where can i start....flight was great with Monarch, got suited and booted at the airport, and arrived at the hotel, which with the cabins scattered around it,is in the middle of no-where....brilliant!log cabin was a 2 minute walk away, and had everything we needed...gotta say that we had no problems with the food at all,and being a couple who enjoy a turkish style breakfast,it was fine.Lunch and evening meals were also great, and our 6 yr old daughter was able to eat no problem. The Reps, aylesbury("Dixon"),Jules( G & T ) and Kirsty claus, were great....helpful,funny,approachable.You need to throw yourself into it,sing-alongs etc....we had a flurry of snow xmas morn, and the temperature was only about -7 which was great...we enjoyed the sauna in the cabin, and took tea and coffe stuff,as well as bits for our litlun...having said yhat, you won't go hungry..all in all,the most memorable xmas, for us and our daughter, trouble faulting it unless i were to be really picky...a magical experience..

We stayed here a family of two adults and one child from 22nd to the 27th December and booked a Cosmos holiday.
The Hotel:
Location is perfect in a forest in the middle of nowhere, sledge run at back of hotel snow covered trees everywhere looks like Narnia. We stayed in a room pretty basic has a mezzanine floor for kids to sleep in (very steep stairs) a shower(good pressure) and maids cleaned everyday if you wanted (changed towels and made bed). There were no tea or coffee making facilities we took our own kettle. A drying cupboard for your snow suits. It was full board and the food was sometimes ok sometimes not the Gala dinner was not Gala. Breakfast was cereal, toast, ham and cheeses or some burnt streaky bacon and beans. Lunch was a bit hit and miss as was dinner. It was basically food to fill you up lots of potatoes always a soup and bread plus another dish spag Bol etc. Always tea and coffee at meal times aswell as the infamous berry juice. Bar prices were dear as you would expect. The hotel staff were very helpful whenever needed.
The cosmos reps actively encouraged people to sign up for the extra excursions which were a bit pricey. We had tasters of snowmobile driving ( pretty good) husky rides a little quick and reindeer rides (blink and you missed it) as well as a visit to santas summer house and santas village.
We payed to do the extra snowmobile rides(more for adults) and the snow village (interesting). These two came to the total same price as doing the reindeer ride which was very expensive.
I felt most of the cosmos reps were a bit disinterested once Xmas day was over and on the extra excursions I felt they wanted to be anywhere but there. Although having said that Elspeth always made you feel welcome and nothing was too much.
We had an amazing Xmas inspite of the food, the setting and the experience will never be forgotten. Just seeing the childrens faces when they see Santa irons out any problems you have. We loved every bit of it from building a snowman to riding sledges and seeing reindeer walking out of the forest.
My advice would be to take plenty of snack food crisps, cereal bars and a kettle. Be prepared to be very tired and don't expect too much from the food.

Christmas 2011 booked with Monarch.
Well organised for arrival and check-in. We were staying in a log cabin which was about a 5 minute walk from the main hotel.
Set in the pine forest with every amenity you could want. 3 bedrooms (1 double, 1 bunk room and 1 triple). The triple is up a steep ladder so be aware with young children although there is a safety gate at the top. Sauna attached to the bathroom was lovely. Kitchen and sitting area are smallish but as there were only 3 of us it was fine. If you filled this cabin with 7 people it will be cramped. The kitchen has full cooker, micro, dishwasher, fridge -freezer so everything you will need. Well stocked with cutlery etc.
The bathroom has shower only with good hot water and power. There is a drying cabinet also in there which is excellent for drying wet clothes.
The reason for giving this only 3 stars is because of the main hotel where you have meals. The food quite frankly is dreadful, with the so called christmas gala feast being the worst meal we have ever had. Childrens' menu consists of something and chips at every meal, and the adults meal has no choice and was usually potatoes and some unidentifiable meat in gravy or sauce. It was usually only tepid unless you were there as soon as they brought it out. There was no sign of any local dishes at all which was very disappointing especially as other hotel guests (non monarch) had a completely different menu. Monarch obviously feel this is what british people want!!
Monarch have organised excursions for extra fees and these are very expensive. Certainly to visit the snow village you would be better going by taxi. The snow mobile safari was good and a decent length and probably safer than doing it yourself as you could easily get lost on the snowmobile tracks. for 3 adults though it was approx £300.
The nearest small supermarket is 3 km away so walkable if you can brave it.
The larger shops in the next village are about 15 mins away by taxi or bus - taxi was €30 each way though!
Overall, don't stay in the hotel,as according to other travellers it is very basic, take as much food as you can with you and be preared to spend a lot when you get there.

We stayed for three days in a log cabin which come with an open fireplace, sauna and bedrooms away from early rising children (ours were 5 and 9 years old). The staff were fantastic and fun, Santa and his helpers were great. Meals at the hotel, a short snowball fight from the cabin, were always good and well prepared. If you intend to do all that you can (reindeer sled, dog sled, snowmobiles, Santa's workshop, etc as we did) then expect to be very tired.....but happy! Santa arriving on a reindeer pulled sleigh on the last night and giving out presents, individually selected for each child, was absolutely magical! Thanks to all involved.

Have just returned from a week in the Yllas Rinne hotel where we learned to ski. Ski school was fabulous and booking with Neilson gave us an extra day of equipment hire and lift pass for the final day. As beginner skiiers we found plenty of easy slopes to get us started at the resort. It was low season, so not many people in the hotel or on the slopes.

Hotel - rooms were basic, but clean and warm with nice views over the forest. Location is a little out of the way for downhill skiiers, as the resort is about a 50 minute walk away. However, for cross country skiiers it is ideal. Facilities (eg sauna) do not have advertised opening times, and appeared to be a little random at times. The hotel itself is quite isolated, and we agree with the distance of local shops.

Food - breakfast was standard hotel fayre, and evening meals were good quality but very limited in choice. The only complaint was evening meals were between 5 and 7, but the slopes were open until 7, so you did miss out on some skiing time. There is no option to purchase lunch at the hotel.

Bus - the ski bus collects from the hotel directly to the resort once every 2 hours (from 9.30am) and costs 3 euros per person each way. You can buy a weekly pass for 15 euros, which is well worth it. We did find this a little inconvenient as the day was centred around the bus timetable.

All in all we had a very enjoyable holiday, and will return to Finland, although probably not to this hotel.

Stayed at Hotel Yllasrinne and were positively surprised! Hotel is basic but comfortable and the food is good (small choice on buffet but lots of homemade things e.g. cake for desert). Good quality of meat and fish served.

Perfect location for cross-country skiing as track network starts right behind the hotel. Flood light tracks, well maintained and lots of easy runs! Location therefore much better here then up in the resort where the other hotels are. Skiers are better served up the hill (e.g. Saaga) to be close to lifts but ski bus goes to Hotel Yllasrinne and stops in front.

Supermarket and a few restaurants/pub a good 30-40 min walk away but doable (alternative is bus - watch times). Supermarket in village Yllasjarvi is cheaper than (v small) supermarket up near Saaga Hotel. Also found that sometimes price difference if booking tours/activities - so shop around, Yllas Adventures in Yllasjarvi offer a better deal on some trips than for example Arctic Safaris up in the Sport resort (near Saaga Hotel).

From Hotel you can do walks (one of the huts that is near the x-country and snowmobile track) is also reachable on foot which we discovered at the end of our trip. If you are lucky you might see some reindeer there as they have a feeding area in front.

Went in low season in January and nearly had Hotel to ourselves which was fantastic! Spent lots of time in the Sauna!

Good idea if you like your hot drinks during the day is to bring a kettle to use in your room as nothing is available in the hotel during the day (other than bought stuff). Hotel staff nice and helpful but English a bit shaky.

Just returned from a four night stay at Hotel Yllasrinne Lapland. 13-17 Dec. Wow what an amazing time we had. Had expectations of what it would be like but these didnt even come close to how fantastic it was. My 7 year old son loved it, from sledging down the hill, to dancing with the reps, to burying himself in all the snow. Optional excursions are a must even if a little expensive!! Driving a snowmobile and leading a husky team was something else. Fantastic Cosmos reps who were very helpful and fun throughout. A truly magical trip to see Santa which we'll never forget.
