“Beautiful Studios in Good Setting, but for...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 April 2014

My wife and I stayed in one of the studios for two nights. We had a very friendly welcome.

The studio apartments are situated right at the water's edge, and within easy walking distance from any place in town, which made it perfect for us.

The kitchen was equipped with everything we could need. Everything in the studio was of good quality, and seemed to be only a few years old. Our bed was very comfortable, and provided for excellent rests (but see more later...)

The view from our bedroom window was good, looking over the ever-changing waters of the estuary (albeit somewhat blocked by a palm tree).

The problem was ... Raglan
This was our first visit to Raglan. So, when the town siren went off with a massive noise at 2:30 am we didn't know what to do. Was there a tsunami? What was wrong? We didn't know, and there was no information piece in the room to shed some light on this... Se we checked outside to see if all people were gathering in the streets. Nothing! It seemed like we were the only people who heard the siren! So we went back to bed ... but were too awake (and worried) to go right back to sleep.

The following morning we asked about the siren and were told that it is the emergency service calling the volunteers when something had happened! What a silly arrangement - to wake the whole town in order to get the volunteers in! Don't they have telephones?

We also found the information centre in Raglan not very friendly - we were treated like we were a bit of a nuisance.

We wanted to go on the harbour cruises, but unfortunately the websites didn't make it clear that the cruises are no longer happening because "winter is approaching!"

Obviously this has nothing to do with Bow Street apartments (or with any other accommodation in Raglan for that matter) but it marred an otherwise good stay.

We will probably go back (only once) to go on the harbour cruises. But other than that, Raglan doesn't really have anything that we would want to go back for. There are many other, more beautiful, places around New Zealand where you aren't blasted by a siren at 2 in the morning, and where the info centre people are helpful and friendly.

Room Tip: Some rooms have better views past the trees. Studio 1, which we stayed in, had a fairly good view pa...

A small group of try-hard golfers anticipating an enjoyable weekend's sabatacle .. charmed by Raglan .. charmed by Bow St presentation & elegance. BUT not so smitten by (1) a TV that doesn't work (2) bathroom handbasin with plunge- plug which plunges/seals magnificently but does not release to allow drainage (3) a shower which doesn't drain adequately resulting in overflow from base & a flooded bathroom floor (4) NOBODY on site after 6pm to assist with any of this .. an 'enquiry' phone contact only, which ellicits no reply.
And, though pre-arranged, adjusted bedding configuration had been overlooked. Was addressed upon arrival, but with an unanticipated 'btw .. that's an additional charge' .. should absolutely have been mentioned when the request was first made during booking enquiry.
At $180+ per night, expected better ( at that price, Sky TV had been assumed, but no ) .. in short, can't recommend ( but COULD have been great ! )

Had a wonderful time every where we stayed. Unfortunately we asked for advice from the information centre. All we asked for was a motel or other with beach views. recommendation was Bow St units which cost us $ 165 for the night. The receptionist was RUDE and not all welcoming. Our "beach view" amounted to looking at the base of a palm tree surrounded by stones, and the upstairs view was looking at the top of the palm tree. Must admit, if we leaned to the side we could see a little of the water but not the beach. WORST place we stayed in on our holiday and would never go back. By the way, if you need an early check out, the office does not open until 9.30am. Way over priced for what you get

Stayed here for 3 nights...fully deserves the praise it gets...welcomed by a very friendly Host...the place is very clean has that womans touch inside ...cannot fault the cleanliness ,, furnishings and surroundings. There are two matters I would comment on ..one: they advertise that Sky Tv is available ...this is not correct...at the price I feel that Sky should be available Second ...dont take Apartment one ...tho you have a small courtyard with table etc ...not far away is a large table ...which sits 6 to 8...our first night there there were guests sitting there enjoying themselves which is great but it looked right into our lounge so no privacy however this only happened on the first night..but it is something to take into account ...other than that great place to stay and so close to everything Thanks Girls for the stay

Room Tip: Not Apartment One try 6 or 7

We stayed for 3 nights, but could have stayed longer. The studio is beautifully presented with a lovely outside area, perfect for a glass of wine. The bedroom was huge with great views out to the harbour. A very convenient location for
eating out.

Raglan is a funky (in a good way) New Zealand destination on the East Coast of the North Island, home to surfies (there is a left hand break on the beach surf), latter day hippies, arty types, and Hamilton"s batch community. With a classic old Pub on the main street that has a eating/drinking veranda on the sidewalk, you can observe the passing parade under a shady umbrella with a handle of cold beer near at hand. The Bow Street Studio at the waters end of the main Street on the waterfront is a turn-of-the-century two story house that was moved there from Auckland. Moving the timber houses around the country is a big industry in NZ that preserves some of the classic villas that are being replaced with larger houses in the growing areas of cities and towns around the city. The Studio is a two story 2 bedroom cottage complete with an outdoor BBQ area that is furnished in an appropriate style for a beach house (called "a Batch" in NZ for some unknown reason). Shops and restaurants are a short walk away, the street is quiet, and there is a good parking area in the grounds. The young crowd in Raglan seems to meet up on the front porch of the library/community center in the evening which seems entirely appropriate for this little gem of New Zealand holiday ambiance. TRY IT, YOU WILL LIKE IT!

Room Tip: Grab the upstairs bedroom

This was a REAL find.
Fantastic accommodation at an affordable price.
Well laid out lounge and kitchen area.
Great waterfront location.
Lovely views from upstairs bedroom.
Very quiet and tranquil
Close proximity to all amenities.
About a 40 minute drive from Hamilton, but WELL worth the diversion.
