This was my random stop on our trip. Near the coast, small town, Carara Nat'l Park nearby, and the promise of lots of great birds.

This was all of that and more---the hotel room was huge, and the grounds around the cabin were beautiful. The hotel maintains many bird feeders so that hummingbirds and other birds will stick around. Frogs and iguanas are also plentiful around here. The showers are outdoors (and private), so you can enjoy some fresh air while getting ready in the morning.

Meals were prompt and tasty, with lots of local fruit, meat, and gallo pinto. The dining are was outdoors, very clean, and the staff very helpful.

This is a great place to stay with an excellent location. It's not fancy in any way, but if simple & effective is good for you, then you'll love this place as there is little reason to ever be indoors with so much nature to see so close by.

We stayed at Cerro lodge for two nights in early January. It is a friendly, uncomplicated small place close to Carara national park. On arrival we were upgraded to separate cabins for us and our teenage daughters, which was appreciated.

The location and views are great, and so are the feeders. We spent most of the time birding in Carara though. There is not very much to do at the lodge itself. A small pool and an attempt at educational trail.

The rooms are fine and outdoor bathrooms great and practical for the climate. The bungalows had AC which was a pleasant surprise.

Overall this is very good value (but food expensive for the limited choice). I would certainly stay here again.

Room Tip: The bungalow in the sun was not a problem because of AC.

You will be well looked after at Cerro Lodge. You picked this place because you like things a bit rustic, right? You'll love it! The rooms are basic, the bathroom is outside, surrounded by dense flowering shrubbery. You can bird watch as you bathe! The meals are served cafeteria style, substantial and delicious, prepared from local items. The fruits are luscious. The scarlet macaws do periodic flybys - breathtaking. And if you're planning on visiting the nearby national park, book Antonio as your guide. He's the best! We saw lots of different birds with him on two separate early morning outings.

Cerro Lodge is definitely off the beaten track and we spent a couple of days never setting foot off the property. The room we had was really attractively but simply furnished with great views into the garden. All meals can be had in the dining room. The food isn't great - ok but on the expensive side for what it is, hence the 4 rather than 5 star rating.
I agree with previous reviewers about the complexity of pre-ordering dinner and lunch and it would have been helpful to have had it explained when we checked in, but it wasn't a problem. With a bit of English and a bit of Spanish and the help of owner Frederico whose English is excellent everything went smoothly. Special thanks should go to Aurelio who served us in the dining room - he made a great effort to communicate with us.
For us this was the perfect, relaxing, spot to spend our last 2 nights in Costa Rica. Loads of birds including Scarlet Macaws and humming birds.

When I arrived at Cerro Lodge, it was after a day of horseback riding, and I was hot, tired and sore. First thing I did after getting into my very comfortable, inviting room, was get in the pool... perfect!!! Then I took a walk around the ground, saw birds, beautiful plants and flowers. In the morning, Macaws and many other birds are in the trees, so exciting!!! Food is terrific, hospitality excellent!!

We loved our stay at Cerro Lodge for three nights in December. We were there mainly for birding and were thrilled to have the Scarlet Macaws so close every day! It was also very enjoyable to have the feeders off the dining deck where we saw many species. Walking and driving short distances from the lodge yielded even more birds. Antonio took us on a tour of Carara and while birds is not his specialty, he certainly was able to find us some good birds.. Baird's Trogan, Fiery-billed Aracari, Pygmy Kingfisher, Spot-winged Antwren, Rufous-tailed Jacamar, Speckled Mourner to name a few.
We loved the fresh, traditional meals served in the outdoor dining area with a great view. They were the best meals in our three weeks in CR.
It was fun to have the outdoor bathroom! Earlier reports mention how hot the rooms are but that has been solved completely with the addition of air-conditioners.
We found the staff to be very friendly and helpful even with our total inability to communicate in Spanish, Our charades was amusing to both parties and got us by! :-)
The internet was spotty but that did not affect how enjoyable our stay was!
Pura Vida!

I really enjoyed our stay at Cerro Lodge during the first half of our horse riding adventure in Costa Rica. The rooms are basic, but include air conditioning units and ensuite bathrooms with shower. We had a banana plant right outside our room. The setting is gorgeous--beautiful view from the restaurant area, where they have set up bird feeders. We saw many hummingbirds, scarlet macaws, and lots of other species--I'll let some of the real birders tell you about those.

We ate breakfast and dinner at the lodge each day. Meals are typical Costa Rican fare, delicious but simple preparation, served buffet style. The owner's young sons enthusiastically bussed dishes during dinner time and served dessert. I love that the Costa Rican way of serving coffee is with hot milk available, since I think I use more milk than coffee and can still have a hot beverage that way.

I enjoyed walking down to the "Green Land" area, where we saw some very friendly goats, a cow, a pig, and many chickens, which provide eggs for the restaurant. They also have a small butterfly "aviary" with a variety of butterflies including blue morpho and owl butterflies, among others. They bring in chrysalids from the various species. It is interesting to see the different types of chrysalids, as well as butterflies just emerged.

Wildlife we saw on the grounds, besides beautiful birds, included squirrels, frogs, geckos, and a couple of very interesting varieties of spider, one that made a kind of "flower" or crochet-type design in the middle of its web. I'm sure there was much more to see, but we spent little free time there, as we were off horse riding during the day. Most of the clientele seemed to be avid bird watchers with really big lenses for their cameras--serious stuff!
