Have you ever been to a restaurant and afterwards thought "That was the perfect meal"? That was our experience after our first visit to SaltPepperNutmeg with four friends who'd recommended the place very highly. First, the place. It was a chilly Friday night and at 7pm the tables were full of people enjoying their meals. Each table seemed to have its own decor - ours was a variety of lettuce growing in pots. The walls are covered with customers' sketches, and at the back there's a small library of books that we didn't get around to enquiring about. But it's a warm, friendly atmosphere from the start, and the staff are equally warm and very friendly. Then came the food. My wife and I love beef cheeks and there they were on the menu, so we chose them. Best ever! Our fellow diners ordered the lamb shoulder, the fettucini ragu, the gnocchi gorgonzola and another dish from the 'specials' menu the name of which I don't recall but I'm sure it would have been worth remembering. For starters I had the yellowfin tuna tartar - superb. My wife had the scallops which were tender and juicy with lots of flavour. And I got so caught up in enjoying my meal and lots of interesting conversation that I didn't even notice what the others had for openers but everyone loved theirs. Despite seeing some fantastic desserts go past, including a chocolate birthday cake that looked like a sculpture, we just couldn't squeeze in dessert so we settled on a promise to return very soon. Our thanks to South-African born Chef Paul, who runs his kitchen in a manner both efficient and creative, and to his lovely wife (sorry but didn't get your name) who ensures the smiling waitstaff keep their customers very well served and has plenty of time to answer questions from customers. (Like telling us all the superb cuts of meat they use are butchered to their own specifications from selected beasts.) Drinks are BYO which keeps costs down to a very affordable level for some of the north shore's best food. Six votes for a return visit at the earliest opportunity.

Lunched with a group of eight on Saturday. The food is really delicious and the ambience of the restaurant is lovely. Service is good and food service is prompt. This is a really convenient place to eat if you are going to Roseville cinema as it is right next door. If there is a negative it could only be that not all seating at the tables is on chairs, there are quite a few benches and if you are there with a group of friends for a "long lunch" and a chat sitting on a bench can be a little trying after a couple of hours.

Went to SaltPepperNutmeg with a group of 11 friends. Some place have difficulty in angling a group of this size but SaltPepperNutmeg did it superbly with fast efficient and friendly service. The food was plentiful but really nice as well. Interesting variety of food. They serve a fixed menu that could not really be faulted. We started with antipasto on the table, Crostini of Pate’ and Smoked Salmon, Vegetable Antipasto-Selected Roasted, grilled and Marinated Vegetables with Herbs, Dips and Olives. Tomato with Olive Oil, Basil, Red Onion, Balsamic and Mozzarella Cheese. Hydroponic Salad Leaves with Apple, Red Onion Lemon Dressing, Garlic Bread - we were well satisfied by the end of entrée but that was only the start!
Mains served on the table for all included Vegetarian Risotto of Pumpkin and Saffron, Slow cooked lamb knuckles, drunken chicken with Polenta, Seafood combination and separately grilled snapper and salad, and if this was not enough it was followed by a variety of Dessert Canapé’s. All at a very reasonable price. Really Recommended!!

There's nothing better than a perfect marriage. Here the marriage is between the Roseville Cinema and Salt Pepper Nutmeg. You come out of the theatre, turn right and walk about 6 steps and there you are - about to consummate a terrific night. It was a cold rainy night, the movie was perplexing but the warm and cosy atmosphere tonite was very welcome. 2 Guitarists played and the mood was mellow. We brought our own wine and settled in for an enjoyable few courses. Sharing is an ideal way to go here. The bruschetta of mushrooms and Gorgonzola was lip smacking good. The variety of coloured, sizes and textured mushrooms - room temperature cheese and the deglaze of balsamic on the crisp toast was an amazing taste. The daily special of braised beef cheeks with gnocchi and pumpkin was also a good test of the chef's skill. Unctuous and sticky and melt in the mouth. The chicken polenta dish was less good and somewhat gluggly - but again the salad was a great accompaniment to the heavy rich dishes. I've had the rice pudding dessert on previous occasions and enjoyed it more previously. But the music, good food, wine and rain outside made for another good dining experience. Can't say as much about the movie.

Great place for a meal before a movie. Right next door to the cinema, couldn't be more convenient. The staff too are mindful that service needs to be prompt.

The food was lovely. Everything tasted si fresh. its been a long while since I've tasted such lovely flavoursome tomatoes and olives.

I'm looking forward to going back to sample more of the menu!
