. The views from the villa were spectacular, the mix of Balinese and modern furniture and the use of space was excellent. These villas are something from heaven. The pool and resort facilities including the sun deck were exemplary... That pool.... I spend every day there and couldn't leave the resort because I couldn't bare the thought of losing a day sitting in a cabana or poolside and not taking in that magical view. I'll let the photos do the talking since I can't explain how perfect this place is.

There are only 2 negatives I'd like to point out...

1. The service by some of the staff was a little frustrating only because their English was a little lacking. The staff did try their absolute best to do whatever they could to help us but at times to have to repeat yourself over and over again became a little tiresome. We appreciated and respected, however that they were trying their best and that was more important. However, I'd expect that a resort of this calibre would at least try and get staff that spoke English at a basic level...

2. The resort seemed to open their doors to every tom dick and harry who wanted to have a glance at the magnificent views and architecture of the resort. This was extremely frustrating, irritating and quite frankly marred our enjoyment of the resort facilities. Tourists from all over the world would roll up in a taxi (some bringing more than 5 children screaming and yelling), hop out, wander through the foyer down to the pool and sunset lounge taking hundreds of photos along the way, sit in the sunset lounge not ordering anything at all but just sit and take photos of the resort and it's guests, walk back up to the foyer, hop in a taxi and head off. I remember one example where a couple arrived with the young man wearing a basketball singlet, baseball cap on backwards and looked rather shabby walked in and took their hundreds of photos, took all his clothes off minus his underpants and found a not so discreet location to be with his partner...

When you're paying top dollar for a resort like this, you don't expect your days to be ruined by endless streams of tourists (most of which weren't the type of cliental which would stay here in the future) running through the resort like a whirlwind. Especially when you're trying to enjoy expensive wine while relaxing in the sunset lounge only to have the entire experience marred by a group of children screaming for an hour.

I must stress that while this was incredibly frustrating and annoying it barely puts a dent into the magnificence of the hotel, staff, location and all other factors which make this resort so amazing. Management, please stress to the owner that if he wishes people to return (which we would for an even longer time) then they must do something about rejecting access to outsiders who have no other interest other than 'touring' the resort.

We have a small family reunion every year in Bali as my son and his wife live in India, another relative in Singapore and I live in Los Angeles, California. We always stay in Uluwatu because my son is an avid surfer. Karma Kandara had been our Bali "home away from home" for the past two years. This year, after 3 unpleasant nights there, we called Alila and asked if they could accomodate us right away. We were lucky enough that Sean, the GM, had a 3 bedroom villa available. The next morning we raced over and much to our surprise the hotel had our villa ready for us almost immediately. When we drove up we were blown away by how incredibly beautiful this eco-friendly hotel is. Just breathtaking. We were greeted by Sean and the room manager, handled our paperwork sitting in the lovely open air lobby and then escorted to our villa by Edie, who was to become our in villa host. I could write on forever about how wonderful our stay was. The amenities, the 3 bedroom villa, the spa, the food, the view, the beds, the thick luxurious towels - on and on. I must say, though, with all the magnificent things about our villa, the best part was our host, Edie. He made our stay so comfortable and fun making sure that we were always well taken care of in a truly lovely way. He always was there when we needed him and when we wanted privacy he somehow knew and was not seen. He helped with travel arrangements, our comfort by our huge private pool, making sure we had what we wanted to eat at hand. He was always there when we needed him. I have never, ever felt so well taken care of by a hotel in my life and I've traveled extensively. Edie became a part of our family. We miss Alila and Edie, and can't wait to come back next year and every year after. Alila has now become our Bali "home away from home". Bravo, Sean, for creating a paradise and running it so well.

i have always been drawn to the cliffs of uluwatu, and since we go to bali at least once a year, i try to vary our stay at different parts of the island. this time we chose to visit this hotel for couple days, after staying in a private beach villa in canggu for a week.

other than the beautiful architecture of the place, the service is just outstanding. from the reservations team to our butler, nothing could be faulted. it was unobtrusive yet super attentive. the room was huge, with spacious his/hers bathrooms AND 2 sets of amenities, 2 showers (in and out), jacuzzi bath tub, very decent sized plunge pool, huge cabana overlooking the vista. we brought our 4 yo son, and they provided everything a little boy could ask for. other than toilet amenities, they decorated the room with toys (cars, fire engines), puzzles, wii games. at nite, they would make the day bed into a night bed for my son, and that bed could easily have fit another 2 adults! our king bed was very comfortable, we have not slept so well in a long time so much so my husband enquired about buying the bedding.

we had cocktails before dinner at the drinks cabana, unfortunately to fully appreciate the view one had to stick his/her head out of the wooden slats. this is in comparison to karma kandara which we have also stayed in, where you would have a much better view of the cliff and sea just by sitting in the restaurant.

the dinner was excellent at the warung, delicious indonesian food, and service goes without saying. the breakfast choices were endless, we enjoyed the small "tapas" style breakfast which means you could try a variety of different things.

overall, it was an amazing hotel. we stayed on the 4th tier of villas, which has the best views. we highly recommend it and hope to be back soon.

Was expecting something really fantastic after reading other reviews but left Alila disappointed with what we paid and what we actually got and what was included.

Positives: Food in both the restaurants was good, especially the Warung. Fantastic infinity pool and also the private pool in the villa. Have to give credit for the design of the hotel, modern, sleek (but nothing Balinese about it!)

Negatives:Location, quite isolated, fine if you don't want to go anywhere but to go to Kuta, Jimbaran or Seminyak will take you at least 30 minutes, 1 hour to Seminyak with traffic.
We were warned the beach was 600 steps down the cliff, don't bother! Nice sandy beach but impossible to swim due to rocks and reef. Staff recommended we go to Finns club for beach, 5 minutes away. We were very angry Alila charged us for the 5 minute ride there, they charged us $18 for the use of their car service but when we took a regular taxi to Seminyak, it was only $15 for a 1 hour ride, (bad traffic.) In our Ubud hotel there was a complimentary car service to downtown.
The gym had the smell of sewage floating in! There was a library but very few books and no DVDS, unlike the other hotel we stayed in Bali. Alila is very new but cheap materials have been used, bathroom showed signs of rust and outside cabana furniture was stained. Breakfast is quite expensive and should be included in the price as the hotel is very isolated.
Wine in the restaurants were ridiculously expensive. Didn't like they don't bring out the bill for you to sign after any expense. Take earplugs, every night we were woken by very loud frogs croaking. The Alila is very expensive but we were disappointed they didn't give that little bit extra. In our other hotel in Bali we were given a complimentary cocktail each night, our first night we were welcomed with a refreshing juice, at Alila we were given a glass of water as a welcome drink. Sodas were free in our other hotel and we were given a 6 course dinner as part of the package, with a choice for the main course. At Alila we also had a dinner included in the package, but no choice and only roast chicken and potato salad. Come on, don't be so cheap!

To sum up, we expected more and Alila failed to deliver.

We stayed month ago for 1 night with my family. Despite this villa is famous for honey moon couple, I found this was excellence also for family. Inside the villas we found magnificent amenities ( "she" and "he" designated toiletries was awesome ), IPOD, flat TV, Sound system and flawless WOHA design. If you like interior design, view, architecture and sustainable environment, this is the place.

Be ready also to meet you idol movie star here.

Special note for breakfast team and choice. It is kind of memorable breakfast. Chose the corner with cliff view for better experience.

People wrote many things about its beauty, but I should praise the management for getting the staffs serve the guess with their heart. This is Bali, and we found Balinese heart here. Bravo Sean!

Room Tip: This property has several layers, perhaps 4 layers. We prefer the upper layer and corner villas so you don't get distracted by baggy car noise and more privacy indeed.Try morning walk! It is lovely place to explore.
