“Perfect stay”
Reviewed 17 March 2014

Hi,
we spent there 5 days (4 nights) and it was probably one of my favourite stays. The staff was excellent, the Food was really good. Our room was perfect and every Dollar was worth it. The beach is ok, you can swim there but there are better places. But the biggest Point is the quietness. You can totally relax and calm down. We will come back.

We visited Amaloh on our travels around the south coast...we had heard a new hotel had opened. The manager happily showed us around the hotel. The reception area had beautiful mosaic flooring and teak colonial furniture ,creating a wonderful feel. The bedrooms are roomy with modern furnishings & ocean views. The pool is located centrally in the gardens with the ocean a few steps away. Our party of 7 was offered yummy passion fruit juice whilst touring the rooms. On reading the visitors book we were so impressed by the comments regarding the amazing food & fantastic service,we will certainly plan to stay here on our next trip to SL.

We booked this hotel by booking.com and didn't know what to expect.
First impression was really good, it is not a mega structure but a charming litlle bed and breakfast style hotel. The rooms on the other hand are gigantic, very charming decoration, balcony with ocean view, stone tub, again with ocean view and a stylish big bathroom. Only negative thing here was the leaking toilet that spreads a unpleasant smell while taking a shower.
About the food: fantastic! The chef gives the opportunity to discuss and 'customize' the menu adapted to the needs of the customer. Really fresh fish and a spread of italian styled food. The chef lived for 14 years in Italy and he uses all his experience in his way of cooking! Chef: sei un buon cuoco, abiamo mangiato molto bene qua!
Staff is very friendly and helpfull, Sanath, Suranga and last but not least: Dulaj!!
We had a very nice stay in Amaloh and if we visit the region in the following years, we would defenitly come to this hotel again!

I'll admit up front that we made a stupid mistake on the price after booking on booking.com i.e. assuming the price was half of what it actually was.
In summary. This is a new hotel with it's own seafront (about 5 months
old). It had no beach but some nice sitting areas near the sea front.
There are only 7 rooms which have nice large beds and lovely showers. One of the rooms had an excellent outside shower. Rooms are very well done and qere clean.
Pool was superb and with only a few guests meant the kids had it to themselves.
One drawback was there was a bit of noise from the building of the new rooms to the side of the main hotel. This will another 20 rooms.
There are no options to eat nearby. So you have to eat at the hotel.we had club sandwiches for lunch which were ok. For the price you paid these were a bit ropey. No frills simply a sandwhich, which was a bit soggy. My wife had pasta which was nice.
For dinner the food is all fresh and I had large jumbo prawns and snapper one night. My wife had dishes of vegetable curry which was excellent.
Here comes the sting. All in for two rooms (we have 3 children 6,10,11) with the food, it cost 1,000euros for 2 nights. Now I stay in abu dhabi hotels that are cheaper than that this but 5 star. This hotel was nice but didnt compare to that I have paid in abu dhabi where you have all the trimmings if 5 star hotels and phenomenal all you can eat buffets ( check out Qasr al Sarab which is a similar price).
What I am trying to say is they charge 5 star hotel prices, dont have the little touches that make these different and are in a country where prices are substantiallly less than any western or dubai / abu dhabi country. Service was good but not phenomenal so all in, nice stay but left with a sour taste in our mouths. Ok be it us mistaking the price which is our stupidity, but there are other hotels in sri lanka way more value for money (although I note still many other hotels that are overpriced compared to other similair asian countries like amaloh. Perhaps that's sri lanka!) so I suggest you search these out. Not worth the premium.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your comment which enables us to improve the standard of our service to future guests.

It is a pleasure to understand that you liked the property and the surroundings and rooms and amenities were up to your standard.

It is indeed sad that you overlooked the cost of your second room in your booking.com voucher and only realised that during checkout. This surely must have left a sour taste at the end of your nice stay. We also agree on the price front that we are not a budget hotel and indeed priced higher than most of the hotels in the area to reflect the standard of our property and the service we render to all out guests.

Thank you again for your valuable input

Best regards

Brand spanking new hotel, with lovely large rooms and bathrooms. Very comfortable, fairly stylish (though not up to KK/Villa Paradise Road standards).

We had one of the Ocean rooms, on the first floor, with lovely large windows and a balcony. There are only two of these, and I reckon they are prob the best. We were originally going to have a Garden room, and I am glad we did not as they don't have a view apart from onto a barren car park.

The photo gallery is fairly sparse for a reason... The hotel is very new, so the garden is pretty bare, and there is a large new hotel under construction right next door which you don't see from the photos. And the beach is non-existent, with the sunbathing area not very picturesque at all - some concrete slabs built on the sea wall. When we arrived, there was brown scum/foam on the water which the hotel manager assured us was safe (?) and there was no point in using the complimentary snorkelling equipment as you could not see your hand in front of your face. There is large river inlet only 50m from the hotel, which I guess can discharge muddy water (and whatever else) and the main river mouth at Matara is only a few hundred metres up the coast. Maybe we were unlucky, but swimming was certainly not appealing!

The biggest issue with this hotel is the location. In a country blessed with miles of some of the most amazing beaches in the world, to build this super hotel in the suburbs of Matara, without a beach seem like a mistake. The Polhena beach is not that far away, but not a '2 min walk'. You can get there by 15 mins in a kayak, which is fun once, but not every day / twice a day!! Whilst nice, Polhena is not that great a beach compared to the many others along the coast.

The staff were lovely and nothing was too much trouble. The chef in particular was charming and clearly very accomplished, producing some first class food. Not convinced by the 'no menu' way of operating. By all means offer some degree of personalisation. Call me traditional, but I would rather have a small menu that means I don't have to think what I want to eat every day... But the chef means well and is utterly passionate, and very talented. The wine is expensive compared to other hotels.

I hate to do this hotel down as it is new and trying hard, the rooms are lovely and the staff really care, but the whole point about feedback is to be honest. The overall package just doesn't compete with the best hotels in Sri Lanka, whilst the prices charged mean it should.

Room Tip: Chose one of the two first floor Ocean rooms - have huge bathrooms - left or right both have balconi...

Amaloh Boutique has the potential to be a wonderful place to stay. It has beautiful rooms and delicious food and of course the wonderful Sri Lankan climate.
As it is new the landscaping is definitely immature so the garden feels a bit sparse and exposed, more natural shade would be more inviting - plus the LED lights up the palm trees weren't very classy!
In the photos on the website the beach just at the end of the garden looks wonderful and the sea looks really clear, however when we were there the water was so high there was no beach... you walked down the steps and could swim straight from the steps but it just wasn't the same, maybe we were just unlucky with the high water.
The service was sometimes not quite what we had come to expect from that sort of price tag - the first night we had big bath towels but no bath mat or hand towels, the 2nd night just 2 hand towels then the 3rd night all 3?
The chef is clearly very talented and the food was delicious, however there aren't menus to choose from, the chef talks to you every day about what food you like and what you would like for dinner - while this sounds great, actually I don't really want to have to decide, I have to think up whats for supper every other day of the year, and if you've been out all day, you just get back to your room to relax then you get a phone call asking you to come down and discuss dinner - quite irratating.
Even though most of those problems can be fixed the fact that it's a beach hotel with no beach is a problem.
One plus side - as it was all new the air conditioning units were also new so pretty quiet!

Dear Guest,

Thank you for posting a constructive feedback on Tripadvisor which give us an opportunity to correct ourselves in order to serve our future guests even better.

We agree with your comment on the Garden and the new trees we have planted might take some time to give shade and we have kept the openness of the garden on purpose and your personal opinion is understood and well received.

The sea can be rough on some days and it is not the case in most of the times and we advise our guests to use the Polhena white beach which is mere 150 m from us on rough days.

Housekeeping department has been alerted and clearly there must have been a mistake by them to not to make available all three types of towels in your room and the bath mat on all three days.

Our service has been designed to cater to Guests individual preference and we apologise if this was not to your liking. This allows us to provide our guests with the meals cooked using the freshest ingredients bought on the same day and NOT to serve the precooked dishes. However I will address the issue of calling your room to come down to discuss the Dinner as this is not our standard practice.

We hope that you will visit us again in the future and allow us to serve you better.

Thank you again for your constructive feedback
