The house is located on the ocean just over the hill from West Bay in an upscale area of the island. Several undeveloped lots are on one side of the house providing a very private feel. Although another house is located relatively close to the opposite side of Casa Cascada, it is fairly well screened with vegetation in pool/patio area. The landscaping was colorful and varied, with many varieties of blooming plants in both the front and rear of the house. There is no sand beach at the house, but the ocean waves crashing against the iron shore was a beautiful alternative. The hot tub is a nice place to relax after a morning or afternoon of diving on the world class reefs and walls of Roatan. The pool and patio area was mostly uncluttered, and had 4 chase lounges and a dining table and 6 chairs (which were located under one of the 2nd floor balconies and provided some protection from the weather). The propane grill was new. The multi level waterfall was not only unnatural and unsightly (to my taste, anyway) but also noisy with the water cascading from level to level when the water was turned on (which was rarely during our visit).
The inside of the home was very clean and well appointed with comfortable and well maintained furniture. The high ceiling in the living area, with lots of big windows and glass doors was bright and airy. The kitchen, although not large, had plenty of cabinet space, with even more in the adjoining laundry room. The indoor dining area was tight, even for our group of only 5. The 1st floor master was large in both the bedroom and bath areas, with great views. The other 1st floor bedroom was large, but had no closet and no direct bathroom access. The 2nd floor bedrooms both have private bathrooms. The smaller of the 2 bedrooms has a large closet but no drawer space. Both have awesome views from the private balconies. In fact, views from just about anywhere in the home are spectacular, with the exception of that waterfall plopped in the corner of pool area.
The management agents for the property, Sam and Ruth, couldn't have been more pleasant or helpful. They suggested some of the better restaurants in the area, and directed us to Sun Divers, an outstanding dive operator in West End. They were also helpful in directing us to some of the don't miss attractions on the island. The roads on Roatan are unmarked and apparently unnamed, but never the less, the directions provided by the manager easily guided us to the management office approximately 25 minutes from the airport. Unlimited supplies of bottled water were provided, as were paper supplies and detergent. A welcome kit (of beverages and snacks) was a nice amenity, as was the fresh cut flower arrangement on the dining table.
A few misc notes - The house has no phone and cell service was very spotty during our visit. The best chance of getting any cell signal on our phones seemed to be outside, on the corner of the pool deck opposite the waterfall. Also, the house next to Casa Cascada has a parrot with an outdoor cage. It can get noisy at times for lengthy periods. The mid-week maid service was an extensive cleaning, not just a touch-up, and was appreciated. A walk to West Bay is up and down a long, steep, fairly narrow road and is not realistic unless one is in good physical condition and OK with a strenuous walk in the heat and humidity. Our preference was just to make the 5 minute drive and park in one of $1 US per hour lots. (BTW, when walking onto the beach, the least crowded and most peaceful areas of the beach are several hundred yards to the left).
In nearly 15 years of traveling to various areas of the Caribbean, this property just might be the best value I've seen.
