“Beautiful resort, great hotel and fantastic skiing”
Reviewed 8 January 2014

These apartments are in a great location in Montgenevre, you can ski in and ski out from both sides of the apartment, we were there for New Year and the resort was not too busy. Skiing is very picturesque and the weather was great. There are a few restaurants and a couple if bars but not a place for nightlife. La Graal pub is very lively. Would definitely go back next year

Loved the location - just a very short walk to a run or the lifts and skied right back to the ski locker door after a heavy snowfall! The apartment was spacious for us - 2 adults and a teenager with all of the kitchen facilities you could need. The ski hire shop and a lovely supermarket with a deli were right next door but the main town was a short walk away. A nice lounge area and outdoor pool and spa area but didn't manage to get wifi at all - not a problem for us but teenage son would have liked to go online!!
Couldn't book in until 5pm - though there was confusion with that as others had been advised that it was 3pm but we made the most of the time by storing luggage and getting out on the slopes for an extra half a day so missed all of the check-in confusion and after 5 o'clock this was simple and quick!

Arrived shortly before 5pm to find a queue 10 deep and 4 across, not a good first mpression after a 12 hour drive! Reception staff were very disinterested and this continued all week however, the apartment was fairly spacious for the two of us, we were right next to the piste (about 15 steps from the button lift giving access to the gondula up) the supermarket, bakersand ski hire shop were very convenient and the locals were all very friendly. The swimming pool was too cold and crowded so only went once. The buildings are a maze of corridors and plain red doors, it took us until Thursday to find a direct route to reception without going outside, so better signage would be useful. We requested a sunny balcony but had no sun at all and the view was in through the windows of the buildings opposite. For January we had fantastic weather and fantastic snow conditions we loved the slopes in Montgenevre especially the Observation area however if you want to ski in Italy the route to get there is very long. As experienced skiers it took us almost an hour to be skiing in Italy and the run down was a very long, winding, icy path, no fun at all. By the time you get to Sestriere it's time to go back. We were advised that we should have driven half way to enjoy the Olympic Italian slopes.

Room Tip: Ask for higher level room and Ancolie building has wifi access in the room

We have just returned from a week at Residence Hameau des Airelles. We had to fly from Gatwick to Turin which was a bit of a pain as we live in Bristol, however the transfer to resort was only 1.5 hrs. and not the usual scary windy bus trip.
On arrival at the apartments just before midday, there was quite a large queue at reception. We were aware that we may not get into the apartments till 5, which is a bit of a pain. We paid the 36Euro to get into 1 room early which made a huge difference as we were able to collect our equipment, ski passes and get some shopping.
We had booked a 1 bed with a cabin room with Bunk Beds. The apartments are spacious and clean, we had a fantastic view of the resort and slopes as we were at the front. The only drawback with being at the front was slight traffic noise. Other members of our party had the 2 bed apartments, which had even more space so great for families.
As mentioned before the Wi-Fi was a bit annoying as you had to go down to Reception to pick the signal up. However our rep has said that this is going to be fixed for next year’s season. The swimming pool and sauna area is lovely and clean, however as it doesn’t open until 4.30, so it can get quite busy. The first couple of visits the pool wasn’t too cold, however, after 2 days of solid snow, the water was freezing. If you are lucky enough to be in the main building it is only a short walk, however we had to go outside to get to the main building, only a very small gripe, but it is a bit chilly walking back.
The location of the apartments is fantastic. You only have to go out reception and you are on the ski slopes, really ski in-out. If you have booked lessons there is a little yellow bus that stops directly outside the residence, and takes you to the main slope. It only takes about 5 mins, which is great for families as it would be a good 15 mins walk with all your equipment. They are quite regular, starting just after 8.30 am and is then every 15 – 20mins. The bus driver was really friendly, which is quite unusual we found. Don’t panic if you take different routes, as Residence Hameau des Airelles is always the last drop off!!
There is a little supermarket just next to the residence which sells most basic things, they also do cooked chickens, however you have to order them the day before and they cost 16 euro. We did not buy one so cannot give feedback on that. There is also a pizza place next door, again you have to order the pizza earlier in the da y for that night. Price was quite reasonable. Next to this is a Twinner ski hire shop, we booked all our equipment on line before hand and just picked it up. All staff was very friendly and helpful.
Just along from this is a lovely bakery, selling fresh bread and cakes daily. All very reasable.
The village itself is one of the best we have been to. We found everyone really friendly and helpful, it is a very family orientated resort. Not sure if there is much night life as we were in a big group of families we made our own entertainment. One very snowy afternoon we did the walk over the border into Italy to the village of Claviere. It is only just over a mile but felt further as there was thick snow to walk through. We ended up in the main bar next to the ski lift for a hot chocolate. The staff was lovely and made us feel really welcome.
There are 2 ski schools in the village, we used Apeak, not ESF. Both instructors were brilliant, they pride themselves with having smaller classes but still charge the same as ESF. My lesson only had 3 people in it, whereas the equivalent in ESF had 12. The instructors adapted the lessons to your exact needs and therefore we got so much more out of the lessons. We booked 3 private lessons for some of our party, on the last one the weather was so bad that she rearranged it for us to ensure we got the most from the lesson.
So to summarise – Loved the Village, loved the accommodation, Loved the ski school, and yes we are already looking to go back next year.

Ok , last year when i reviewed this residence i wrote that we probably wouldn't be back again this year. Well , we did go back again ( third year in a row) and loved it more than ever. We were in the same block as last year in nearly the same apartment.
Two bedrooms , living area with kitchenette, bathroom with seperate w/c and a good sized balcony meant we had ample room to sprawl out and make ourselves at home. The view was very good , looking onto the slopes .
As far as amenities go , the baker and mini-market are almost next door as are ski-hire for those who prefer to travel light.
Instruction in the resort is good with the ESF being the main school and mainly English speaking.
Our two boys had four lessons and gained more snowflake awards from the ESF , both are very capable skiers and are nearly ready for the more serious training.
The snow condition was excellent and our favourite runs were Rocher de l'Aigle ( Eagle Rock) , Le Rhoddos and the skier/boardercross track which was a lot of fun.
There are many family friendly eating options in Montgenevre with Les Rois Mages , Ceasers , La Grall and the restaurant up the mountain being the tastiest and most user friendly.
The swimming pool at the residence was good but as i wrote two years ago there is a sharp unmarked step on the way in or out of the pool which could cause injury. This needed seeing to then and obviously still needs seeing to now .
Anyway , will we be back next year? ..............................Probably .......yes. There are so many positives to this residence and resort that have had us staying three years on the trot now that we feel quite at home with the place .
PS . The locals are lovely folk . Being on the French / Italian border they have a lovely mix of both countries characteristics.

Positive: the resort is great and this residence has convenient access to the slopes. Our kids also loved the swimming pool. However customer service at reception is not great. We had an incident during our stay when doing the packing for an early morning departure, we realised that the ski room is locked between 7pm and 8.30am (cannot be accessed even with the apartment keys) and our equipment was still there. Needless to say, reception was also closed and no-one was there to help. I tried to call different telephone numbers many times without response. Even if it is a self-catering apartment, there must be some way to access personnel after 7.30pm in case of urgency! So in the morning we had to leave without our skis. When calling the reception afterwards, they provided no assistance in sending the equipment to us by post. Eventually another Finnish family (who had no space left in their car) had to find a way to take care of the skis. Had they not been there, our skis worth ~1000 euros would have been left with MMV forever. This is a fatal customer service issue that prevents us from coming back in the future.

Just got back from a week at Hammeau Des Airelles. Quick flight from Birmingham to Grenoble, but beware its a 3-4 hr transfer bus journey from Grenoble depending on time of day you travel. Apartments are lovely and spacious with a well equipt kitchen, nice big flat screen tv and DVD player, separate bedroom to lounge/dining area. All ski equipment is kept in lockers in the basement, signs everywhere saying no ski boots around reception/ apartments. Nice communal lounge area. Swimming pool is lovely but gets so busy because it is only open from 4:30-7:30pm each evening. Also the adult spa area is a great addition but the sauna, steam room and jacuzzi can only fit about 4 people in each, gets very crowded. Great ski in, ski out location. Just outside the reception you can put your skis on and ski down to the lift, you can then ski down right outside the apartments at the end of the day.
A lovely supermarket/deli and bakery are just by the apartments. They do great fresh raviolli pasta, lasagne, cooked chickens to order and also a fresh pizza takeaway service. Great bread, cheese and hams available.
2 big grumbles of these apartments, on arrival you are asked to pay a damage deposit of €300. I was told this money isn't taken from your account, it is a pre-authorisation only. On returning to the UK, on checking my bank account, this money had been taken from my account, and now 2 days after returning, it still hasn't been returned. I have emailed mmv who I booked with direct and asked why they have not cancelled this transaction and returned my money. Be warned, make sure you have enough money in your account to cover this so other payments don't bounce/ make you overdrawn.
Second gripe is the Internet access. I know obviously you are on holiday, but should you need Internet access, you have to sit in the reception/lounge area to use it. It is very sporadic and crashes quite often.
Overall a great ski area, good apartments compared to some I've stayed in in France, the town of Montgenevre is very small, only a few eating out restaurants and if you aren't keen on ham, cheese, bread or pizza you are stuffed. Visiting the Italian pistes in Claviere is definitely a good idea, easy to get to from Montgenevre, a great mountain restaurant on the Italian side.
