What an amazing way to end our visit to NZ. The guides were brilliant and were able to give some information about the geology of the land. Definately the right company for the guided tour of the Alpine Crossing.

Thank you very much for your review and we are really pleased to hear that you had a fabulous trip … especially as it was your last adventure before leaving New Zealand. Take care and hopefully we'll see you again!

Thanks to the guides and staff at Adrift, we had the most amazing trip, doing the Tongariro Crossing. Great pace, steady interesting commentary and good humour all added to the spectacular scenery. The beer at the end of the day was an added unexpected bonus!

Adrift was extremely flexible in letting us shift days from a rainy freezing day that was unwalkable to a few days later where we had some of the best weather of the year. Company is extremely professional and have everything needed for your walk, and more importantly are 100% focused on safety and your enjoyment. Our guide Jono was fantastic and fun, and would happily recommend them to anyone.

This review is *not* about the Alpine Crossing and its guides, but concerns a custom Lord of the Rings-themed tour. This is why I rated 'poor' instead of 'terrible' - it feels unfair to give the company its first 'terrible' because of something that is not its main focus.
Nevertheless, we felt obliged to share our experience with people looking for a tour through Mordor (as there are little options in the Tongariro National Park area, while many areas there have been used for filming). We are glad Adrift accommodated us with a special package to see some of it and they were great in communicating about this beforehand, but in hindsight we realized that we did not get value for our money.

This was one of the most expensive Lord of the Rings tours of the nine we did in New Zealand - 350 NZD for two people for about four/five hours. It turned out to be something you can easily do by yourself if you have a rental car and the Lord of the Rings Location Guidebook by Ian Brodie. Travellers without a car should still consider this as a viable option to get to the two Forbidden Pool and Ithilien Camp locations (waterfalls, one of which not used in the movies) and the ski area that functioned as the slopes of Mount Doom (many shots of this area can be seen throughout the movies).

These are the only three locations you will visit and it will also be by car - there is no hiking involved. We were hoping for additional behind-the-scenes and/or insider information to make up for that, but during the long drives inbetween locations it appeared our guide knew less of both Tolkien and Peter Jackson's moviess than us passengers did. He even referred to a YouTube video concerning the (in)famous Eagles rescue by saying the Eagles should have just flown the Ring into Mordor, so the three movies wouldn't have to be made at all. Not exactly what you want to hear or get into as a fan on an almost 400 dollar trip.

Still, this guide was a good man, going to great lengths to get us nice pictures and making sure we were as dry and safe possible because we had bad weather (rain, tough winds). Don't let bad weather stop you from making these trips, by the way - the resulting mist added a great Mordor-like feel to everything.
The lady who drove us was also very sweet, arranged a bathroom stop in time and we had pleasant chats with her inbetween locations. Regardless of the steep price there were no refreshments included, so if you do plan on taking the tour, be sure to bring some as you are on the road for quite some time.

All in all I feel sorry to leave a negative review for what seems to be a great company with nice staff, but I simply had to confess I had a better time when we drove back to the ski area on our own later that day with people we met on the tour. There was no crowding with the tour group for pictures, we could spend more time climbing around and use the Location Guidebook for exact filming spots and extra information - and it cost us nothing.

My wife and I treked Tongariro as part of our honeymoon. Stu was our guide, and was instrumental in helping us have an enjoyable, safe, and entertaining time. The three day hike was great (although the rains kept us from seeing the Emerald Lakes.

Actually went in Dec 2005; still worth reviewing.
