We were only able to stop here briefly and as it was later in the day there were no guides available but even walking on our own we saw quite a bit of wildlife. The trails are well marked and easy to follow. There are a lots of signs on the trail (in the initial trail loop) which are helpful. We saw a poison dart frog, a puss caterpillar, capuchin monkeys, and a millipede that was about 4 inches long. Near the main park entrance is a bridge over the Rio Grande de Tarcoles. If you pull over to the side of the road you can park and walk onto the bridge and look down and see 20 crocodiles.

We went in with Maurice and we have seen so many animals because of him. He takes his time to show you everything there is to see and has good gear. Also, he knows his birds!

This park was so much better than Manuel. You will not see many tourists, which obviously can be a plus and minus. At the park entrance we hired guide, both to spot wildlife and offer some security blanket. The guides in costa rica have a state certification. If is worth the 60 us we spent for three of us. Bring hiking boots and prepare for mud. Wildlife in this jungle was awesome!! Plan on a couple of hours.

If you go to Jaco you must go to Carara and if you go to Carara you must get Maurice as your guide. He has a cool telescope that he can take pics through with your iphone. Buying the tour guided by Maurice was the best money I spent in Costa Rica.

We went to Carara National Park because we had heard about the macaws there. Maurice offered to be our tour guide through the park. Not only did he take us through the park, but also to tour the north end (which is truly in the jungle!) and then to another location to see the macaws. We did not realize that in July, the macaws nest elsewhere. Through his scope we got incredible pictures with just our iPhones of poisonous frogs, birds, butterflies, catapillars, bats (one of which was very surprising!), monkeys, etc. and the colorful macaws! The next activity of any kind we do in the Jaco area, we will call "Mo"! He has 15 years experience and is very knowledgable!
