About a 40 minute trek from the parking lot through woods that resemble some sort of movie scene. Moss covered tree trunks, dead limbs, sparse vegetation, somewhat eerie. The trek is simple at first but soon follows a streambed that has large boulders and requires a bit of climbing to negotiate. The final leg of the trek is more climbing over boulders to arrive at the hole. There are no protective railings or guardrails so be aware and use caution when trying to view the hole.

A lovely 40 minute walk takes you to Harwood's Hole. The trach is initially gentle through beech forest but towards the hole you thread between smooth limestone rocks. The hole is 170m sheer and it is not easy to see down. Be very careful.
Just before the hole, a marked track leads up on the right. 10 minutes takes you to the lookout of sculpted limestone. Far below is the Takaka valley with the mountains of Kahurangi NP. beyond. Cavers abseil down Harwood's Hole and follow the stream down for 4-5 hours to where it emerges below the Lookout - a beautiful trip. Dream of it!
It is definitely worth taking the extra time to walk up to the lookout. The fluted limestone is exquisite.

Amazing walking track through a beech forest, with stunning rock formations around the hole. The carpark based campsite is spacious with well maintained toilets.
Small fee applies for campers.

Starting with a wonderful shady native bush walk the track into Harwoods Hole is like a scene out of the Lord of the Rings movie, actually part of it was filmed up there.
About 45 min walk into the hole with the last section being a bit rocky. Keep hold of young childrens hands as its easy to get close to the edge of the void. Man its a hole in the ground alright, really impressive and well worth the walk in.

The gravel road into the picnic area and start of the walk is narrow and twisty and needs to be driven with care but is passable to all cars but drive slow and keep eyes peeled for on coming traffic.

Really really enjoyed this walk on a level track with only some rocks to negotiate towards the end. The beech forest is so lovely and the hole, although there is not really so much to see, is amazing nevertheless. The drive in was tricky, but fun to drive! It was a nice picnic spot too.
