We stayed in the Rimu house for just 2 nights and it was just fantastic. Whilst Rimu may be a little older than the rest of the accommodation, it was exceptionally clean tidy and comfortable. As for the double bed being a little soft (as per previous review) this is subjective as we found it to be fine and significantly better than some other hostels. Laura, was fantastic -very helpful, accommodating and certainly made our stay very special, together with her dog. She kindly closed off one of the 3 rooms so that we could spread out and have the house to ourselves. Our only regret is that we didn't stay a bit longer. Staying at this Hostel was definately one of the highlights of our holiday!

We stayed in the Rimu house for 2 nights & the small hostel is lovely. Laura is a fantastic & cheerful host, always approachable for the most recent weather report (which in our case was consistently devastating). While our room & ensuite bathroom were neat & clean & we enjoyed sitting outside on the little porch if it wasn't raining too hard, the double bed was tiny & way too soft to be comfortable. Additionally, the hostel is more pricey than other BBH, therefor an update of kitchenware & dining table (it only seats 4 while the Rimu house can have 6 guests) would be necessary.

This was place was very quaint and exactly what we were looking for as we tried to rest up before our ice climb. The rooms were great.

My only gripe is that okarito is so small that there aren't any restaurants there. You have to drive 30 min each way to franz josef to eat.

I'd definitely recommend d this place but bring god with you!

We stayed in the Rimu On the positive side the unit was clean and Laura running the place is very helpful and friendly BUT;
The unit is in dire need to be upgraded The kitchen in very tired, old appliances and a hole in the ceiling with evidence of damp.There is one small saggy sofa to sit on in the kitchen. The beds are just average.
There is no included internet and 8 dollars worth is just enough to get your emails and basic data.
As there is no TV or mobile phone signal free internet is IMHO a must.
WIth a little money spent on this place it could get 4 stars but not as is
Add small touches ..milk tea etc woudl also be nice

A beautiful place to stay, off the beaten track but near enough to the glaciers. We stayed in the 'Hutal', a well-equipped self-contained studio. Such a relaxing homely place with a comfortable bed and lovely wooden interior. We enjoyed the coffee shop visits and were treated to a night of folk music from Adam McGrath in the local hall. Laura is a fantastic host and booked us onto a trip up the Fox glacier. We really wish we could have stayed longer. The best accommodation that we stayed in in our entire 5 week trip to New Zealand!!

One night isn't enough, Okarito is a great place to spend a day or two, beach walks, kayaking, bird watching, bush walks and only a short drive to Franz Joseph for any glacier experiences you may want. The Beach House is a great place to chill out, having stayed here twice, first in the summit lodge (spacious with a touch of luxury) and this trip the 'hutel', a great private, romantic studio, and I highly recommend. And Laura, you are a great host and do an awesome job running this place. Thanks so much!

Room Tip: The 'hutel' is the best option for couples if you want the privacy and space, however the ot...

Myself and my fiance had a wonderful experience at this hidden gem on the West Coast. Away from the touristy bustle of nearby Franz Josef, Okarito Beach House is perfectly located by the lagoon and the ocean.

We felt right at home with the welcome that we received from Laura who not only ensured our comfort while staying at the Hutel but also assisted in booking activities at our next destination. She also pointed us towards the Okarito Trigg trek which offers beautiful panoramic views of the area including the backdrop of the snowcapped Southern Alpes.

I would highly recommend this property to anyone coming to the region
