“Great place to stay”
Reviewed 6 August 2013

My wife and I take a vacation to somewhere in the Caribbean each year and this year it was my turn to do the planning. I picked Roatan for it's diving and I was not disappointed. The West Bay Lodge was a great place at an incredible rate. The room was the perfect size and had all the amenities we needed. The restaurant was also great and we were always cared for at each meal. The pool was cozy and has shaded areas when we wanted to get out of the sun. There are a number of cats that make the place even more personal, we loved 'mama kitty'. The location was a short walk from the beach and the dive shop. I couldn't have asked for more.

We found West Bay Lodge on Tripadvisor and were drawn to the great reviews. This will be just one more on the list. It took us a little bit to adjust to the pace of life and work in Roatan. West Bay Lodge is very laid back and, at first, it might seem lacking. However, we soon learned that the sign in the attached restaurant – Celeste’s Island Cuisine – is right on target: “Relax – you’re on Roatan time”. The rooms are not huge and the finishings are not perfect or fancy, but the staff more than makes up for it. Oyuki and Melony work in the office and could take care of any requests and always did so with a smile. Nicky and Davinci were our waiters/bartenders so we spent the most time with them during our stay! Davinci did not know the word no and was always willing to help with anything we needed during our stay. The rum punch Nicky makes is a MUST! We tried others at numerous other places and none compared. Breakfast was included with our stay and we paid an extra $20/person/day to get lunch and unlimited rum punch. This turned out to be a good deal for us. The food was spectacular – very fresh, light and flavorful. Breakfasts included pancakes with caramelized bananas, waffles with caramelized pineapple, French toast, eggs with peppers and cheese and tipico (eggs, beans and tortillas). The lunch we usually got was a baleada, a traditional Honduran dish which was like a large soft taco with meat, onions, peppers, tomatoes and crema. The favorite of our group was the shrimp although we tried pulled pork, lobster and chicken. All were good. One BIG plus was when we brought back a yellow fin tuna one of us caught. We asked Darson, one of the chefs, if he would use it to make ceviche and he did a wonderful job. He served it up in martini glasses and fried up some fresh tortilla chips to accompany it. So fresh!!!
We did not spend much time at the pool, but it was nice and had a feeling of seclusion. The staff cleaned the pool and the surrounding area every morning. We did make use of the snorkeling gear for rent at the front office. This is probably the only thing that I would say really needs some updating. The equipment was very used and could benefit from being replaced.
Overall, our stay was great and I would definitely return to and recommend West Bay Lodge!!

We had a great stay in bungalow 4. Staff is awesome. Great location tucked in behind the big resorts...much quieter at WBL. The grilled sea bass is to die for at Celeste's island cuisine at WBL. It was our favorite food on the island. Thank you!

...and now we are also dive addicts!

We just returned from Roatan and our stay at West Bay Lodge was wonderful. We were in a Royal Bungalow #7 and it was nice for my husband, myself, and our teenaged son. Everyone at the lodge was wonderful from our arrival and meeting Oyuki and her tour of the property to the awesomeness that is Davinci and his wonderful sense of humor! It was great to see the same folks throughout the week and that they remembered us. Nicky and Melony who also work at the lodge were also so kind and warm. Celeste and Milos are the owners and they also took great care of us. Our bungalow was cleaned each day and had everything we needed. Loved having the water cooler in our room and we were able to fill up our Nalgene bottles that we brought from home. The breakfasts are great, although I wish more fruit was offered during breakfast. My husband has a wheat allergy and they were able to accommodate his gluten free diet at breakfast each day. We spent most our time at the beach but the pool at the lodge is very nice. I do not have any negatives to report at all about our stay at West Bay Lodge and we would definitely go back!

We just returned from a week stay at WBL and have fallen in love. My husband and I have traveled in the Caribbean at least yearly for the past 10 or more years. I would have to say that West Bay Roatan is one of our top three destinations and WBL is our top resort. With only eight bungalows and owners that live on site, it truly feels like home away from home. I love bungalow 5 which is a Supreme. 5 was the perfect location, far enough from the pool and the office to feel secluded but a short walk to all. The rooms were adequately furnished and the AC worked great, even for my hot natured husband. Anything and everything we requested was delivered to our room and they even pick up and deliver laundry washed and folded if you plan on a 5 day or longer stay. A water cooler, coffee, and coffee maker are in every room. Loved our porch with hammocks, all locataed in tropical setting. The staff makes an effort to met you and know your name immediately. Breakfast is included and we took advantage of the rum punch and daily lunch offer. Amazingly we never had to give our name again, sign a meal slip, or ask for a bill. It was all totaled at the end of our stay. It made our stay carefree and relaxing. And the food was great. It did have limited options but I never grew tired of the food. We even ate the lobster dinner one night and it was not only very good but a great price. Although the location is across the street it was a very short walk to the beach. Just a five minute walk down the beach was the best off shore snorkeling I have experienced. Coral Gardens at Provo is very similar in sealife but this reef was much bigger and extensive. We snorkeled there several times during our stay and found new areas each time. Chairs and umbrellas are available from Bananrama for $10 for the week.

Each afternoon we would stop a moment for a swim and cocktail by the pool. Loved the pool, nice and shady in the afternoon with cool in pool seating. It is surrounded by mango trees and bananas trees. Often one of the parrots were join us and provide entertainment.

With this review, you need to remember that you are on a pretty undeveloped island. We experienced power outages and no Internet. Most cell you carry with you will not get service unless you have an international plan. You need to ustilize the water cooler in each room because of the water quality and the roads are rough and dusty. Don't come to this island if this would ruin your vacation.

Also be aware that the resort is an animal lovers dream but not so much if you aren't. I loved the cats, birds, and Watusi. I have read reviews which complain about these but they personally are one of the reason I love it here. The birds were entertaining and I loved getting them to engage and interact with us. The cats were fine, they would accept pets but leave you alone if you were not interested. The breakfast and lunch selections are limited but the food is fresh and tasty and such a value that don't worry if you want variety, just plan on a breakfast or lunch off the resort.

Celeste and Milos plus the staff work hard to make sure has a great stay. Do your research first but in my opinion, you can't beat it.

Room Tip: Bungalows 1and 2 are by the pool and are queen. Some of our group stayed there and found it hard t...

Good spot in a good location, steps from the beach. Very friendly and helpful staff. Clean and comfy rooms with plenty of amenities: a big bottle of water, a fridge, even a blender for making frozen cocktails, if you feel the need. We stuck with the house special: Celeste's rum punch is a real treat!

We did not actually stay @ the WBL. Milos & Celeste provide management services for the condo we stayed in which was actually across the street & upstairs in the West Bay Mall. I do not know what the room accommodations are like @ the WBL but I can attest to how friendly and warm the service staff made us feel while eating breakfast there daily. The "Birds" in the restaurant are a real hoot (literally) and they seemed to take to us Texans like we were part of the original Hitchcock thriller cast. Malibu would sit on your shoulder and if she felt like it take a small snack off your plate of pancakes. The others would yell out "Ola" repeatedly which again made us feel right at home. Hats off to our condo owner for allowing us to stay at his place and utilize the WBL amenities. Didn't do dinner as planned but I can't imagine the fantastic level of service from the mornings wouldn't remain the same for dinner service. Again, thanks to everyone (including our feathered friends) for making this trip to Roatan very special!
