If you are in Catalonia I recommend a visit to the unusual and beautiful volcanic area of Garrotxa, centered around the town of Olot. Here you can hike through magical beech forests winding around ancient lava flows, stumble across a yogurt factory in the middle of the forest, and climb into the crater of an ancient volcano to find a medieval chapel!
And should you get hungry in the area you must eat at La Fageda Restaurant, which you will find in the campground of the same name, just 2 km east of Olot on the road to Santa Pau. We have stayed in this campground twice, having made the trip down from our summer home in France purely for the pleasure of eating at this restaurant. Their lunch menu, including bread, wine and dessert, is excellent, featuring a wonderful mushroom risotto, a very substantial goat cheese salad, and Catalan specialties such as sausage and pork dishes.
