What a wonderful experience we have just had -spending Christmas with Thomson at the Snow Princess Hotel - From the moment we took off from Manchester Airport on Boxing day Thomson made the whole experience just a joy. Some tips for you - make sure you take gloves & Hats in your hand luggage just for the change in temperature although more suitable gloves as well as snow suits, woollen socks and boots are provided before your adventure starts. Thank you to our wonderful elves Cranberry, Egg Nog Rob who couldn't have done enough for you in service and entertainment. Hotel very warm and cosy , staff very helpful you only had to ask - we asked for hotter gravy and we got it no complaints here about the food!! Taster trips on the snow mobile and huskey sleigh ride, Reindeer sleigh ride- The glistening snow in the twilight hours all wonderful memories

Stayed at the Snow Princess Hotel & was expecting the worst based on some of the previous reviews, particularly as room 101 was mentioned as being awful. Well, my son (6 years old) & I had room 101 & it wasn't as bad as some of the reviews stated. It's situated next to Reception on the ground floor & I found it was really easy for nipping back to the room to put your outdoor clothes on quickly. There wasn't too much noise but I did hear the tractor clearing the road outside Reception early one morning so if you're a light sleeper then this may cause a problem. The room was clean & very warm & the bed's top covers were 'made-up' daily but the bottom sheets were ignored & left wrinkled - interesting bed-making concept. One of the towels in the bathroom had holes in it but overall, it wasn't anything that really spoilt the holiday. Loved the sauna in the bathroom too. The food was plentiful & warm &, as I don't like hot food (you have to wait too long to eat it), that wasn't a problem for me, plus as you were on a time schedule for the excursions, you had to eat your meal really quickly anyway. The hotel staff were really polite and helpful & I can't recommend them enough. They found an adaptor to fit the American socket for charging my camera battery & rang the bus company when my son left his gloves on the bus & they were returned within half an hour to Reception - now that's what I call service. The Thomson reps were excellent & made it very clear to the children that they could throw snowballs at them whenever they saw them. My son duly adhered to that at every possible opportunity, to the point where he was picked up & swung around by Ross & rolled in the snow by Snowflake. What better fun could a child have than that?
The suits, hats, gloves, socks & boots kept us both warm but we did layer-up underneath them & I will tell you what we wore as I found this particularly helpful from another review. I wore 1 pair knee high thermal socks, 1 pair ski socks, thermal leggings, jeans, thermal long sleeved vest, long sleeved top, Shetland woollen jumper & a thick front zipped fleece jacket. My son was similarly attired except that he wore normal nylon ankle socks instead of knee length socks & was as warm as toast. The 2 hour excursions for the reindeer & husky sleigh rides & skidoo driving were expensive but I found the taster sessions were well organised & were just long enough for experiencing them. I found steering the skidoo for 10 minutes really heavy on my shoulders so doubt I could have driven one for 2 hours anyway. I did visit the Snow Hotel which although expensive was an exceptional experience & would highly recommend it, particularly as my son drove a skidoo on his own, which he loved.
The visit to Santa was definitely the highlight of our visit & my son was so overwhelmed he could only stop & stare speechlessly at him, especially as Santa was reading the letter he'd written (& hadn't finished writing yet) & he couldn't work out how he'd got it - it was fantastic to see. Santa was very realistic not only in his dress but also his accented English which was just as you would imagine him to sound like, so he was totally believable - even I believed in him & that's saying something.
I would highly recommend this 4 day Lapland Santa trip as it truly is a holiday to remember.

We have just returned from this hotel it was immaculate clean and well maintained.
Family rooms not suitable for small children due to steep stairs to second beds however fine for older ones. Rooms very warm and comfy with an endless supply of tea and coffee in room also free chocolates on arrival.
Staff very friendly and nothing to much trouble fantastic service.
Food not great but didn't spoil our stay.
Will definitely be back next year.

We dined at Ylläskaltio Hotel`s restaurant during Easter holiday. They have buffet table with a good selection of starters, two main courses (meat and fish) and, sadly, only one sweet. Well, at least this was the situation when we dined there. Starters were delicious, and whitefish with mushroom topping was acceptable. Finnish pancake was not amiss albeit nothing special.
My spouse chose to have a la carte dinner and ordered sautéed reindeer.
The dining room is spacious with mountain view. Tablecloth had some stains.
Price per person for the buffet was 27€, drinks not included.

We have just returned from a week staying in a log cabin in the lovel village of Akasolompolo with half board option at the Kalito hotel. We travelled trough Inghams (destination lapland) who were very efficient, friendy and organised.
We prebooked our excursions at the time of booking but had the chance to add a cross country ski taster and change our daytime snowmobile to a northern lights trip at the welcome meeting, word of warning if snowmobiling you need your driving licenec, did not have this so needed to ring and pay for fax from the DVLA.
Cabin was beautiful, clean and very comfortable. We had our own sauna and even tried running out into the snow afterwards, it was in a quiet residential area about 10 min to centre of the town but pleasant walk and also nice dark areas for watching the norithern lights which we managed to see twice one time for > 1.5hrs ! Absolutely breath taking.
As mentioned we took up several excursions first was the reindeer safari cannot recommend enough, cold but expected as outside so wrap up warm, great ride followed by yummy berry juice, cake and a chance to pet and feed the reindeer, also a lovely little shop with good value peices compared to the gift shops.
Next was the husky safari again great fun being able to mush your own team, around a 10km circuit, lovely friendly dogs and a rather brave cat, again plenty berry juice and biscuits to help warm up round the fire.
Snow mobile trip was good, shared so 10km each, easy to learn as a complete beginner sadly was too cloudy for northern lights but lovely stop half way with more berry juice and chance to talk about local beliefs about the lights. As mentioned remember driving licence but overall reps and DVLA very helpfull in solving this problem.
One definate highlight was the night in the snow hotel, really beautiful place and took sooo many photographs. Had a drnk in the ice bar from an ice glass - cloudberry liquor - which was not only fun but delicious. Overnight was actually very comfortable and at one point slightly too warm in the sleeping bags despite the room being about -5. Would recommend at least an evening visit here to anyone.
Our final excursion was a cross country skiing lesson, my friend adapted to this very well, I however invested a new sport of cross country falling over, lots of fun and could not fault the instructor for his determination to get me going but dont think I will every be a natural. Unfortunate at the tracks are very well maintained and extensive.
On our 'days off' we explored on snow shoes across the frozen Akasolompolo lake, walked to a near by lake further out fo the village no accessible by car which had the most welcome cafe at the other side, found some great souveniers and also spent a day at the otehr side of the Yllas fell at the ski cnetre going up and down to the cafes at the top on board the gondola.
The village itself easy quite small, easy to walk about and has everything you may need. the supermaket is well stocked and we can recommend the Trip fruit juice and smoked reindeer! We also had a meal out at Jullis which was very tasty but the portions are huge!!!!
The food at the Kalito we found excellent, breakfast was a hot and cold buffet and most nights dinner was a 3 course set menu with the option of a meat or fish maincourse. The final night was a buffet of traditional Finnish food. We did not have a bad meal and I am very glad we walked over the the hotel (about 5-10mins) to enjoy this rather than trying to make our own food.
Will definately come back to this area, not only is it beautiful but very friendly and loads to do, never board.......

Room Tip: avoid row 25 on Monarch flights these have no window and much less leg room than the other rows, onl...

We had a truely magical, amazing holiday. As others have said the food was a let down, but there was always plenty of it and always something you could eat, the hot meals were usually luke warm. this was the only negative point and certainly didn't ruin our holiday. The hotel was clean and very hot, had to turn heating off in our room and open windows most nights.Staff were always polite. prices for alcohol were expensive, but all seems expensive there even in the supermarket. With the seven day trip there was a snowmobile trip, a visit to santas house and a trip to the ice hotel included, also tasters of husky ride and reindeer sleigh ride. i was expecting taster on snowmobile but it was a good long ride, all in all took about 2 hours and was fantastic, i had already booked a snowmobile trip but was more than happy to go again at the end of the week. Ice hotel (village) is absolutely fantastic, every room you go into you are amazed, it's like walking through an art gallery. We booked seperate huskies and reindeer rides, which are expensive trips but i'm so glad we did them. First huskie trip was a bit of a disaster. we arrived there and was supposed to go on first group but they ran out of sleighs so had to wait for next group, then told would go on 3rd group. by this time it was past 5 o clock, pitch black and we were freezing cold from hanging around so long, all the rest of group went home on coach. the huskies were exhuasted and would only move if my husband pushed the sleigh so he pushed us around the whole way. We complained to thomson rep on returning, in taxi, to hotel and she was brilliant, got it sorted by next morning for us to do return trip, which was fantastic, all went well and we had amazing time. we tried cross country skiing , which was fun and only stopped playing in snow to eat or sleep. would love to go back one day. If you are thinking about going... Do it, it is an amazing experience. overall, thomson were great, elves were brill, hotel was fine, food was slightly dodgy, but heyho we all managed to eat all week. and one more thing sauna in bathroom was an experience with family of 4 in it. great laugh although slightly sweaty. great time had by all, 2 adults 14 year old son and 10 year old daughter.
