“Great food, nice atmosphere”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 May 2013

Although a bit expensive, it was worth it. The food is great. We shared fried anchovies for starters and a tarbot as main course. Both were very nice prepared. It was more than enough do no deserts for us. Including a small bottle of wine and 2 coffee: 110 euro.

“Traditional food, top-quality ingredients, excellent cooking”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 December 2012

This restaurant located in the small but picturesque corner of Algorta/Ereaga beach, is well worth a visit if you are looking for traditional Basque cooking at its best. It is not at the cheap end, but you really get what you are paying for.
I personally have only eaten a la carté, but lots of people recommend the Menu of the Day as being a really good deal too.

What we had:
First course to share:
Jamón ibérico, Clams (almejas). The ham was unbelievably good- melt in the mouth with an intense flavour, some of the best I have eaten. Portion was decent Clams were large and moreish.

Second course: Besugo (a kind of sea-bream), generally considered to be one of the finest fish. They told us the weight and we ordered 2 to share between 4 people. They were enormous, came cooked to perfection, and were brought out cooked whole for us to see, then taken away to divided into 4.
My portion was too much for me but the other 3 hungry diners helped me finish it.
Desserts were simple but home-made and good.
A good wine selection and the mark-up is reasonable.
Coffees and teas, and the bill came to about 60 euros per head, very good value for the quality of the food and wine we had eaten.

All these ingredients are pretty expensive if you went and bought them yourself at the market too.

Place: The Karola is located in one of the typical fishing village houses converted into a restaurant. Hence the place is tiny: kitchen on the ground floor just by the entrance, and there is no bar. You go straight up to the first floor where there a limited number of tables. The place has been decorated very well while keeping mind the sea/marine theme. During weekends it is probably advisable to book. It is also open Sunday evenings, when a lot of the restaurants in Bilbao are closed for dinner.

“A good beautiful restaurant in one of my favourite places!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 July 2012

It's a good restaurant and is in Puerto Viejo in Algorta, the old fishermen's village, a very nice place with a special atmosphere. Karola Etxea is a classic there.
