“Excellent small town hotel-very welcoming, comfortable and pleasant.”
Reviewed 13 June 2010

We have stayed here off and on over the years and have seen no change to the high standards offered at this hotel. Edward and his friendly staff would do anything to ensure your stay is a pleasant and happy one. Breakfast is excellent and you feel as though you have your own personal chef looking after you as he runs a "tightly organised ship" in the mornings. The rooms are small but very well appointed, and kept absolutely immaculately. Being in the centre of Berkhamsted means you are a stones throw away from excellent restaurants, and shops but staying at a thoroughly delightful hotel with no problems with car parking. Thankyou Edward for making our stays so pleasant, and we look forward to seeing you soon next time we visit from Scotland.

An absolutely lovely hotel and thoroughly recomended. The Penny is a 3 star so do not expect anything more. However, the rooms far exceed a 3 star standard and the breakfast is the 'cleanest' fry up you will ever eat. All credit to the chef. I am in Heartfordshire on business and have recently moved to this hotel for 2 nights a week for 3 months. I could not happier. Excellent car park, great gym down the rd, cafe rouge next door and excellent restaurants a stone thow away. Very nice rooms which are spotless and have ALL the mod cons (flat screens, tea + coffee, free wifi, phones and excellent bathroom products). All in all a delightful place to stay and all credit to Edward and his team. Thank you!

We found the rooms to be a fair size and of a clean standard. We stayed in the WIGGINGTON room, which had no view at all from its window - apart from the roof next door. Comfortable bed. Slightly noisy air conditioning. The shower was pretty poor, but it did at least work well enough to do the job it was designed for. The room we had was decorated in a fairly modern style and was tidy with things like a hairdryer, iron and trouser press etc. There were nice complimentary items in the bathroom. Staff on the desk were OK but not overly helpful. The hotel has a free car park for guests. Breakfast was fine but was in a room that was rather small and became very crowded. There are very limited hotel choices in this town and from the reviews it does seem that this is the best one. We did not have a bad experience and so this is a positive review - if not glowing. The price was a little higher than is really warranted though.

A nice hotel on the high street in Berkhamsted with friendly staff on reception. Rooms are OK and the breakfast was very good, However at £99 for a standard double, it is quite pricey. Very convenient for the train station.

This is my first time I stayed at a hotel and in fact I am typing this review in the room! It is really one of the best hotel I stayed and I will be coming back for sure. I was over the moon when the chef served me a vegetarian breakfast this morning!

If I am honest, this hotel is far better than Travel Lodge!

Stayed here one night during May before a hospital appointment the following morning .
Had a small problem finding the entrance to the hotel car park but after finding a parking attendant we found it without any problem.
Reception courteous and efficent.
Our room overlooked the courtyard of the Cafe Rouge but no problem with noise. Room was large nicely furnished to a high standard and found the bed very comfortable.
Bathroom extremely spacious supplied with toiletries and lovely white fluffly towels.
Breakfast in a small intimate dining area hot food cooked to order with plenty of choice.
No evening dining facilities but you can have food via room service and there are a variety of restaurants within a short walking distance.
Would not hesitate to use this hotel again.
