Booked Number 7 Art Studio for a two week vacation in July attracted by the photos on the web site and general description of a comfortable one-bedroom apartment set among lush Caribbean gardens just a few minutes from the beach. When we arrived we were extremely disappointed to discover the down-at-heel apartment building is crammed in between some very shabby properties. The very small garden was taken over by cheap plastic furniture and did not offer a relaxing or pleasant environment to spend any time. The balcony of the apartment overlooks a scruffy car park, the back of another building and is blighted by road noise. There was a smell of rotten garbage and when we were sitting outside wondering what to do a large rodent ran up the stairs to the apartment. Strolling down to the beach we found it dominated by a JCB digger and not a place where you would want to sit down and relax - in fact there was very little sand. The beach next door at the Sandpiper hotel was taken over by their residents and when we asked if we could rent sun loungers we were told no. By now it was early evening and there was no way we were going to spend one night in this appalling place and so found an hotel for the night. We immediately emailed the owners in the UK that we were not satisfied with the accommodation and that it was not as advertised. For the past two months we have been seeking a refund of the rental we paid upfront but Simon Ellis the owner has point blank refused .My only advice do fellow travelers is do not rent these apartments if you want an enjoyable Caribbean holiday.

Barbados1981, Condominium President at Art Studio Apartments, responded to this reviewResponded 24 September 2013

As President of the condominium I am responding on behalf of the Owners of Art Studios.
First of all I am very disappointed that you did not end up staying at Art Studios for the duration of your stay.
Obviously it would not be fair for me to comment on individual apartments.
Each apartment is the responsibility of each individual owner, and some are in better condition than others, and some are refurbished more often than others.
To respond to each of your comments:
The apartments are not crammed in between other shabby properties - there is an extremely well maintained block to the east of the apartment in which you were staying, and you would have had uninterrupted views of one of the most exclusive hotels on the island to the north - Sandpiper Hotel. To the west is another apartment block which you would have been unable to see, and to the south are trees and foliage.
There is our private car park to the front of the property, which is surrounded by flowering shrubs and trees - as good as it gets for a car park anywhere.
The garden has outside furniture as you would expect to find in any hotel garden - please check out the garden of the Sandpiper. This furniture is relatively new and maintained by the gardener - which includes wiping it down on a daily basis, but you would have been unaware of this as you stayed no longer than a few hours. It is not a very small garden - there is plenty of space to find a quiet corner in the sun or shade, away from other residents if you prefer. The gardens are maintained beautifully by Harry, who you would not have met as he finishes his daily job at 2pm. He has worked there for over 30 years and keeps the garden in beautiful condition.
You are able to hear road noise as indeed you can from all the exclusive hotels on the West coast of the island. If you visit Sandy Lane Hotel, however, you will realise that they had the road re routed some years ago so that their extremely wealthy guests were not bothered by the outside world. At Art Studios we enjoy the atmosphere and appreciate living amongst the local community and do not want to be cut off from the outside world.
The large ‘rodent’ that ran up the stairs would have been a mongoose - a carnivore that eats rodents and insects. They are inquisitive little creatures related to meerkats, weasels, badgers and otters. They were introduced to the West Indies many years ago to destroy the snake and rat population - very successfully too - no snakes in Barbados.
The smell of rotten garbage - unlikely as any garbage is stored well way from the apartments and there were hardly any other guests resident during your stay. The atmosphere in Barbados is very humid during the summer months and it can sometimes smell as though you are in a large glass house.
At present the whole of the west coast is undergoing a major overhaul to help preserve the reefs and the coastline from erosion. This has involved diggers and trucks moving large amounts of rock and sand to create a number of false reefs to protect the island. The work started in May and is scheduled to finish at the end of October. I’m sorry that you were not informed of this by the Owner of the apartment. The work will mean that over the next year or so the coastline will become larger and retain more sand making it more beautiful. The islanders and regular tourists are very excited about this and are looking forward to the end result.
The Sandpiper Hotel were not obligated to rent any sun loungers, and indeed they are for the exclusive use of their guests - it is an extremely expensive establishment. All beaches are public in Barbados and you can sit anywhere you wish, but not on the loungers!
The popularity of Art Studios is demonstrated by the fact that you are unlikely to be able to rent an apartment between November and April as all apartments are already fully booked for 2014. Some apartments are booked for the foreseeable future for these months. Most guests return year after year as they love the staff, apartments and location.
Referring to your score on points such as sleep quality, rooms, cleanliness and service - you experienced none of these so were not in a position to comment favourably or unfavourably.
I do hope you went on to enjoy the rest of your stay in Barbados

We spent 35 marvelous days in Art Studio Apartments #5 in Holetown. It is a very quiet place (at least in low season, we spent 30 days alone in the complex), at a few feet from Discovery Bay a quiet and incredible clear water bay with clean and white sandy beaches. The complex is at around 300 feet from a big and nice supermarket. Bus stop is in the front of the complex and the area is plenty of restaurants.
It is a very recommendable place.
One cons: all the area look very safe but the apartments are on a public access to the beach, so more security would be needed.

Room Tip: Rooms in other apartments (like #16) look fesher and with better views. I do not look at them inside so, I don't know the amenities offered there.

Just returned after 4 weeks holiday. This was our second visit and it was wonderful to meet up with a lot of people, both owners and guests, who we had met there last time. You feel like you are a part of a small community as owners and guests alike are so friendly and it is lovely to all meet up to watch the sunset and chat, whilst enjoying a rum punch. We again stayed in Apartment #7, which is perfect for us as it is on first floor, and in all the time we were there, if we were not eating out, we had all our meals on the balcony (sharing them with the very friendly sparrows who visited us each day). Although the actual apartment is quite basic, it has everything you need and is kept cool by fans. Audrey, the housekeeper has now retired but Meshelle, her replacement, was just as efficient and kept our apartment spotless. Thanks to Harry and Helena too for their hardwork and friendliness.

We were pleased to be here when the cottage on the edge of the sea, which was badly damaged by high seas on our last visit, was demolished. We now had a sea view from our apartment (no doubt something will replace it).

We also found new eating places nearby which were excellent and good value: Sea Cat, Just Grilling, Carizma - Tapas & live music /Tues & Thurs evenings, OPA in Lime Grove and the veg bajan food from Papa Earl (opp side of Rd at entrance to Art Studios 7 days a week from approx 12 till he has sold it all) A takeaway to die for.

Thanks Sarah and Simon. Hope to return again.

Room Tip: All the apartments are excellent. I looked at quite a few when I was there. Some of them have been altered to make the bedroom separate, another ground floor one has had the terrace enclosed and there is one that has two levels - one being a separate bedroom.

My partner and I stayed in the Art Studios for two weeks before Christmas. It is a small group of appartments situated a short walk from the sea through pretty tropical gardens. Each of the appartments is privately owned and the small complex is beautifully looked after by Harry, Audrey and Helena. They have been there years and as well as looking after the appartments they also offer advice to help you get the best out of your stay.

As well as being close to the sea, Holetown itself is only a few metres away with its many restaurants and shops and brilliant transport. There are two sets of buses that run all day and well into the night, the regge buses which are yellow and the blue government run buses. The regge buses are fun and not to be missed - slightly heart stopping on a first journey but one soons gets used to it!

We really enjoyed Holetown as a good base for travelling round the island, which we did. We felt quite safe both during the day and evening. Self catering is easy too as there are a couple of good supermarkets close by and a fish market only a short bus ride away.

The weather is wonderful, not too hot during the day and the evenings only a few degress cooler. Very few clothes needed!! The only thing I would say is that the beach close to the Art Studios is being worn away at quite a pace and to get to the beach one does have to do a slight negotiation over rocks - the Caribbean can be quite lively at times too so this is slightly tricky. The beach is still lovely but don't expect endless miles of white sand.

We loved Barbados and will be going back next year - a wonderful place to go to avoid pre Christmas madness!

Room Tip: All appartments are good.
