My small family and I had a wonderful three months based here with Sumedha and Kumari from February this year. We used the apartment as our root from which we explored Sri Lanka.
The apartment is set back from the coast on Browns Hill, within Matara city limits. Matara beach is a five minute walk, as is Medawatta - which is uncrowded and great for surfing. The astonishing Matara food market is a twenty minute walk, so too is the bus stand.
The apartment itself is functional and comfortable. It is set amongst coconut and other fruit trees which put food on the table and attract all sorts of wildlife including daily visits from peacocks and monkeys.
Sumedha and kumari live next door and could not be more accommodating. We spent much of our time with the two of them and their extended families, and I believe we experienced much of Sri Lanka at its core as a result.
They also have Eagles Crest bungalow in Knuckles Mountain Range and the eco-lodge on Morawaka tea estate - both of which are far from the beaten track and became two of our favourite places on the island.
Matara is not your typical Sri Lankan holiday destination, and nor is time with Sumedha and Kumari. If you are looking to party and relax by the pool then this is probably not the place for you. On the other hand if you want to experience natural Sri Lanka then I couldn't recommend it more strongly. I have included an image of the view from the bungalow in Knuckles and the lodge in Morawaka.
