“Real Royal treat”
Reviewed 27 July 2012

14 fantastic days in a superb all inclusive hotel complex and location from 9th July. We can recommend Balkan Holidays as our experience started with a very efficient airline and airport at Bourgas. We were transported in an air conditioned mini bus direct to the Marina Beach and were warmly welcomed by the bell boy and reception staff then quickly taken to our room. As we arrived at 11.45pm were told that there is an evening buffet at 12 midnight and the bar was open till 2am, excellent start to our holiday.
All meals are buffet style with a wide variety of meats, salads, vegetables, fruit and cakes we were spoilt for choice and the quality was superb, although some food was lukewarm at times. There was a popular grill station at all meal times so queuing was inevitable. You could eat and drink from 7.30am till after midnight. Theme nights gave a mix of restaurant layout and food style. Dine around is a must to sample Bulgarian and Italian service and style. Or just use the buffet style in the other 2 hotels on site to give a feel of somewhere different.
Rooms are large, cleaned every day and included air conditioning and balcony. We had a side view looking to the beach which was quiet, as the pool view could be noisy from 10am due to music from the pool animation area.
The pool and beach area is well kitted out with plenty of sun beds and brollies, kept spotless by the cleaners. The area is always busy and reservation does happen so can be a small nuisance, but we always found a space, the sun is never in shadow so doesn’t matter where you are. If you want it quiet you can use the pool facilities at the other two hotels.
There are many shared facilities and entertainments across all 3 hotels which was supported by a very professional and hardworking animation team, bar and restaurant staff. The 1 hour nightly shows were excellent; we were disappointed that there was not entertainment on the lobby bar balcony which could have enhanced the atmosphere.
The holiday rep Elena was very helpful and gave some good advice on trips out and visits to other towns if going by yourself. Sozopol is well worth a visit day or night and if offered go on the small yacht and visit the St Ivan Island and jump of the boat and swim in the sea. We also hired a car from the hotel 'Sixth' company, only £52 for the day. Travelled to popular Sunny beach, Nessebar and other villages.
The complex is used in the main by Romanians, Russians, Germans and Bulgarians however, most staff speaks good english and they really appreciate a thank you. Most of the foreigners don’t speak which was a shame and can make it quiet at times, but we found good company from Gary, Linda, Neil and Nicky.
As the temperature was in the 30's every day (one evening thunder storm, gone within an hour) we could have stayed longer and would recommend this complex to all types of families.

Room Tip: Side room is quieter and on floor 5 offers good views.

this hotel is excellent, spotlessly clean, lovely rooms, great ! big balcony's my only gripe is the lukewarm food, which is apparently is there tradition,as a cook I find this very difficult so only really ate salads, If they could sort the food out, I would be more than happy to go back. (overall had a great time.)

We have just returned from a 10 day holiday at this wonderful holiday complex located between Sozopol and the Turkish/Bulgarian border and had the most memorable time.

The hotel is well-constructed with some thought having gone into the design of the main building - a nice change from some of the concrete block hotels often associated with some parts of Europe. There is a great feeling of spaciousness within the hotel, the grounds and the rooms. The rooms are pleasant and comfortable with large balconies and plenty of storage space and the main swimming pool is one of the best I have used in terms of size, shape and cleanliness and is aslo available for a larger part of the day than is common in most hotels - a useful aspect if you are a keen swimmer. Also by the pool are a slightly crazy entertainment team who are great fun, if a little noisy - at night they don their alter egos and provide great entertainment on stage in the amphitheatre.

There were also many excellent facilities some of which we made use of including the tennis courts and the magnificent spa at the sister hotel the Royal Palace. The beach is also a Blue Flag holder and deservedly so. In fact the whole bay and surrounding countryside with low rolling hills and forests is quite picturesque.

This hotel is incredibly well-staffed with a constant stream of employees cleaning, tidying, supplying drinks and all the other benefits of an AI but I have never seen so many staff working so hard to contribute to the enjoyment of the guests. Don't be shy about tipping them - most of them earn their tips by working very hard for what we were told is a low basic wage. By and large the staff also went about their work smilingly which can't have been easy considering the temperature in which they were working.

Two downsides to what was otherwise a superb holiday. Firstly, many of the rules imposed for use of the pool area etc are ignored by guests and not picked up on by staff - I feel they need to tighten up on this, although the lifeguards on both the beach and in the pool were quite strict and rightly so.

Secondly, the buffet food in the main restaurant was perfectly edible but much of it was I suppose what you would expect of mass catering and not quite as good as you might be used to. If you chose carefully or if you selected from the many salads on offer it was possible to eat well enough. Judging from the gigantic platefuls which many of the guests had I guess they thought the food was ok.

In defence of the food, there are now 3 a la carte restaurants on the complex and we dined once in each, 2 of them as part of our AI deal and in the third for a small cover charge and the food in every case was excellent.

All in all then, a great place for the type of holiday it provides and certainly a place I would recommend to anyone.

The resort is part of a bigger complex consisting of 5 hotels. It is located south of Sozopol overlooking a beautiful bay and great beach with sand dunes. The hotel and its amenities are spotless. The only really complaint we had was the food, which was average at best. You can only book AI, and they serve cheap drinks (local alcoholics only) and the same food every day. If you do not mind to eat salad, burgers, turkey, fries and pasta every day, the Duni Royal complex is a good choice, especially when you travel with kids as they offer a mini club, good shows in the evening. However, if you like good food and a more personal atmosphere we would recommend the Royal Palace Helena Sands in Sunny Beach.

Some things we did not like: Minigolf and fitness centre cost extra and the spa is rather expensive, compared to other hotels. WiFi is only available in the lobby and on the terracce and costs extra as well. Surprisingly enough, the sea water was not always of the best quality (it seemed) with lots of algae.

Excursion trips: Sozopol (after breakfast, before the other tourists arrive; the coast further south)!

Room Tip: The rooms with sea view get morning sun, whereas the rooms to the back get afternoon sun. However, t...

I was there in july 2011 with my husband and my little girl(4year old) and another 3 families with children. We had a relaxing holiday, our children enjoyed the pools, the sand, the food, the entertainment in the evening, everything.
We spent there 10 days. .
We had junior suite, it was cleaned daily.
Food was good, was variety of the food and a lot of salads, very good salads. In the restaurants was clean. Each evening had a different theme- italian, turkish, ...; there was specific food of these countries.
The entire resort was very nice and clean.
This is a very good place to go with your children and spend a relaxing and nice holiday.

Room Tip: Rooms faceing the parking were more quiet

My wife and I really enjoyed out hotel. It was spotlessly clean. The food was excellent and plentiful and the pool and beach were great.
The staff were friendly and helpful but regardless what you may hear very few speak English. Our rep told us that Bulgarians naturally don't smile. I don't know how sure I am as to the varasity of that statement but it certainly was our experience.
I was a little peeved at having to pay £40 for the hoire of my room safe. I reckon that it must have paid for itself many, many times over.
If you want an indulgent, relaxing holiday then this is the place for you. However as it is 6 miles/9K from the nearest town and there is no public transport then it's a £20 round trip in the taxi.
Don't walk to the pretty fishing village you see in the distance. Firstly its not a pretty fishing village (time share villas) and the sand it virtually unwalkable as your feet constanmtly sink into the fine powder sand. This is great by the way when you are actually on the beach.
If you get the chance take a trip to istabul. Very, very tiring but well worth it.

My boyfriend and I travelled to Duni in August of this year and spent a week here. The hotel is set within a relatively untouched area of Bulgaria which is lovely and quiet. The hotel itself is extremely clean, there are always people around cleaning up and so always looks spotless! The pools were lovely with plenty of sun beds and we would definitely recommend getting in the pool and taking part in the activities! We would put our towels down early to ensure we got a good space and never had any issues but they do go quickly. We chose to go around the pool but the is also the option of the beach which was beutiful but sand w very hot! There are plenty of lovely bars and seating areas including having the option to sit inside or outside for meals.

On arrival the staff on reception weren't the friendliest and at night they don't speak great English. On the most part staff could speak acceptable English but are very strict with their rules! However the staff were helpful but can seem rude in terms of the English manner we sometimes expect! Also, due to the varying nationalities visiting the hotel we don't share the same values. People will push into the queues at meal times and at the bar!

The food wasn't typical English for example the cooked breakfast had small roast potatoes instead of hash browns and shredded ham instead of bacon. The pancakes served at breakfast are spoken about alot and they didn't disappoint! They served great quality meats that were cooked well. I was a little dubious about the quality of the meat as it was cooked in such large batches but it was always lovely. The food varies from night to night but there is always one English thing on the menu; chips! There was fresh cheeses, bread, salad and fruit every night. There was a selection of puddings too. Also during the day there is a sandwich bar which serves from midmorning until late evening. It is just a trolley but they are delicious!

The soft drinks were served in small plastic cups which got quite annoying. There wasnt any drink dispensers and queues could get quite long so getting numerous drinks was the best thing to do. The cocktails were lovely and we sent most evening on the beautiful bar outside sipping on them. One thing I would mention is that women definitely get served before the men regardless of the waiting time.

In the evening the resort holds a show in the auditorium which was worth going to but not to everyone's taste. I would advice getting there early because people do reserve seats with any means, for example leaves or an apple from dinner! The seats aren't the most comfortable either but fine for the length of the show!

On our stay we also visited the town Sozopol which was worth going to if you can get a day trip. The shopping in Bourgas wasn't up to much so would skip that as it has shops such as M&S and Zara which we have at home. There are watersports available on the beach but they were very expensive, 60lev for 10 minutes of the jet ski.

Overall, we had an amazing holiday and didn't want to come home! I would recommend this hotel to anyone, it's great value for money.
