This nature reserve lives up to its name, with a good variety of wildlife, particularly birds and insects. Very popular with wildlife photographers. There is an excellent visitors centre and also an education centre. The weekly nature walks (Thursday mornings at 10,30, I think, starting at the visitors centre) are excellent. Highly recommended!
If you like a countryside walk with lovely views and to spot a.bird or two (!)then you can't beat Paxton Pits. Lovely at any time of the year with lots to look at.Fresh air and finish off with a cuppa in the visitors centre. We love Paxton Pits!
If the weather is permitting you could have quite a nice walk there around the lakes. There is a little cafe that was not always open and a hide looking at one of the lakes if I remember correctly is not as good as some of the RSPB locations but local so we go few times a year.
I visit the pits at Paxton on a regular basis. The choice of trails and habitats means you can see something different each time you visit. The gravelled paths are pretty much all on the flat so walking is easy going, the choice is about how far you want to walk and whether you want to see pits, river or both. During the week the active gravel pits are visited by heavy lorries supplying the A14/A1 road project, but weekends are quiet. The visitor centre has toilets and serves hot drinks and snacks along with gifts. Dogs aren't allowed in the visitor centre, but there is sheltered seating outside if their owners was to stop for a drink and a sit down. There are several hides located around the reserve and these provide the opportunity for quiet bird watching in some good location. A notice board just along from the visitor centre lists observations from the previous month. The pits are easy to get to and have a large parking area. The reserve is well worth a visit any time of year with nightingales in late spring or rooks roosting just before dusk on almost any day, there is always something interesting to see.
Free parking and free toilets at the visitor centre. A couple of walks to choose from, an hour to do the meadow walk and an hour and a half to do the heron walk. We took the dog and had a lovely walk, kept him on a lead for a little way as there were cattle who did follow us! Must be super in the summer, there were benches at intervals, no poo bins till we got back to the car park.
Beautiful lakes and forest patches along a number of walking paths, perfect for walking and hiking (some of the pats can be muddy in wet weather). Home to many species of birds - there are a few bird observatories along the way. Free parking and toilet.
