“The best camping on the Romanian Seaside!”
Review of 2 Mai

2 Mai
Reviewed 1 August 2014

2 Mai is the best choise for those who like camping directly on the beach, enjoying the best sunrises and the quiet beaches. If you are lookig for luxury accomodations and select restaurants, this is not the place for you! The camping is very well maintained, the toilets and the showers are in good condition, clean. The beach is nice, the entrance in the water is safe, it' a good option for family with kids, except the food. I think that for those with toddlers this candbe a problem, because there are not so many good restaurants and you must be a bit more careful. For adults, I don't think it's a problem. The village doesn't have to much to offer and yes, with a low budget you will survive here. But there are, also, a lot of people that could afford to pay more for their vacation, but they choose the tent instead of a cosy bed, the wave's sound instead of the noisy music club and the simple, modest romanian "cherhana" rather than a fine cuisine. It's all about preferences!

We return year after year in 2 Mai to spend our vacation since our kids were very small. This small village has a lot to offer to those looking for a quiet and peaceful vacation, in a safe and healthy environment, away from the urban noise of a large city. What I enjoy most: the beach and entrance in the sea are safe for children, you can leave them unattended, safeguard available in high season, rustic environment very quiet giving the opportunity of enjoying the sounds, views and scents of the sea all day and night long, organic food from local markets, including catch of the day restaurants.
Children are safe everywhere actually, not much traffic except the main road witch takes you directly to the Bulgarian border, through Vama Veche.
Any type of accommodation is available for all budgets, starting with camping directly on the beach, staying with the locals, many villas and pensions and for the more demanding, the stylish villas on the beachfront, that offer great amenities and fabulous sea-views directly from your bedroom.
For those who enjoy nudism, there is also a small clothing-optional beach nearby :)
In July and August it can get very hot and busy, so I advise going there in May-June or September.

This was the 8th summer in a row that we've been to 2 Mai. My kids are older now 16, 14 and 8 but they don't want to go anywhere else for the summer. One can go very low budget and rent a room in a private house - you can find a clean family that might also cook for you a 2 or 3 course meal at an affordable price - the advantage is that the food is on the table at the time you want and you do not have to wait for it as you wait at a restaurant.
Or, if you really want to experience something special, rent rooms or a house that is waterfront - of course the price is different but is well worth it, you will return so relaxed from the holiday!
We have always rented a house that has a privileged location being waterfront on the high cliff: we wake up watching the sunrise from our beds, we go to bed rocked by the sound of the waves! The advantage is that is also 2 minutes walking to the beach, which is safe and rather clean compared with Vama Veche. Also compared with other beaches like Neptun, Saturn or Mamaia, is less crowded and less commercial. One can actually be on the beach and hear the music of the waves, not the mix of music from the food vendors. If you do not have a car, better is to rent one, but even if you don't you can access 2 Mai through the bus from Bucharest to Mangalia, then you take another bus 4 km south or just a taxi. There are a variety of restaurants: from the one serving fresh local caught fish on the beach at the south point of 2 Mai, throughout all 2 Mai: on the main street or inside the village.
If you want to visit historic sites, Mangalia is 4 km away and a bus comes every 10 minutes. You will find a small but amazing history museum that stays open until 8 pm, a free to visit archeological site that is under the President hotel - which astounded me, more restaurants. Pizza and shawarma were very good. At evening we were again on the beach, playing ball games, or even bathing. The water is very warm! If you visit in September or May, you can still bath in the Black Sea using a wet suit. In Mangalia there are also 2 spas: Sanatoril Balnear Mangalia, were one can get mud therapies for the penny to the dollar compared to how much we pay in the west! Very good services, too.I felt rejuvanated after a 2 week treatment.

We really enjoyed our holiday and plan another one for next year.

Actually 2 Mai is a village where everyone is struggle making a living on renting rooms to the tourists. Improvisations are widespread.

Everything, including the beach, is dirty and populated by tourists and locals with bad habits - throwing garbage everywhere...

2 Mai, an old fishers village, situated on the southern border of Romania. This village is a charming place for nonconformist families who prefer to spend the vacation in a rural place, without luxury restaurants or hotels.

There are few lodges but preferable is to stay to the privates.
Don't expect for good food even many people consider the four or five restaurants offer "the best". In the last years, many of them discovered the Bulgarian restaurants...

The beach is sure for children and you can let them unattended.

2 Mai has also one of the nice camping from Romania, located right on the beach.
