Hostal Sant Bernat
Ranked #1 of 4 Olot B&B and Inns
Reviewed 17 November 2010

We picked this hotel because it was the only one at the time of booking which offered triple sharing for our 3 teenage boys. It was a bit of a shocker after a night in the Parador de Cardona but then it is an unfair comparison. Hostal Sant Bernat is really very basic; room decor and floors were old and tired but the beds were clean albeit narrow, there were hot showers and airconditioning but no hairdryers. There was a hilarious notice in the bathroom proclaiming that "The towels are the property of this cheap hotel". Indeed!!! The walls are very thin, so if you have noisy neighbours that may be a problem. But if you're in Garrotxa for the trekking, this would be more than sufficient for your needs; even luxurious, compared to camping in the park. The lady at the reception and the waiter at the restaurant were very friendly, helpful and kind. Our room had a small terrace that overlooked the valley and lower elevations of Olot. Meals at the hotel were generous and hearty!! The cost of an extra portion of bacon and eggs was even waived - what a surprise indeed! Truly hospitable and great value for money. Would I do a return stay? Not likely cos there are other options out there.

It is indeed classified under B&Bs and not Hotels, but is more of a youth hostel; good for people who look for a cheap one night stay, only problem is that it's almost as expensive as a decent hotel (71 EUR for a small room with 3 beds, B&B). Unpleasant neighbourhood (but close to the volcanic hills of Olot), bad smell in hallways, paper-thin walls, squeaky beds, shabby blankets and sheets with holes, extra payments for air-condition and TV. Staff is friendly, but knows only little English.

My wife booked by telephone, specifically asking for a double bed. Even though the booking could not be entered into the computer at that moment, she was assured the double bed would be reserved - "don´t worry", they said. When we arrived the next day no double bed had been reserved for us, and the receptionist told us that no, she didn´t think that we could have asked for a double bed because they are always very careful about such things. Now, dear fellow traveller, how annoying is that? The receptionist clearly had a problem in admitting mistakes. Our en-suite room was clean, simple and basic, with a small but functioning shower, a spectacularly noisy flushing toilet (open the cold tap to stop the screaming vibrations), had thin walls (but our neighbours were mercifully quiet at night, so no problem there), a nice balcony, and splendid views east over the local Strombolian volcanic hills. The evening meal was simple but very good, with as much wine and water as you wanted and friendly family service, and the breakfasts are excellent. For 65 euros for 2 people half board one cannot complain about value for money. The hostal is on the edge of town, 10 minutes walk from the centre and bus station (90 mins direct service to Barcelona with Teisa). Olot is a bit unkempt, unplanned, and in need of some repair, but has its moments - there are pedestrian streets in the old centre, some fine modernist buildings, and a lot of shoe shops and cake shops. We tried a few bars, which were nothing special, then after being ripped off in the Bar Crocodrilo (2.70 for a bottle of Estrella Damm: those are Las Ramblas prices!) headed back to the hostel, which has a homely little bar/restaurant (1.50 for that same Estrella Damm). But you go to Olot not for the town but to walk in the volcanoes: start with a trip up the (poorly signposted) Montsacopa Volcano, which is immediately west of the hostel. The main event however is a walk SE through the Fageda d´en Jorda following Route 3 to the Can Serra parking then anticlockwise around Route 10 via Santa Margarita and Croscat volcanoes. Pick up a map from the tourist office (but don´t trust it fully) and allow 5-6 hours for the walk. The friendly girl in the tourist office correctly told us this was a lovely walk, but omitted to mention that a recent windstorm had made the path almost impassable in places, so it was quite an adventure. Neither can you always trust the signposts, so take a compass.
