We dined at Thirty-Eight chairs, four times on a recent visit to Melbourne. We took two different groups of friends and the food and the service was outstanding every time.
Congratulations to Matteo and Gino for assembling such a great team and a wonderful Italian menu. It was hard to pick a standout dish because everything we ate was of such high quality, but the duck ragout parpadella does deserve a special mention. The fettucine with crab was very good as were the seared scallops for entree. Olives, bread and oil are complimentary on arrival. We shared a dessert plate for a friends birthday and everything on it was delicious, but it was upstaged by the delivery and the staff singing happy birthday in their own unique way.
As the name suggests, the place is small and sometimes noisy when busy, but this only adds to the ambiance. You will need to book, especially on a Friday or Saturday night.
All the staff are friendly and helpful and we are always treated like family when we visit here.
This is the first place we visit when in Melbourne and can't wait for our next trip.

Buzzy, busy but great fun. Very generous serves, well plated, delicious ingredients and excellent service by Davide and his offsider (amongst several others).

Don't take any cats to swing but we 3 had enough room at our table.

Nice touch that they provide olives, bread and oil. We probably ordered a bit much as the serves were very generous but we didn't feel too full after nibbles, starters and main.

Pastas were delicious - our table had the duck ragu and the langoustine, crab - both excellent choices. The cotoletta was delicious, the kingfish and tuna carpaccio lovely, and scallops with mortadella was good but might have worked better with prosciutto.

Had a bottle of their valpolicella ripasso which was very tasty, plus there was a good range by glass, carafe or bottle to choose from.

Didn't have room for dessert but coffee was nicely made.

Be warned and book on Saturday nights - we did and there were several people who tried their luck and couldn't get in.

Four of us went here for Dinner. My wife and I had been here once before.

This place serves Italian food. Although the food is very good it could still be better. We rate the food 4 out of 5. Do not get us wrong the food was very good and we were very happy.

This place oozes warmth and atmosphere. The staff are soooo!! Italian and warm and welcoming.

We really loved our night here on both occasions and recommend this place very highly..

If you are considering going here do not hesitate. There is a real good chance you will love it as much as we did.

Thirty-Eight Chairs is actually spelled "38 Chairs" - which is good to know if you track this place down. As the name implies, there are only 38 seats in the place. EVERYTHING was top-notch... food, wines, deserts, you name it.

Per a friend's advice, I just "went with the flow" and had the owners (who were very Italian indeed) bring me whatever they thought was good that day. I made no decisions on anything. It was pretty much all good.

Another component was the fun factor - what a delightful experience all the way around. The employees were very engaging and eager to please. I'll go here every time I come back to Melbourne.
