Reviewed 23 April 2014

Colin and his wife Sarah gave us a warm welcome and made us feel at home. The room was small but functional. The food was superb and is definitely recommended especially for seafood lovers! It's perfect for those who want to save some money; Norfolk doesn't come cheap. I would definitely stay again.

We stayed with Colin and Sarah as we were attending a wedding nearby. We were warmly welcomed by Colin who is a no nonsense kind of guy whom I liked immediately. Our room was what we expected for an establishment mentioned in the doomsday book and we found it spotless and comfortable.

We had dinner in the evening in the restaurant. My garlic prawns starter was exactly as I had in Majorca last year and my monkfish in lobster sauce was light and delicious and accompanied by saute potatoes and fresh vegetables. My companions were also delighted with their meals.

Colin is a genial host and asked us if everything was OK with our rooms and our meals several times, it's obviously important to him that we have a good time at his establishment.

He was happy for us to stay in the lounge area after dinner and help ourselves to drinks on an honesty bar basis, so we drank and talked until quite late on the squashy sofas!

At the end of the day, if we wanted modern fittings, to be anonymous and not have to chat to anyone, we would have found a chain hotel. Personally, I enjoyed feeling like a valued guest at this old, unique, restaurant with rooms and will find an excuse to return.

Stayed at the old forge recently, and it was a great experience...so why four stars? No shower attachment on the bath! I know this is an old building, but even a little shower attachment on the baths taps would have been so useful. Would have saved me washing my hair in the sink!

I slept very well in the large comfortable bed, and the room was very clean. Had a good shave in the basin in the room, and certainly plenty of very hot water. There was digital tv in the room, and free wifi - perfect.

I had dinner, and it was fantastic. Skate wing was superb and the owner is definitely a skilled chef.

Breakfast was very nice and very well presented, had a full English and nice orange juice waiting for me on the table.

Prompt checking out in the morning, good price which I was happy to pay.
Would I stay again? Yes - but please, add a shower attachment to that bath!

i am surprised this little b&b and restaurant is getting such good reviews. i would describe it no more than very average.
the dining experience was dismal: expensive and ordinary. for the same price there are some stunning restaurants in the area. the owner/cook nosey and conceited. asked and reminded for payment night before as he wouldn't be there in the morning and didn't trust the staff to get the bill right. as it turned out he was there in the morning! curious! breakfast was ok but very limited choice. coffee good.
bedroom included an old uncomfortable mattress. non-cotton sheets. cleanliness of bed linen dubious. no bedside light, but over-bed pull switch which could only be pulled by standing on bed!! hand-basin in bedroom. ensuite was loo and bath only with no shower attachment. no hairdryer [it would get stolen - was the reason]. plenty of hot water.
very noisy for sleeping as on busy main road.

We were recommended this restaurant via our own b&b and we were not disappointed. The food is outstanding and fantastic quality and value. Colin came out to talk to us and ask if our food was ok. Great when a chef does that. Genuinely cares. Will visit again when next in the area!

Last night we visited the renowned Thursford Christmas Spectacular and stayed at the Old Forge. We had read previous reviews on Trip Advisor (after we had already booked) so intrigued and kept an open mind. On arrival greeted warmly by Sarah and shown to our room. Yes slightly smaller than clone like hotels but in keeping with the character of this beautiful building. Clean comfortable cosy accommodation, soft towels and tea making facilities. Ensuite. Everything that is required. Unfortunately we were unable to eat dinner before going to the show as had met old friends for a large lunch but breakfast this morning was very well presented and cooked. Colin and Sarah certainly made this a very enjoyable but sadly short trip but hopefully will return in the summer.
Might add that we will be recommending this and taken a sample of the restaurant for our seafood friends who live nearer

Room Tip: this is a very good quality restaurant with rooms so limited accommodation but cosy and comfortable...
