Owner description: Discover Blair Castle and go on a journey into the fascinating past of the Dukes and Earls of Atholl. Unique amongst Scottish castles, the story here leads you from Mary Queen of Scot's visit to the Civil War, and from the Jacobite cause to Queen Victoria's famous stay which led to the creation of Europe's only surviving private army, the Atholl Highlanders. Over 700 years of Scottish history are on display across 30 rooms. Highlights of the castle tour include the Baronial Entrance Hall, featuring weapons used at the Battle of Culloden; the classic Georgian styling of the Picture Staircase; the grandeur of the State Dining Room and Drawing Room; and the magnificent Ballroom, bedecked in hundreds of antlers. The Castle sits at the hub of a breathtaking historic landscape and the gardens and grounds feature a 9 acre walled garden, a peaceful wooded grove, a ruined kirk, a red deer park and a whimsical Gothic folly.

“Lovely building”

This is a lovely day out and a wander around, the house is especially nice on a wet day. Although we didnt get a chance to see the Gardens due to the heavy rain.

Stunning building, lots of interesting things to see. Bagpipes were playing when we arrived and the staff were very friendly.

“Full day to explore”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 August 2014

We spent a full day here and tented overnight in the caravan park as well. The castle itself is really interesting and the vast majority of the rooms are open and furnished with the most amazing family antiques. It is self-guided, but there are very informative guides stationed in different areas if you have questions about the house or the generations of the family who lived there. The information about each room/section was organized into categories--i.e. when the room was added to the castle, what was going on in the family at that time, and how it connected to the wider political history of Scotland in that era. We found that to be a genius way to organize a very complex history of architecture, family and country (most "big house" tours leave you a bit confused with the generations of history in my opinion). The grounds are impressive, the walled garden having been restored beautifully and faithfully over the last 25 years or so. The plants used are authentic to those available at the time the garden was designed. You can also walk around a huge grove of old trees, both native and imports, that hold the titles of some of the tallest in Britain. And the ruined church and former town of Old Atholl, as well as riverside walks nearby (accessed via the caravan park area), kept us occupied for the rest of the day. Only thing that might be worth improving is the cafe, which I found to have very little for vegetarians (mostly sandwiches although there were some hot plates, all of which included meat that day).

“Great Day Out”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 August 2014

The castle and gardens are well worth a visit and will reward you with a great day out. Steeped in history with thousands of interesting artefacts and probably just the right length of tour to keep your interest at a peak, then a spot of relaxation in the gardens and grounds. Thought it was good value for money

“More than worth the trip”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 August 2014

We visited Blair Castle on a wet day, which thankfully turned sunny while we were there. Externally it is a beautiful castle/stately home - it has changed a lot over the centuries - set in picture-perfect countryside. Inside it is less impressive, but still interesting, especially with the family history over many years, and the various artefacts (the China Room has some exquisite lace under cloth covers, which would be easy to miss - don't). Whatever you do, do not miss the Hercules Garden - it is quite unlike other gardens, very large and rather original. There is a restaurant; we only had tea but the food looked and smelled good! The staff are very welcoming and helpful. Well worth a visit, even if you have to make an effort to get there.
