“Needs a major refurbishment.”
Reviewed 2 October 2013

We came here because it was relatively cheap for the area and now we now why.
Rooms were in poor condition, we had to move because the bathroom and toilet had not been cleaned. Even in the next room the cupboards were dilapidated and the curtains would not close. The main restaurant on the Saturday was closed and so we had to eat in the Orangery which was lacking in any sort of atmosphere. Food looked microwaved? The bar area was small and had a very poor choice of wine. Even at breakfast they ran out of some of the basic items. The staff did their best but they were mainly very young people who did not seem to be able to cope. Outside the gardens were well maintained, but the out buildings and golf course seem to be run down, closed or not used.
The great pity is that this could be a superb hotel in a good location but obviously needs a fortune spending on it to modernise it.
I have stayed in much better discount hotels who charge half the price.

Room Tip: Check that the restaurant is open and the room you stay in is clean before you stay here.

We only stayed for one night after a formal dinner but found it perfectly acceptable. Yes we have stayed in better but we have also paid a lot more than we were charged here - we could not have bed & breakfasted in a guest house for this price. The hotel is corporate in feel but that reflects what I assume are its major markets. Our room was fine, breakfast was good and the setting is delightful.

I would not recommend booking this "conference centre" it was a shambles from start to finish.

Myself and colleges all struggled for network signal across 3 different networks, we managed to make calls outside within the grounds but not in the building. Out of the 53 rooms in the main hotel we were allocated to stay in "the cottage" and believe me this was no quaint cottage. It had 4 rooms separate from the mail hotel, as single females travelling alone we wouldn't have chosen to stay on ground level in an old separate building with no signal or WIFI in "the cottage".

The cottage absolutely stank to high hell of musty old moth eaten furnishings, it made a charity shop smell fresh it was so stale smelling almost unbearable.

The bar: opens at 6pm - can't serve a chilled wine until at least 7pm as during the day the wine is left out at room temp and they don't start chilling drinks until they open and only have 1 small fridge. The bar doesn't accept card payments and has lipstick stained glasses.

The hotel manager said he felt "insulted" by our negative comments that were in fact just cold hard truths. Food was disgusting. No compensation offered in any form not a soft drink nothing. We were charged full price. No hot running water in the cottage or 2 main rooms.

I would never stay here ever again. You have been warned.

We booked this on the spur of the moment, the grounds are beautiful and the hotel while eclectic is nice in a quirky kind of way!
We were given a huge room with ensuite which was clean and serviceable but there was bad damp in the bathroom with wallpaper peeling off - not a biggie but a little extra effort ant the room would have been better for it - it had been that way for a long time!
Unfortunately for us there was a wedding on - they seem to cater for weddings every weekend as the reception is given over to promoting them - this meant that we were restricted to the dining room or our bedroom! No bar facilities and when we had finished dinner we had to stay in the dining area and were brought drinks while the staff laid out breakfast around us!
Now for the restaurant - do not expect quality food here - think greasy spoon cafe - nothing wrong with it, perfectly good but not what you expect in this type of location - think ham egg and chips, chilli con carne made with the cheapest mince - the sort of food in a cafe you would pay £2.95 for in a cafe but you are adding a £10 to it here!
Loved the location, but be prepared to be a second class citizen if there is a wedding on, and if you like road side cafe food then this is the poshest you will find!
It's an experience but not one I want to repeat!

The hotel is a hodge-podge of architectural styles and could do with a make-over. Decor was tired though room was clean and comfortable. The grounds looked much better cared for - lovely gardens.
Breakfast was mainly good, buffet style though cooked breakfast was basic and not hot (cold plates didn't help).
A reasonable place to stay and located well for our needs but little character. Functional but not special.

We attended a friends wedding this weekend. The staff were very helpful. We had a late booking, so were told that we could only have a small double. That was absolutly fine, it was only my husband and I. The bed was comfortable, the sheets were clean, the bathroom was clean and adequate. The bar was very reasonable. A good time was had and we were both comfortable.
The food was great....breakfast was perfect.
The only down side was that the WiFi was very poor. Couldn't fault he staff o the hotel itself!!!
Thank you for a very enjoyable weekend!!!

Stayed here for a friends wedding 24/25 August. Hotel looks lovely with beautiful grounds and the wedding itself went well apart from the weather. The room was a good size, exceptionally clean and looked like it had recently been decorated but the walls were very thin and you could here everything the neighbours were saying! The coffee/tea provisions were inadequate for 2 people and the door handle was falling off the front door. The wedding reception food was lovely but we passed on breakfast as that did not look too appealing. The main positive was the bar prices which were very reasonable for a hotel.
