“Terrible Experience”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 August 2014

We stayed at Michelle Boutique in May of 2014. I am sorry to say that it was a terrible stay. The only good thing was a friendly staff.

First of all we were the ONLY two customers at the hotel and NO it was not a good thing. It just looked deserted.

The food was okay, but the same menu was served all day long, with not a lot of options. Terrible idea!!

During daytime it was super hot and the A/C was not working properly, we had to sit right in front of the A/C to keep ourselves cool.

Worst part about the stay was that it rained overnight and it flooded the room. We had to clean it up with towels. We were leaving that evening and they were not too concerned about it. It was incredibly inconvenient and a terrible experience. We spoke to Ranjaka to explain the situation; he did not want to hear anything negative about the hotel. He was even reluctant to apologize for the situation and also said there was nothing he can do (which was really rude considering we did not ask him to do anything). Terrible customer service displayed by the upper management. They could’ve been more accommodating considering there were no other customers.

Thank you for your review which has been posted after four months since departing. Irrespective of the consequences in our organization blame culture does not exist and
We are humble enough to accept constructive criticism in the right spirit. We firmly believe we could learn from our mistakes and correct ourselves.

Since our valued guest seems to have forgotten her facts, naturally after four long months, permit me to refresh her memory and place on record actual facts for her benefit
and for the benefit of our prospective guests.

Their reservation was made through an agent with whom we work closely and a tangible discount was offered with an upgrade to a higher category suite with a Jacuzzi. It is a
fact that they were the only guests in the hotel on the particular day being the month of May where hotels experience very low occupancy levels. Since they were known to our
agent, our Resident Manager was even advised to host them to Drinks as a gesture of goodwill. We also do not deny the fact that water had seeped through the balcony sliding
doors due to heavy rain experienced overnight. The suite they occupied is in the extreme corner of the building which has a breathtaking 180 view of the ocean. As it has large
glass Doors / windows on both sides, it is exposed to direct sunlight during the day. That possibly may have been the reason for the room being hot especially when the curtains
are drawn.

Food at “Michelle” is highly appreciated by our valued guests and the encouraging reviews will confirm this. Furthermore 5 starters, 4 soups, 13 main courses and 6 desserts to
Choose from is a wide range and this I possibly cannot accept. When this lady spoke to me and requested a complimentary stay or at least a further discount, I politely refused
since the maximum possible discount had already been offered to them with an upgrade and there was no provision to justify any further concessions.

We certainly are not offended. We are only inspired to correct ourselves and move forward. Only your conscience will know the authenticity of your complaint but we thank you for having brought this to our notice even at this late stage and apologize for any inconvenience caused.

We travelled to Sri Lanka in April on our honeymoon and what a lovely 7 days it was. We travelled to some lovely luxurious properties during our stay and Michelle Boutique was up there with the best. The beach was lovely, the food was limited in terms of choice but in terms of taste and quality it was amazing, ideal for an one night stay. But the highlight of this stay was our very own private plunge pool under the stars. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who would like to relax by the beach for a night or two.

Room Tip: Choose a room with your very own plunge pool

Just few steps to the beach with amazing ocean view especially the sunset. Infinity room is the best with private pool on the deck facing ocean. Wonderful service staffs, especially Mr. Walter, the F&B manager arranged all of my breakfast, lunch and beautiful sunset dinner at the beach deck. The location only 25min to Hikkaduwa and Galle. After all, this is one of the best hotel I ever stayed. I should booked for couple more nights here...................

Room Tip: Infinity is the best, but I took a "rooms" visit with manager to all the rooms and room #1...

We booked Michelle's for a relaxing last few days of our trip. We didn't plan to sight-see during our time at Michelle's, we just wanted to stay at the hotel, take in the view, read, swim and eat. Given the location of the hotel (basically in the middle of nowhere) it was perfect for this.

We had our own private plunge pool and deck which overlooked the beach, the room had a really nice design with beautiful artwork on the walls. Whilst the front of the hotel looks out over rocks, you can walk 10 metres from the front of the hotel to the nearest beach and beaches extend to both sides of the hotel. It wasn't crowded, it felt like at times we had the whole beach in both directions to ourselves.

The restaurant was very expensive, and the meal quality probably wasn't worth the high price, but we enjoyed everything we selected from the menu. On the first night we sat out on the edge of the deck, eating our meal by candlelight with the constant rumble of waves in the background which was pretty special. Breakfast was included with our room and everyday we enjoyed fresh fruit, bakery goods and then our breakfast. There were a couple of errors on the menu but nothing that spoilt our meals.

The hotel staff were extremely friendly, sometimes too friendly coming to our room regularly to see if we needed more water. The hotel also allowed us a very late check-out so that we didn't have to wait at the airport for too long before our flight home.

We loved our stay at Michelle's. It was perfect for the end of our holiday. If you are over sight-seeing and you just want to relax it is a great hotel.

Having booked our stay in January and then reading the last two reviews just before our arrival we were somewhat apprehensive but we didn't need to be as from the moment we arrived we were made very welcome and the place is amazing. We were mesmerised by the 'noisy' waves; they were stunning and added to the wonder of this boutique hotel. Everything we ate was delicious and the staff were most attentive without standing over you. We really didn't want to leave.

This is beach hotel jammed in between the busy Galle road and the ocean. Luckily you won't hear the traffic very much as the sea swell is much louder. On the other side if you don't really love listening to the breakers roaring against the rocks you won't be pleased either!

Talking of the sea swell leeds us to the usability of the beautiful beach for swimming. All five days of our stay the red flag was hissed but according to the beach boys this is common year round and merely a warning that you should take care of yourself (as any decent people should do when swimming in an open sea!) So, if your not afraid of medium to high sized waves swimming or rather bathing should not be a problem, there were no dangerous currents; neither reported nor felt. On two days though waves were to high for taking a bath but I think this is a fact valid for most of the beaches of Sri Lanka.

About the hotel: Small and exclusive, nice looking very modern architecture nice and big rooms and a beautiful pool never crowded!
Unfortunatly the hotel is in the middle of nowhere, not a single restaurant within reach and the management for sure knows about that! Having experianced a huge disproportion in price and value all over Sri Lanka the rip off in this hotel's restaurant is without precedence! 12$ for a simple tomato soup would suit a gourmet restaurant in Europe or the USA but not an average eatery in Asia. And that - unfortunatly must be said - is the standard of the quality of this restaurant! (We had to send back dishes several times, either they were uneatable or not what ordered or both, but had price tags "attached" like in a parsienne Gauld Milliot Temple!) Breakfast on the other hand, cooked to order, was very good.

Finally, would I recommend this hotel? Yes, if you want to relax two or three days and you are a strong swimmer, love the constant n o i s e of the sea and don't care about food very much. No, in all other cases.

This was our last hotel we stayed at before we flew home from a delightful stay in Sri Lanka. Maybe it was the reviews I had read, maybe it was the price I was paying, or maybe it was the shoddy appearance of the room itself but I was disappointed. We booked a plunge pool suite. The room was painted white, and all the Formica furniture was white. When I walked in the room, I was immediately turned off by the holes in the drapery. Ok, no problem, open the drapes and you won’t see it. The white plastic furniture was worn with obvious damage ( cigarette burns/chips). The lamp and walls had blood on them from “mosquito kills” A steady stream of ants appeared each afternoon in the bar area. While I did bring it to the attention of our room steward, and he promised to spray, I am not sure what happened because they continued to appear. Yes, I know it’s a tropical area but it was a bit gross. The windows probably hadn’t been cleaned in months. The door to get out to our plunge pool was next to impossible to open. Being on the ocean, I am sure that it needs to be done daily but …. the bathrooms amenities were in glass jars which my husband dropped while in the shower. The bathroom lights flickered and obviously needed to be replaced. You can’t really swim in the water. The red flag seemed to be a permanent structure. Being an ocean loving creature, this was very disappointing to me. The pool while lovely is in an area that is completely shaded by the sun. So, I decided to spend my time in my plunge pool which was in the sun. There I found peace ;) We did make use of the rather expensive, but good massage services. Relative to food, our first night was horrific. All four dinners came out cold. The manager and chef apologized profusely, and they didn’t charge us but no one really ate the food. From there, the food picked up tremendously. Breakfast was excellent, and all other dinners were great. Our room steward Chaminda, the pool boys, and our waiter ( whose name I didn’t get) made the stay worthwhile.
Chaminda with his smiling face enabled me to get over “this hotel experience.” I am laughing because I know I am slamming the hotel. But, this room steward was able to disarm my annoyance at every turn:)
If you can get past the poor condition of the room, the room was very large, and the view fantastic. If you haven’t been to see the whales, there really is nothing to do which was fine for us. You just sit there and relax which is what we did.

Room Tip: Don't book the plunge pool, the less expensive room with an ocean view was in good shape, and a...

Contents of this review are well noted and we are seriously looking into them. In our organization constructive criticism too is well accepted and immediate remedial measures are taken.

In this instance however, it is very apparent that the intention of these guests had been to "SLAM" the hotel ( In very words by the guests, in the review ) for some strange reason. Despite the hotel being busy during the mentioned period, had their concerns being brought to the notice of the Resident Manager or at least the front office staff, whilst in the hotel,we could certainly have taken immediate action.

Irrespective of the authenticity of the complaint, we thank you for having brought it to our notice even at this stage and apologize for any inconvenience caused.
