“Basic dormitory accommodation”
Reviewed 24 March 2014

This lodge offers basic small bunk rooms with shared toilet/shower facilities. We found the bunks rather hard and uncomfortable to sleep on, you really want a good night's sleep prior to doing the Tongariro Crossing.

Email contact is best with the lodge when booking.

Hi, thanks for your review. Yes you booked a basic bunk room at a relatively low cost, this room type was never going to be luxury or large. We did apologies for the one uncomfortable bed and as we explained we would have more than happily changed room or replaced the mattress in question. Unfortunately I don't know why you never mentioned this until checkout which really meant we could not offer a solution for you. It was a simple matter of swapping the mattress for the correct one to suit the bed, sometimes people move things around, we accept that and sincerely apologies for you uncomfortable sleep. Regards.

Me and some friends and family stayed here over the weekend as a base to do the tongariro crossing. We had got some vouchers online through yazoom I think it was. The rooms were pretty small but since all you're doing is sleeping they were good for us. Breakfast was just basic continental but enough to get you started for the day. It was a quick trip up to the mountain from national park with transfers organised by the manager and the cost of which was included in the vouchers. Chris, the manager, was able to direct us to the pub next door for dinner when we arrived and didn't mind a later check in. My parents aren't the back packer types but they enjoyed it and dad said it was a good environment to meet people.

Had a great time in national park and doing the crossing. Definitely feeling the pain today though :)

I stayed here just after Christmas in order to complete the Tongariro crossing, booking off a Grab one equivalent. The owner Chris was very efficient about emailing back and when the weather was looking unhelpful 48h before my scheduled visit I was able to bring my booking forward 24h - easily sorted via email with no fuss or extra charge. Breakfast was included in our rate and included cereal, yoghurt, toast and fruit with tea and coffee. The rooms are small with bunks or single/double beds and linen including towels was provided. Bathrooms were shared and very clean. It was very quiet as this isn't on the backpacker route although it is this grade just a lot nicer and cleaner than most. The dining and living areas have a lovely view of Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro in good weather.
I also recommend dinner at the Station Cafe - and suggest you book!
