Really enjoyed our stay here, everything very good
Its and old worldly place built into the rock in a prime location
The staff are very helpful and friendly, rooms cleaned everyday and the food at the restaurant and poolside are of high quality
But what really makes this place special is the view of Etna..we were lucky enough to see her erupt 2 nights running,we sat on the terrace( a safe distance away to enjoy)
Do visit here its well worth the time!!!!! :)

Room Tip: Have a room on the rear of the hotel!!!

My husband and I have just returned from Castelmola and our third stay at the Hotel Villa Sonia where we had a lovely week. This hotel and the town of Castelmola are blessed with the most fantastic views of Mt Etna and the coastline both North up to the Strait of Messina which separates Sicily from the Italian mainline and South to Giardini Naxos and towards Catania. Castelmola is a little town with narrow streets, a couple of piazzas, some interesting bars and restaurants and a local feel. It sits nearly 3000 feet above the coast and about 1500 ft above Taormina. There is easy access to Taormina on the local bus - hourly in each direction during our stay. The hotel also offers regular shuttles down to the town which all makes Taormina very accessible for the hustle and bustle of a large town in a popular tourist spot. The Hotel Villa Sonia is a lovely, quirky, family run hotel furnished and decorated with an eclectic mix of antiques and artefacts. If you only like de minimus boutique style hotels this is probably not for you. We had a superior room which was large with a kingsize bed and a sofa and just about enough storage for our stuff. The bathroom was fine - there was a jacuzzi bath and a shower but the hair dryer was awful! Of course we had the Etna view which was fantastic and a balcony to enjoy it from. The pool area is lovely, a great pool and large deck with ample sunbeds, mattresses and towels (no charge). The umbrellas were a bit flimsy so whenever it got a bit breezy we were asked to put them down which was not satisfactory in such hot sun. There is a shaded dining area and bar at one end of the pool where drinks and lunches were served. We were staying on a half board basis and we found the food in the restaurant very tasty. Not fine dining or 100% perfect all the time but very tasty and plentiful. I could only manage 2 desserts during the week. One day we were allowed to swap dinner for lunch when we planned an evening in Taormina. Breakfasts were very nice, plenty of choice. There was lots of fresh fruit which I liked. I love this hotel and would go back. The staff are lovely some of them have been there a long time which speaks volumes. We love Jay who is a waiter and pool attendant. He always has a gorgeous smile. There is a sense that the recession in Italy may have hit this hotel hard. We didn't think there was as many staff this time. This meant that sometimes you couldn't get service around the pool. Also there was a little evidence that they were a bit behind on some maintenance. We will forgive them these small issues because this is a delightful hotel in a second to none location. We would definitely go back.

What would you say if you walked out onto your hotel balcony looking down 2500 feet or so into the valley towards the town of Giardini Nexos and the sea with Mount Etna dominating the view in front of you? Well, we were lucky enough to have such a room with said balcony and in perfect weather, what a way to wake up with every morning.
The staff at Hotel Villa Sonia, Castelmola, we're more than obliging and very helpful in all aspects of our stay. They are warm and friendly and nothing is too much trouble. Perfectly positioned in relation to the town of Castelmola, a short 5 minute walk up hill brought you to this charming, quintessential Sicilian village full of narrow streets with 'mamas' bellowing their orders out to the rest of the family.
The hotel is spacious with a fabulous terrace out from the restaurant where you can eat and drink at any time. A lovely pool area with loungers and a bar (with grill facilities) again all looks over the Mount Etna view.
Our only comment was that the food would be considered 'decent' but not outstanding compared to the restaurants in the area and Breakfast never changed from one day to the next and we personally found it a little 'samey'.Great coffee however! We stayed on a B&B basis and we decided to have our first evening meal in the hotel. Again, perfectly cooked but nothing that you could not get at home. Castelmola has some fantastic eating places and we would urge you to investigate fully, especially La Traverna dell'Etna & Trattoria Vittorio. At Chicchirichi, which is 5 minutes away, be prepared for several courses, all of which are fantastic (get the hotel to book it for you and they come and pick you up and drop you off after your meal).
So, would we go to Sicily again? Yes. Would we stay in Hotel Villa Sonia again? Definitely. Would we recommend this hotel to you? Absolutely.
Godere e divertirsi

Room Tip: Pay a little extra to overlook Mount Etna - stunning!

It's good value for money first compared to pricey hotels in nearby Taormina, just couple of kilometers up the hill, at the entrance of lovely village of Castelmola there this hotel with breath-taking views on Mt Etna.
The hotel needs clearly upgrade and little modernization, rooms are small, pretty dark, with some authentic (maybe even antique) furniture, religious pictures on the walls, below the standard (but clean) bathrooms. Lift is asking for some upgrade as well......

Service is really polite, helpful and quick, restaurant pretty big, setting also below 4 stars hotel standards, breakfast hardly average.

At the end, cleanness, polite service and view together with fair price is making this hotel really good option.

Room Tip: Definitely you need to have a room with Etna view, otherwise you might be disappointed.

So this is a 4 star hotel with a 5 star view a 3 star room a 1 star bathroom but with a 5 star service. Receptionists and staff at Hotel Villa Sonia are very polite and helpful. Room is on the small side and some of the furniture needs upgrading ( OK it's antique furniture but still doesn't make it acceptable for it to be chipped). The view is amazing, especially on a clear day. I still can't understand why anyone would choose a pink bathroom with a pink shower for a Hotel:).It also had cracked tiles and chipped light fixtures. Breakfast was good. Would stay here again though.

Room Tip: Rooms on level 3 have a big terrace
