Respite Perfection

Review of Old Church Farm
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 25 May 2019via mobile
When our 1939 Rolls Royce began to sputter outside Bristol, little did we know she would lead us to a former RR meeting centre. Maybe there was a method in her madness and she wanted a respite in familiar surroundings? Whatever the kismet that found us arriving as stressed and weary travellers at this charming home, our tensions immediately diffused. Chris welcomed us warmly and escorted us to a lovely room overlooking a manicured lawn flanked by distant hills while the vegetable garden hinted of delights to come at a scrumptious dinner. The roll top bath immediately soothed and all felt decidedly more optimistic.
Dinner service was prompt and gracious, company delightful and we found ourselves grateful this unscheduled interlude had interrupted our planned progress straight back to London.
Now we plan to return to savour the charms at any season of this perfectly charming inn where chef Kate delights at dinner and breakfast with refined flavours. Don’t wait for your car to break down as an excuse to visit!

Thank you to Chris & Kate for hosting our wedding celebration at Old Church Farm. From the welcome canapes, through to breakfast, everything was just perfect for our wonderful occasion and we can’t thank you enough for making our stay so enjoyable and pleasurable. Old Church Farm was the perfect place to celebrate our special day with Family and friends.

As it was a lovely evening we had our early evening photo shoot in the gardens.. moving from one garden to another to enjoy the various background garden scenes. Afterwards Kate’s lovely home made canapes were served indoors and outdoors. There is a skittles alley in the adjacent building – which we all (competitively!) enjoyed playing before dinner.

Leading up to our special day we had spent some time with Chris and Kate planning the occasion. Kate was marvellous in helping and advising us when choosing our dinner menu choices. And both Chris and Kate spent time helping us to plan the day, offering ideas and helping to choose the drinks etc. which worked out perfect.

Dinner was in the magnificent large wood panelled dining room. Seating 16 around the splendid dinner table, this was a perfect setting for us with our Family and close friends. We had arranged to have three options to choose from for each course (in advance of the evening) and considering all the different choices we had made, Kate (who is a cordon bleu chef) prepared and produced the amazing dishes to everyone’s delight. The dishes including local produce and some with home grown produce.

All the bedrooms are individually appointed with comfortable beds, antique furniture and luxurious drapes. We had room 7, the Alveston. This is a huge bedroom and bathroom, which has the most wonderful aspect of the local countryside.

Breakfast was served again in the lovely dining room. Fruit juice, a range of cereals and fruit to tempt the pallet before the cooked breakfast options, all freshly made to order using local produce.

There is so much history of this amazing place going back nearly 900 years! And so much character and interesting stories about how it ‘evolved’ over the centuries. Until relatively recently it was owned by Rolls Royce… which I thought was quite appropriate considering the majority of our party work within the Aerospace/Defence Industry!

All our guests have since commented on how much they enjoyed staying in your lovely amazing Country house. Old Church Farm is the perfect place for a small intimate wedding party. Thank you for being so accommodating and making our special day go so perfect! We had a fabulous time and the fond memories of our special day will stay with us.,. Mike & Sue

We loved hosting your wedding celebrations! What a lovely crowd of friends you have! We wish you all the best for the future and look forward to hosting your anniversary parties too. You are both part of the history of Alveston Manor/Old Church Farm. Chris & Kate

Beautiful house with great views and interesting garden. B&B with a difference. The optional dinner is a must as is the breakfast. Excellent and caring hosts. Worth a significant detour and will certainly revisit

Old Church Farm is a beautiful old country house hotel - originally owned by the Rolls Royce Group and used for company functions/entertaining - now in private ownership and brought up-to-date with all mod cons. It is set in beautiful grounds with a croquet lawn, rose garden and its own abandoned old church tower! It has 7 lovely bedrooms all with wonderfully comfortable Hynos beds and bathrooms/shower rooms with amazing water pressure and tons of hot water - bliss.

Christopher, the owner, is a very welcoming host and nothing was too much trouble. (He even went beyond the call of duty to sort through the rubbish bins after our stay to retrieve something important I had managed to throw out and leave behind by mistake). His wife, Kate, is the chef (cordon bleu trained and previously ran her own restaurant on the South Coast) and produced absolutely delicious, generous breakfasts every day with high quality ingredients (eg. really good local sausages and bacon, freshly-squeezed orange juice etc), good vegetarian options, eggs, omelettes etc.

Dinners are by request and again featured locally-sourced produce; in fact the couple grow many of the vegetables and fruit themselves in their own huge vegetable garden in the grounds.

My extended family and I took all the rooms in the hotel for 4 nights to attend a local festival together and had such a lovely time that, like another reviewer, i am now plotting my next reason to come back! I think it is the perfect place to hold a special celebratory weekend with family or friends, perhaps for an important birthday. If you take over the whole place, you have privacy and can stay in perfect comfort in such beautiful surroundings with all the amazing cooking done for you and served round the big table in the main dining room, and there is fun to be had as a group in the fabulous Skittles Alley in the adjacent converted barn, where there is also table tennis. in summer, you could have a croquet tournament as well.

The hotel is really well-located near the M4 and M5 motorways so would also be very convenient for a relaxing B&B stay en route to Bristol, Bath or Cardiff, and there are several National Trust properties and good golf courses not far away so we hope to go back to visit some of those too in the not too distant future. Thank you so much Christopher and Kate for such a wonderful stay in your charming property.

Room tip: All rooms v comfortable with old-English country house style. Some only have showers. Biggest room with best view is Alveston.

We love whole house bookings too! It feels like having family to stay. If there was a prize for the most descriptive review it would certainly go to you - I may have to crib some of it for the web site!
It's a pity there isn't a star rating for guests so that I could give you 5 stars too.

A brief but altogether wonderful visit. A lovely room in a beautiful building. Plenty of space for anyone planning on a longer stay, including two lovely common areas. In the past, I have used a different hotel for my family visits but will be looking to stay here from now on. I would happily recommend this hotel for anyone looking to relax in this part of Gloucestershire.
