“Very friendly”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 July 2014

Very friendly and informal atmosphere. The hosts are just great - they take care of you all the time, they give food advice about restaurants and sightseeings, it's so nice to have a chat with them. Hotel has great location - in the center of Kamari resourt zone, 3 minutes by walk to the beach, really good tavernas are located all around. There are just some minor drawbacks - air-conditioner is rather noisy, and don't forget about mosquitos. Surely you wouldn't expect something luxury and special from 2 stars hotel, but we love the place and the atmosphere and we want to get back in the future

This was the last stay of our island hopping journey in Greece we wanted to relax and chill so chose peaceful kefalos. Kokalakis was more than we could have expected for the price and number of stars that it shows. Other reviewers have made comments which I can only reiterate. Lovely people who really seemed to care that you had a good holiday not pushy or overpowering just warm and friendly and making you feel as comfortable as possible. We were amazed at the number of people who come back year after year and I can see why because it is such an easy resort and hotel to be in for both old and young.

A lot of people come to get married on the little island which they go to by speedboat and looks Like a mama Mia wedding venue - very special. It seems that when they have children they then bring them back year after year to this lovely place.

Just returned last night from our first visit to this lovely place and had to thank others for the honest reviews which influenced our choice.

As expected it is a basic, clean, Greek, family run hotel with a pool and bar lounge area, not a lot of luxurious frills.

What it does have is a lovely warm welcoming atmosphere where you quickly become almost one of this generous, considerate family. (who are available all the time to help, advise, chat, joke, etc) You can use Nitsa's iron, if you feel like ironing, and they will lend you a kettle and mugs for your stay.

I think this hotel would also be suitable and reassuring, for singles who might be wary of staying alone in an anonymous large hotel? Everyone will talk to you here, if you want to be sociable..

If you want riotous late night/early morning drinking and a lively energetic "splashy" pool scene, if it worries you that there is no hot water because it was overcast, if you expect a full English breakfast in your b and b package, if the toilet paper/bin issue worries you, if you need English TV, if you find the local boy racers at night a great nuisance, please don't consider this hotel.

Leave it for the people who love the old Greek way of life (we've been coming for over 30 yrs and feared it was disappearing)...it is alive and well in Kokalakis!

We loved it here and judging by the previous comments and the many returning guests it suits many age groups from 10 mths old to over 70s. Peaceful lazy days ambling around quiet Kefalos, reading by the pool, excellent restaurants nearby, chats with other likeminded guests at breakfast (continental, supplemented by gorgeous bread and Katerina's jam!) and returning after dinner for a nightcap on the patio, often joined by Nitsa, Vassili, and the family.
Beautiful Kamari bay views, just sit and look.

Many thanks to the Kokalakis family and lovely staff (Katerina especially) for a lovely relaxing stay, we'll be back!

Room Tip: We had upstairs, sea view, twin beds, hot sun in morning, bit cooler in evening. Rooms at back had m...

My husband and I stayed at this lovely family hotel for two nights at the beginning of May. We had booked a flotilla holiday sailing from Kos town but wanted to fly out from Bristol airport instead of Gatwick, so we flew out on the Thursday early morning flight instead of the Saturday afternoon one. We booked this holiday through a hotel bookings website after comparing several hotels in the Kefalos area as we had stayed in the same area in 2002.

Even before we arrived, we had an email from Nitsa saying how much she was looking forward to our visit and that our room would be saved for us whatever time we arrived. I emailed back with our flight arrival times and told her that we had booked a hire car and gave her our ETA.

When we arrived we were greeted warmly by Nitsa, given a choice of rooms and then told to sit down on the patio overlooking her lovely swimming pool and relax with a glass of beer and some home made cheese pie smothered in honey. As it was 1 May it was a public holiday and the children had a day off school. Whilst we drank our beer, we chatted to Nitsa's English sister-in-law and her 2 daughters who were visiting and also met Nitsa's two daughters. Nitsa was intrigued by our holiday plans sailing round the Northern and Southern Dodecanese islands and told us that Nisiros was her favourite island.

As we had had a very early start we went for a walk round Kefalos and found that most places were still not yet open for the season or else were closed for the public holiday. When we returned, Nitsa recommended us a couple of tavernas for dinner.

We ate out at the nearest Taverna, called Maria's, which I will review later. After dinner, we had a drink in the bar and talked to Nitsa's husband and some friends.

Our room, although quite small, was very clean and had a lovely view across Kamari Bay. It had air conditioning, a TV and a fridge, a room safe and a balcony with tables and chairs. Nitsa was very apololgetic about the size of the room but as we had wanted twin beds, the choice was limited. We had a bathroom with a hip bath as well as the shower. Our only problem was that the water wasn't very warm but Nitsa's husband explained that as there were so few guests staying in the hotel and as our bathroom was at "the end of the line" plumbing wise, we needed to let the water run for quite a long time before the warm water reached it! We hadn't wanted to waste water but when we did this the warm water came through.

After an early night, we went down for breakfast next morning as soon as the restaurant was open. The buffet food was plentiful and varied and we even had a decent cup of tea! We chose to eat indoors as it was still quite cool but a few people sat outside which would be wonderful when the weather was warmer. We chatted to Katarina(?) who was in charge of the breakfast guests who was also very friendly and welcoming.

We spent the rest of the day driving around the island looking at the sites before returning at dinner time.

Sadly, our time staying at the Kokalakis hotel came to an end. Maria had taken our photos on the first evening to add to her "rogues gallery" and made us promise to keep in touch. We promised to email her a photo of us on our sailing boat. As we were leaving, Nitsa gave us a little present.

We duly sent her a photo of the boat in Kalymnos harbour and will definitely keep in touch. I am sure that if we ever return to Kos the Kokalakis hotel will be our first choice for accommodation. The personal service offered by Nitsa, her family and her staff was second to none and what made our short break so enjoyable.

Thank you Nitsa from the crazy sailing couple, Lyn and Peter!

Room Tip: Now we are older, we prefer single beds but most of the other rooms appear to be larger and some see...

As you approach Kamari bay, you cannot be impressed by the view, the sparkling sea with its beautiful island which has a small beautiful church on it. Just as the road turns towards the beach on the right is the Kokalakis hotel. As you arrive expect a very pleasant greeting from the loverly Nitsa and her family. Your in for a relaxing stay. As you enter the building on the right is an impressive bar with a good selection of drink. The rooms are typical Greek, clean and comfortable, some have cookers and fridge. In the morning expect a good selection for breakfast, yoghurt and honey, fresh figs, toast, grapes, and cereals and beefing looked after by the very pleasant jolly and hard working Katrina. At the front of the hotel is a pool bar, with a covered area to sit relax and sip a cold beer or two or you can relax on a sun bed, sip on a cold drink to quench your thirst whilst the warm sun caresses your skin, as you work on a golden tan. You can also relax to the sound of the sea which is in view from the pool area. It's central to all the local Taverna's and bars. The food here is the best in the world, fresh, tasty, and a treat for the taste buds. You can also take a train ride up to Kefalos, which towers above watch over the bay with it's nightly lit fortress. In the evening you can order a favourite drink and relax in the cool air in the seats outside the hotel, whilst meeting the friendly locals or making new friends. Sadly all things come to an end, and I am sure you will leave having been well looked after by Nitsa and her family, with fond memories and like ourselves looking forward to a return.
