“Well preserved medieval walls - FREE”
Reviewed 27 March 2014

Murten is a small town that retains most of its medieval wall. We found the wall to be interesting and best of all free. Unlike the wall in Tallinn which charges several Euros to explore. The town was quaint. You could see the cellar steps that most of the shops have. Overall an interesting experience. The only downside is that there isn't much parking.

“Expansive Views”
Reviewed 4 November 2013

From the city's walls, there are expansive views of the local countryside, and other buildings. The steps are easy to navigate and the walkway is covered.

“Beautiful architecture!”
Reviewed 31 October 2013

Murten (or Morat), located on the north-south route (E4/A1) between Berne and Lausanne, is a small medieval town on the shore of Murten Lake (which is quite nice, too). Various attractions have been well preserved, including the castle, the ring wall, the old streets, and the beautiful arcades. It is worth taking some time to walk around, take pictures, and enjoy one of the many little cafés or taverns... Murten is the capital of the Lake District of the canton of Fribourg, so do take time to enjoy the lakes and scenic landscapes in the area, too!

“walk the city walls”
Reviewed 19 September 2013

Easily reached by car or train from Bern or Fribourg, Murten (Morat) is a perfectly conserved medieval town sitting on the lake of the same name. Situated on the French /German language 'barrier and site of the 1476 battle of the Swiss confederation against the duke of Burgundy, time appears to have been on hold on the ramparts of the small city. A bustling market town,it is a great place to visit, walk ramparts, look down ont the lake and drink a glass of local white wine.
Visit the Roman city of Aventicum (Avenches) while there. It is just a few kms.
