“Bad hotel + Terrible staff”
Reviewed 3 March 2014

We stayed in the hotel for 9 days. It's FAR from everything. Downtown area is about 25 minutes away + there is absolutely nothing around the hotel. Husband got sick and I needed to go to a market, had to jump in cab to go to closest place (15 minutes away).
Carpet in our room was disgusted. Tv had terrible reception every single time /day. Food in the hotel is bad.
Majority of staff is completely RUDE. Agree with other reviewer who said on arrival the reception staff were fine. After 2 days in hotel, I asked about information to a lady in the reception (short, dark hair) She didn't even looked up to answer and kept me telling in a very rude tone that I should go to "Corte Ingles" for everything I need!. Seriously? We missed breakfast a few days and we had to get coffee at the restaurant/bar area in hotel. The waiter was not polite. He looked at us and said "yes?" to take our order. My husband ordered coffee and he didn't say a word at any time. he brought the coffee and said: "room number?" Just terrible. Staff seem to be hating everything and everyone. Very disappointed. Would never recommend the hotel.

I stayed in this Hotel during the WMC. As could be expected, price was an absolute rip off, unjustifiable by any means. Hotel is mediocre and worn, staff lacks training and attitude, breakfast is quite bad, location poor. At least I had a community of ants in my room, so I could study their behaviour while non sleeping due to other guests room parties.

I would like to follow-up on our recent stay at the Abba Garden Hotel in Barcelona.
Although we had a wonderful room with a great breakfast at the Abba Garden we were EXTREMELY disappointed to find that our last day we had NO CLEANING SERVICE on our room.
On the morning of Sept28 the cleaning staff asked if we wanted the room cleaned yet.. we said no, as we were going to breakfast.
Then we went out for the day and came back at 10pm to find NOTHING was done to the room, towels not replaced or even the bed made.
The front office insisted that it was if fact cleaned, because it said so on the computer. (Towels were as least replaced at that point)
I understand that there are communication issues with language, but THERE IS NO EXCUSE for a room not being cleaned under ANY circumstances..!!!
We really felt that the cleaning staff did this intentionally, because we did not allow them to get in when THEY found it convenient and then let the office think that it had been completed.
It is very unfortunate that this wonderful hotel left us with such a terrible last night.

My sister and I went here in August 2013 for 4 days and got a good deal. We realised that the reason why the hotel was so cheap because it is so far from Barcelona and the majority of staff hate the guests!

On arrival the reception staff were fine and all staff spoke good English, so if you do have the displeasure of staying here, don't let them fool you that they can't speak English like they tried to with us 2 days into the trip.

The hotel is lovely, well maintained, clean, and has good facilities because of the pool and steam/sauna rooms on the lower ground floor. The wine and beer was very cheap (1.3 euro's for a wine / 3 euros for a pint).

However, I think this is the best I can say about the hotel. The hotel doesn't have a lot of atmosphere and I wouldn't recommend it if you want to actually see the City of Barcelona, as you would need to leave very early to walk 15mins to the metro then another 20 minute journey on the unbearable hot metro trains. The food was not good. We tried a variety of things from the bar menu - but only chips were the edible item really. My sister ordered a salad, which arrived with blank gunk on it which looked like (but weren't) slugs. When we asked the waitress what it was, she said 'ugggh' took it away but then we asked her what the kitchen staff said, she brushed us off very rudely.

Which brings me onto the staff. We met around 5 members of staff whilst there, and there were only 2 that were polite. The rest of them seemed to dislike English people particularly, but didn't limit their rudeness to just English people. They were rude, (talking to each other in Spanish whilst you were waiting for a drink, making jokes about other guests, etc). One of them did apologise but the worst of the bunch was a jumped up waitress on a power trip who just seemed to hate everyone and everything was an inconvenience.

Bottom line - don't stay here unless you have a strong stomach, good walking shoes and you're not worried about being given a hard time by the staff.

Room Tip: Just don't stay here!!!

We (2 adults one child) stayed at this hotel for 6 nights for our 'budget' trip to Barcelona.
The hotel is perfecly reasonable and provides everything you would expect a hotel to provide.
Upon our arrival we were greeted by friendly knowledgable staff, as should be expected.
The room we had (standard) was ok, clean and tidy and reasonably sized. They provide a 'wash pack' including toothbrush and paste which is nice but not necessary. We did not have a balcony and were tucked away in the far corner of the hotel on floor 2 (room 209) but we didn't spend time in the hotel enough to let it bother us.
The air-con is a god send in the August temperatures and, although pretty antiquated, worked perfectly well for our needs. We had a nice large bathroom with a 1950's hairdryer, bidet and phone attached to the wall! but as I said, suited us fine. The mini bar was extremely overpriced! but the use of the fridge was, again, very welcome! The room had a safe (included in room price) which we made use of. WiFi is available in the hotel lobby and rooms, they change the password and log on every 24hrs which you have to get from the reception desk and the connection isn't exactly reliable, but still, it was nice to have.
The only downside about our room was the filthy carpet. Everything else was reasonably clean - it is an old hotel and cheap so we didn't expect contemporary minimalism but the carpet was covered in stains and pretty yucky!
Beds were firm but comfortable.
Maid service was everyday but hit and miss whether she decided to change the towels or not, despite the instruction to leave towels on the floor if we wanted them changed. Same with the bin. It was emptied daily but whether it got a bag in it or not was random.
Clean bed sheets everyday was nice though.

The hotel charges 16 Euro per person for breakfast. We tried it on the first day (as we hadn't sussed the area out yet) and although it was very well presented with a good choice of nice food it certainly isn't worth the extra £30 a day! (kids are not chargeable) We found a 'nearby' supermarket and brought back yoghurts and croissants each evening for a makeshift meal every morning after that.

The hotel has a 'gym' and sauna/steam room. I didn't personally use them but my partner made use of the fitness room which had about 4 machines in it but was adequate for his use.
The outdoor pool is a lovely addition to the hotel and is perfectly sized for the size of the hotel. It is fresh water though (not chlorinated) which meant a lot of flies shared the water with us!
About 10 or so sunbeds around the pool were enough for our stay though I imagine at busy times nowhere near enough.

We did not use the bar (after reviews on here about the service and price) nor the restaurant so cannot review them.

You will get charged a 'city tax' in addition to your bill (whether you have pre paid or not) this is only 1E per adult per day but be aware that this will need to be paid upon leaving.

As all the other reviews on here already state; the hotel is way away from the centre and nowhere near any amenities. It is right next door to a childrens hospital and nothing else. The nearest supermarket is near the Nou Camp which is a good 20-25 minute walk away. We did find a cafe inside the hospital which is useful for snacks but they don't speak much english so has a bit of a language barrier if you don't speak spanish. Plenty of vending machines in there though. The hospital were building an outdoor cafe when we were there so maybe it will be finished by the time you visit.

As for transport. Get the A1 or A2 Aerobus from the airport, it will terminate in Placa de Catalunya which is the centre square for transport in the city. From there you can get the L3 green line metro to Zona Universitat (end of the line) and walk about 15 minutes up hill to the hotel (which is what we did and were very hot and sweaty by the time we got there!) or find the stop for the number 22 bus which is on one of the streets off the main centre square, which will again terminate at Av. Esplugues which is right next to the hospital and a short (uphill) walk up to the hotel. The 22 then heads right back into the centre, taking about 30 minutes each way. Once we found this line we continued to use it. It also passes the tram stop to Tibidabo (the amusement park) and stops nearby Parc Guell on the way to the centre so is quite useful if you want to visit those areas.

I would highly recommend the Bus Turistic if you are visiting for a site-seeing holiday. We purchased a two day ticket that covered all three routes. It is incredibly useful as not only do the routes take you to the most sought after tourist destinations it will get you about the city hop on hop off style between 9am and 8pm with all the info you need. You also get a little discount book for various places around the city which is great. We found this cheaper than getting the BCN card which is another option for transport around the city.

The T10 card is very useful as it is one ticket that can be used for 10 trips for less than 10E (standard single trips are 2E each) BUT, as we found out, all 10 trips must be used within 1hr 15mins so don't think you can use it in the morning then on your way back in the evening. It is probably most useful if there are a group of you travelling together as anyone can use the ticket (just keep using it until all 10 trips have been used up)

Tibidabo is an experience. A 100 year old amusement park which sits high above the city with fantastic views and old and new rides. We went first thing on a Sunday morning (thinking it would get busy quite quickly) The park opens at 11am but the main atrractions not til midday. I recommend going via the Tram Blau then using the Funicular (discount vouchers available in the bus turistic book) as it all adds to the experience. Get to the park by 11 to experience the site-seeing rides and church then use the rest of the day for the rest of the park. It is open til 11pm and I imagine the late afternoon and evening are the busiest times (when it isn't so hot) As we found out, the morning isn't so busy, we got there when the rides opened and went four times round on both the roller coaster and log flume as there weren't many people there yet! It is a great place - not particularly cheap, but worth a visit.

All in all the city is what we went to visit, not the hotel. So it was perfectly reasonable for our requirements. If you do decide to stay at this hotel (it is good value if you don't eat or drink there!) take your walking shoes! It's far away from the madding crowd, peaceful and servicable.
Just quite a bit out of the way and all up hill!!

Room Tip: Request a view and/or balcony if you want one. The old building means noise does travel. Fingers c...

The hotel is very clean and we found the staff extremely helpful. Room a reasonable size and had everything we needed especially in the bathroom. Only downside for us was how far out of the city it was but of course it was cheaper to stay than in the centre. We found out the 68 bus stops just around the corner avoiding the steep walk up the hill on the way home. It leaves Placa Catalunya (main square) every 30 mins and takes about 30 mins. We did not find the metro any quicker but we often walked down the hill to catch metro into town, bus back. We also found airport bus to Terminal 1 or 2 leaving the same square every 5mins (EUR 5.90) so saved a lot of money using that. Taxi from the airport cost EUR36. Get a 10 ride pass for all transport which can be used by several people (just validate it the right number of times). Much cheaper than individual tickets. Pool at hotel was lovely but could do with more sunbeds. Food in restaurant limited. Overall we felt very comfortable at this hotel and enjoyed our stay.
