“Very nice hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 July 2012 via mobile

Stayed 3 nights, location is excellent for park and ride in to York, £5 for 2 people return. We had a junior suite 2 separate rooms each with a TV, we only had breakfast, and had the best bacon
I have ever had, rooms was a bit dated but still in good order and clean.also had a spar bath, and over head shower. Staff was very helpful and pleasant and to eager to please you. Spoke to the general manager how give us is time to give us some very useful advice, and some information on the history of the hotel, and the old part which was once a large house with extensive grounds. Thank you to all the staff for a great stay.

We recently stayed for 2 nights, from reception and across all the hotel every member of staff was friendly but efficient,it is clear that a special effort has been made to give this service which does inhance the enjoyable stay.As i am tall i requested a king sized bed which was provided without fuss, the room had all the usual facilities including 2 comfortable chairs, the only minor fault were the bedside lights which were awkward and poor light.
We had the evening meal on both nights,a different menu was on offer, each course had a tasty combination of ingredients particuarly the main, breakfast was also very good,we liked the atmosphere in the dining room.
The lounge area and bar are relaxing with a slightly continental feel, all the rooms in the hotel are clean and tidy.
As is known the hotel is a few miles from the centre of York but this doesnt cause a problem,a taxi was easily arranged. The hotel is used by coach tours but this doesnt affect the high level of service.
I would strongly recommend this hotel and prices are competitive if some research is carried out.

Having read the experiences of fellow Tripadvisors we booked a junior suite for 3 nights at this Mercure hotel. Our stay was comfortable and we were well looked after in very clean and friendly surroundings. The accomodation in Room 421 was spacious, very clean and well furnished in the traditional style. We had a sitting room with comfortable settee and TV,a bedroom with kingsize bed,and a bathroom with four piece suite. Each room had controllable heat and ventilation so room temperature was always just right. From this room we experienced no noise from the hotel but the main A19 road outside 'our' side of the hotel was audible but not too intrusive. The room is quite a trek from reception,up two flights of stairs and two steps and through five doors but help with cases is available.I understand there is a lift to the newer wing of the hotel where room decor is more contemporary. The public rooms of the hotel are large and comfortable (although our visit was during a damp spell in July and my wife felt the cold in these areas so we did not linger). The dining room has a curved window looking onto a brick wall which is softened with plants and planters. The service was very good on the first two nights for dinner but it was busier on the third night, with an influx of racegoers for the next meeting at York Racecourse, and the service was noticeably slower. The food quality cannot be faulted and the variety was good.We paid an extra £15 each per night for the dinner, bed and breakfast package and received an allowance of £22 each for dinner. The set meal is £17 for two courses and £22 for three courses excluding drinks and coffee. You can eat from the al a carte menu and still get two courses within the £22 limit. All staff were down-to-earth,friendly and helpful. The location is on the A19 just north of the junction with the A1237 at Rawcliffe Bar where one of the York Park-and-Ride services starts from.So it is a very easy journey into the centre of York, about a 5 minute car ride and a15 minute bus ride and you can also alight right outside the National Railway Museum on the way in.
This hotel suited our preference for clean comfortable accomodation, good food on site, ample free parking and ease of travel to the town centre, and good access to surrounding attractions and towns. Not cheap at £154 per night dinner bed and breakfast but good value for our needs.

Room Tip: If it bothers you,ask for room with access via a lift.

Only stayed here one night but staff were pleasant and helpful and the hotel is lovely. Only problem we had is that google maps doesn't know where it is and sends you the wrong way down the road it's on even with the full address & postcode entered, had to call the hotel and get directions.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to pass on your feedback. I was delighted to read that you enjoyed your stay. If you enter Skelton in place of York, google maps should take you in the right direction. Hope this helps for the future.

Hotel was good, very typical of a big corporate. However, the service was really good. Staff on reception were welcoming and very helpful, first night in the restaurant, a little slow, due to a large group being seated, but when the staff dealt with us it was polite and professional with a good nature. Excellent breakfast and the second night, service was top notch. We stayed for my stepsons graduation and even though we had a late breakfast, the staff were in no hurry to rush us. Rooms perhaps a little dated in decor, but all very clean and spacious. The staff really make the hotel and it's so nice to receive such pleasant service - all too often we get mediocre and they are definitely much better than the average! Taxi £10 into York city centre, and reception arranged for us. Excellent parking on site. Would recommend to others.

Room Tip: Rooms at the rear of the hotel, blackout curtains meant we struggled to wake at 8am!!
