Owner description: The Ashridge Estate consists of 5,000 acres of woodland, chalk downlands and lush meadows. You can walk for miles and see a variety of wildlife such as Fallow deer and Muntjacs as well as the more common, foxes, badgers, squirrels etc. We have a well-stocked shop at our visitor centre, as well as toilets and a non-NT cafe, which serves hot meals all day long. If you need help when you arrive you will find a helpful volunteer on the reception desk who can point you in the right direction.

“Magic!”
Reviewed 28 February 2012

This must be one of the most beauiful areas in the south of England. Although it is situated in a well populated part of the country it never appears to be too crowded. It is stunning at all times of the year. The bluebells in spring are magical. In the summer it is a great place for a picnic either in a wooded area or in an open space. Autumn is full of colour and fruits of the season. It is not unusual to see deer who roam freely in the woods or even cross the road. By the Bridgewater Monument (check for opening hours....the view from the top is impressive) there is a cafe and a National Trust shop...do check out their second-hand books. And all this is free except for a charge to climb the monument!

“A great amenity”
Reviewed 1 February 2012

Lovey woods to walk - you can get trails from the N.T shop at the Monument. Lovely views across the countryside. Good to see family enjoying the open air - open air cafe is good and reasonably priced. Any time of year is good, but particularly at bluebell time.

“Excellent walks, National Trust Shop and open air cafe and monument with views for miles”
Reviewed 31 January 2012

The perfect place for walks of any length in the ashridge forest with deer if you're lucky and bluebells in June. It is ideal for any age and a popular place for families at the weekend. The cafe provides meals and a big range of freshly made cakes and steaming mugs of tea etc. The National Trust shop is next door and has a room for children to learn about the wildlife in the woods. At weekends there is also a local plant stall with healthy home grown seasonal plants. there are also motorised scooters for people with mobility problems.

The monument is well worth climbing the spiral stairs for with magnificent views for miles around.
