This castle, like the one in Taormina is closed to the public. No
reason given!!! We had asked about the castles but were just told
by the tourist information places that they were closed . No ex explanation was given as to why tourists can't go.

While castle signposted it was not open. Beautiful village and great views back towards Taormina and sea as well as Mt Etna. Walk back down to Taormina enjoyable.

These are the magnificent remains of what was once a Norman fortification, nowadays there is very little but powerful wall is clearly visible arriving in town. It can be reached from Taormina in fact it is just a few km away up on the hill.
From up here the most amazing panoramic view, it will leave you speechless.
The best moment to enjoy the view of course is during the daylight otherwise to see the remains of the castle and the beautiful town I suggest to stay until late evening, the narrows streets, historical buildings, the atmosphere is amazing, few tourists, peace, calm and tranquility.

Castelmola is a small town high up inland from Taormina and is worth a short visit. A bus can be boarded in the bus station for the 15 minute journey up to Castelmola along narrow winding roads. The return fare is 2.8 Euros. Reaching the town, one may be able to disembark in the small square which has a tourist office. One may have to disembark further down the road however about 10 minutes walk up to this square. It appears that this latter place is where one has to catch the bus back to Taormina. All the sights in this small town are within a few minutes walk from this square. The castle is currently shut for renovation. Walking around this typical hilltop Sicilian town , one can get the atmosphere of Sicily. Close by is the cathedral facing out on to a small enclosed square. This is worthy of a visit. There are restaurants giving beautiful views over the countryside far below. It takes probably only an hour or two to look around and get the feel of the place and see what is there. It therefore justifies a short visit involving a journey which gives you a view of the local countryside. On the journey back involves an initial walk down the road to the bus stop (not easily seen) but close to Hotel Sonia.
