Visited Poro on 27'th of January 2012. Service was fast and professional, and the food (Perch filets for me) excellent. There was even live music as Poro participates the annual Ylläs Jazz & Blues festival as one of the venues - all in all we had a great evening.

“Delicious food”
Reviewed 8 January 2012

We had our last evening meal at this lovely restaurant, were served promptly and in a very friendly way despite the restaurant being full, ate some lovely local food (marinated trout, reindeer meat and liver) and were very satisfied with the wine on offer.

“Perfect Poro : Taste The Country”
Reviewed 29 December 2011

We spotted this restaurant from our skidoos as we headed to the forest - and it looked beautiful. Wooden construction and Christmas trees all lit up outside... I had noticed it previously in a flyer in our log cabin but had been inclined to avoid it due to the flyer that referred to it as one with a Santaland/Christmasland (or something like that!) that implied it might be a bit tacky...

The restaurant takes its form from a certain local Lappish style with tables laid out around the place with the centre left free (in old teepees/equivalent constructions normally there's be a fire in the middle). The building is beautifully made with old wood and has numerous artsy/craftsy touches and items all over.

It was very easy to relax in this environment and the service was quick, cheery and friendly; happy to talk; happy to not talk, as you wished.

The menu is in a wooden book (traditional) and has a couple of set menus and a-la carte. Local produce and traditional foods are strongly represented and highly recommended.

We enjoyed reindeer in various forms for our mains plus small almost 'tapas' style starters (local foods not Spanish!) and a delicious dessert.

We avoided the wine, for no particular reason, and had the local pear cider to drink - which was delicious. My local beer was less good - but ok (it was probably my fault as the beer invariably tasted better after some form of exercise in the day - you gotta earn it!).

There is a gift/souvenir shop attached along a wooden corridor, albeit the two do have separate entrances and the location of the connection means there is no disturbance one to the other. The souvenirs were generally better than most we saw, including some lovely baubles now on our tree, and so is worth a visit if you're over that way.

From our lodge (Sapara 2 - near the Kaltio hotel) Poro is an easy 10-15 minute walk; double that if you're at the Akas hotel.

We LOVED it here - for a touch of tradition and calm, couples especially, this is a lovely place to eat, no more expensive than other restaurants we tried in Akaslompole, definitely, however, the best.

We spent just under 100 Euro for 2; 3 courses and drinks and water. Expensive, but not excessive, and not dissimilar to other restaurants doing a-la carte style dining.
