“Great spot”
Reviewed 18 March 2014

We chose this place for its proximity to the Okarito Kiwi Tour, which we thoroughly enjoyed. It's a great value for the money, with an indoor eating and food preparation area (has fridge but no cooking facilities), public phone, and hot showers (coin operated, but well worth it). The indoor space allows one to get out of foul weather if necessary. We met really interesting people here and were glad for the respite from some of the really crowded Top 10 Holiday Parks. During our time there, we enjoyed walks on the beach and a day trip to Fran Josef. Tenters--be sure to choose a high spot in case of rain! It can get soggy.

This is a community run campsite. Payment is in cash via an honesty box. Cost in Jan 2014 $12.50 per adult. Kids free. You will need cash to pay but if you have not got this you can call at the kayak rental place to pay.
The campsite has all the necessary facilities, there is a kitchen with table, chairs, one sink (cold water only) and a fridge freezer. A cooking area has a coin run BBQ and a place to set up camp stoves. There are 4 cold water sinks for washing and 2 coin operated showers. $1 buys 4 minutes of hot water. There is no cell phone reception, but there is a card operated pay phone. Don't use your credit card as Telecom will charge you the earth and more! Buy a yadda card before coming to Okarito.
The location is perfect, very close to the beach, lagoon and village. The beach is amazing and the sunsets absolutely stunning. You can hear the ocean from the campsite. The birdlife on the lagoon is amazing, and even the campsite has resident tui. There are some good walks in the area, we recommend the walk to 3 mile, and also up to the trig point.
This is the West Coast. Prepare for sandflies.

Campgroung without predefined sites runned by the community. You pay in a honesty box. The facilities are basic but clean. The location ist great near a very beautiful beach and the lagoon. Nearby are also starting two walking tours.
A highlight of Okarito is the kiwi tour operated by Okarito Kiwi Tours. It starts in walking distance to the campground.

P.S. I never saw such a beautiful night sky as in Okarito before. A really beautiful place!

The Okarito Community Campground is a real gem! Plenty of room for campervans, big grassy area for tents only, plenty of fireplaces. The beach is a stone's throw away and you can be lulled to sleep by the ocean. If the weather's good you'll wake up and have a great view on the snow capped peaks Southern Alps, plus you have many hiking options, or you can rent kayaks, have a boat tour in the lagoon or... the limit is just your imagination, really :)
Did I mention the sunsets???
Paula and Swade, the managers, are really kind & helpful (you can find them at the boat tour) and have a lot of knowledge about the area (and obviously know everyone in town :) ).
I'd definitely stay there again!

Community camping ground with an honesty box, next to a beautiful beach and lagoon. With only one other camper van there, we enjoyed a lovely peaceful night. Facilities are limited to toilets, two showers (NZ$2 for 6 minutes although one of the coin boxes jammed) washing facilities and a tired lounge for campers.

Would return for the setting.
